  • JRMD, it never fails to amaze me that people who will argue with the drugstore clerk for 20 minutes over a 50-cent coupon will stay completely silent about issues affecting where they live, to the point where they won't call 911, won't text, nothing. When it comes to calling 911 and contacting aldermen and park superintendents, it's almost always one or two people on a block who do all the heavy lifting. Everyone else? As the Little Richard song says, "All their lips were tight".

After 9 years in South Shore I get it. All of it. To those of you leaving, I am sorry to see you go. To those of us staying, let's do what we can. I call 911 every single time there is an incident. I am now attending block clubs and CAPS meetings. Get to know your neighbors and get a phone tree going. I would also recommend letting CAPS know about problem buildings where criminals stay. Then, let's actually elect Aldermen who care about the community. It is true that Sandi Jackson was frequently in DC when she was supposed to be working for us. However, after a recent spike in crime @ 79th and South Shore, Rahm- appointee Natasha Holmes declined to get involved and called it a "police matter." Are you joking, Alderman?

Let the Gangs win

I think this is a message worth noting. This past weekend, our 14th Annual Block Party was abruptly cancelled due to a shooting that occurred the previous night. The incident involved three "reputable" gang members; in other words, they were the intended targets. The fact that these gang members are proud to make that admission is enough to prosecute them for organized crime and terrorism. I have lived in this neighborhood for over 25 years and have never seen a block party cancelled over similar incidents. There are shootings across the city every night. However, my issue is the mentality of our police who ask the peace makers to hide inside because they will arrive after a crime is committed. As far as I can see, the police are enabling the gang activity by allowing them to intimidate us and disregard our right to peace. Has anyone else experienced a similar occurrence?

I live just on the other end of the block from you, Neighborino23. (In fact, I live in the same building where the gangbanger funeral/wake was held last Thursday).

I'm new to the neighborhood and to Chicago in general. I'm working on getting my landlord to understand what a problem the residents in 2700 are, and hopefully he will not renew their lease when it expires. Any details you can provide would be helpful. Thanks!

I can tell you that these individuals openly sell drugs and use minors to prevent long prison sentences. Just last week, I was walking back from Walmart with my kids and saw the same group relaxing on their stoop opening smoking weed at 6 pm. We are always hearing them yelling gang slurs at cars passing. There are several children under the age of ten that they expose to this type of behavior which in my opinion is child neglect/abuse.

If your landlord is unaware that criminal activity is taking place in his building, he should know that the cops are there almost daily now. His tenants are causing his property value to decrease regardless of how much he has to pay the city in taxes. The building was spray painted along the side by his own tenants showing their "territory" which initiated the violence that occurred that weekend the 16 year old was killed. That 16 year old was known by the police to be a proud gang member living in his building.
