Points well-taken, Mrs.CHM. I think this information is instructive, regardless of your candidate, or what you feel about the results. Only one poll counts and that's the one on April 7.

I don't see where posting this poll is irresponsible. If nothing else, it spurs conversation. If I hadn't posted it, I would not have gotten the opportunity to hear your insights about the poll and some of the machinations behind it. Heretofore, I only had the information that the pollsters provided. It's better to hear another side than to let the reported methodology stand unchallenged.

I think it's fair game to share the video and announce the fact that there is a candidates forum. Both candidates are doing the same. There's no reason that engaged citizens can't do it.

I didn't share in this post who I am supporting. Even if I did indicate who I was voting for that's fair game, in as much as we live in a democracy.

We run a very fine line between censorship, partisanship and informing. I think it's better to post information and let people formulate their own opinions rather than not posting information with which I don't agree. I also think we should feel free to respectfully share our own opinions about political issues and have an enlightened discourse. Voters are smart enough to weigh facts for themselves.

Vacant Schools Still Waiting for a Second Life

The building that used to be Bontemps Elementary School is now a crumbling ruin-- granite walls chipped away, interior stripped of pipes and wiring, dusty plywood sheets bolted over most of the windows.

And when Asiaha Butler looks at it, she couldn’t be more excited.

“I’m thinking this back part could be like a little rest stop area, where people riding their bikes up on the trail can come down and learn about the community,” Butler says, describing a dream as she sweeps her hand toward a thicket of woods growing over the property boundary. “We also see a lot of opportunity for this to be a kind of urban agriculture education center, for farmers or for tourists—if you want to start an urban farm, you can come here and learn the basics.”

As president of the Residents Association of Greater Englewood (RAGE), Butler has spent almost two years leading conversations to get somebody—anybody—to set up shop in this building. Bontemps is one of six shuttered elementary schools in Englewood that are still empty since the district closed a total of 49 schools across the city. Englewood was hardest hit.

Old photos wanted

My mom, along with her brothers and sisters, was born at 2050 W. Roosevelt
in the early 1920's. They were baptized at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church
which was located at 12th & Cypress St. (now Roosevelt Rd. and Hoyne Ave.)
Does anyone have photos of this section of Roosevelt Rd. showing
the church and surrounding neighborhood. Would be great to have a photo
of the building where she and her siblings were born. Many Thanks in advance!

check with the Chicago History Museum. I found several pix of my ancestors there.

Elliott Associates Marketing properties in USA Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong: They Market like They Own

Elliott Associates has this unique company motto that inspires its clients' complete trust: Marketing a property like they own it. Now, that is one real estate marketing strategy you do not hear every day. And if you do, you do not see it done every day as well. So, what does this mean in real business terms?

First of all, it is obvious that this will not be possible to do for any company that has not been actively involved in the real estate business itself. You cannot manage something for someone else unless you have done it yourself for your own property.

Thanks for responding, Sir Sel. I definitely believe that sanitation should be a priority, but I don't think that's all a candidate should be selling. I'd rather see what his/her plan is for moving the community forward, with business, infrastructure and amenities for its residents, and as for that particular candidate, I haven't seen it yet, and I would urge you to look deeper as well.

I've seen the turnaround of many areas: West Loop, South Loop, the convention center, and I can't recall that the charge was led by a massive cleanup, rather a comprehensive plan for the area to bring development in which beautification was included.

Mr. Scott, Jr has been with the Chicago Park District for many years, and those parks (specifically the smaller ones in the ward) are a real mess, and based on that record his promises to clean the ward can't really be trusted. Parks are the cornerstone of communities, as well as its schools--many of which are attached to parks and controlled by the district.

I agree with you on one thing though- if WE (the residents) can't do anything else WE should be cleaning up our community. It's refreshing to see community programs that are geared towards this cause and I hope to see many of our neighbors get involved. That work starts with them, but I'd like to see the ward leadership tackle the bigger issues.

Keep representing your point of view, although I don't share your understanding of how to get started with economic development.
The areas immediately connected to the influence of the loop didn't have to contend with the degrading, demeaning damage of trash and debris as in our communities.
Those areas offered more of an investment worthy appearance, which I feel is hampering our ability to attract businesses and employment opportunities. There is power and stability in a clean, healthy environment.
Please understand that position is not limited to the physical appearance. That's why I constantly stress the cleaning process starts from the inside...............OUT.
Some of the people, who are calling the shots, regarding the trash in our community, live in some of the more pristine areas of Chicago and represent some of best dressed elected officials at city hall. Look at Ed Burke, the filthiest demon inspired creature in local government.
    Keep writing.

March 21 (2-4:00) You are invited to gather and dream a vision for the future of North Lawndale at Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center, 1957 S. Spaulding Ave. at 21st.
We need you!
First, there will be an update on projects CUARC is involved in that are about improving the community. This will be followed by a facilitated creative experience expressing our vision and dreams for the future of the neighborhood. Picking up where we left off last month, we will take notes and document our efforts, and keep track off our vision. No need to have attended last month. We will be doing more new, easy, fun exercises. There will be one more small meeting next month, and then we will meet at a large location & accommodate a much larger number of people to accomplish a larger experience to dream for North Lawndale.
We hope to develop a plan for the future of North Lawndale much like other neighborhoods have who have successfully moved their neighborhoods forward. We will be including neighborhood organizations, chamber of commerce, elected officials, and businesses. Please consider attending our DREAM of the future of North Lawndale creative experience! Please RSVP at contact@urbanartretreat.com

Youth Violence/Adult Responses

I believe it is wrong to condone our youth being violent and not choosing other ways to respond to violence when they are confronted with it. I am disappointed that any adult would condone the violent behavior at recent ball game of North Lawndale team. I really do not care who started it- it is wrong to be fighting, hitting other people. This is called violence. I saw on the television news report, a grown man made a statement that...

I saw on the television news report, a grown man made a statement that the Lawndale youth were only responding to the other team's violence by being violent. This is the wrong example to set for your youth! No wonder youth are out of control with adults in our community being on the wrong side of the violence in our community issue.
I often lead workshops and classes in our schools and at area organizations. It is hard to see the amount of violent talk and actions the children present. When I meet parents, I quickly learn where they get it from. When I see movies, videos, online images, video games, publicity ads, etc. I learn where they get it from, and how it is re-enforced.
We must let children know that there are consequences for their actions. If they break rules, they will need to face the music. We must be consistent. They must know what to expect and be prepared to pay for their mistakes now, before they make mistakes they must pay dearly for.

Hammond Elementary

Why have so many teachers left Hammond Elementary since the retirement of Mrs. Salinas? There has been a mass exodus of teachers, teachers aids and other staff since Mrs. Lugo took over. Some estimates place the turnover rate at 65%. Is this normal for a elementary school in Chicago? Is this school supposed to "Fail" so it can become a charter?
