24th Ward Aldermanic Campaign

I'm reposting from 2011 campaign. I hope it still holds true.

In the last presidential campaign, we saw personal attacks thrown around that had nothing to do with the issues that threatened our country. In the last presidential campaign, we saw personal attacks thrown around that had nothing to do with the issues that threatened our country. In this mayoral race, we have seen ugly examples of incivility played out on national TV. Our 24th Ward Aldermanic campaign has received ridicule because of the number of candidates that we have.
But, I would like to thank and commend our 24th Ward candidates for the respect that they have shown both to the voters and each other. This respect can be seen by driving through the ward and seeing campaign posters, side by side. It can also be seen in the Candidates’ Forums, including the forum sponsored by the K-Town Historic District Association (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J2zeNgyyZw). Despite the lack of respect and/or attention that has been paid to our ward, our candidates have conducted themselves in a manner which can serve as an example to the city and the nation on how political candidates should conduct themselves.

North Lawndale in the News

This is what the Library can do! Because of our efforts, as a community, North Lawndale has gained positive, front page media coverage. How are you going to use this fresh interest in us?
The Library is not a gift. When we get it, it'll be because we earned it.
What is a gift, is this unprecedented opportunity to change our community.
Go on. It's yours. Use it.

I would have to call today’s townhall a success. But it is just the first step in a long and difficult journey that you are being challenged to take. This is a journey that can lead to a cleaner, safer and more prosperous community.
Our Library bid opens doors to opportunities that were unthinkable before. And those doors have to be identified and opened by you. There’s nothing free here. Everything we’ve gotten to this point in the process has been earned with hard work. That won’t change going forward.
What about jobs? Another question is, “what jobs are we preparing ourselves for?” One group is starting a student enrollment drive for technical training so that our youth will have the skills for the coming economic boom. Even if we don’t get the Library (we will), won’t our community be better off with a skilled work force?
With the increased attention on us because of this national story, what opportunities do you see? How do we use that opportunity?

What is it that you love about it, dear sister. Is it the best thing since hot, buttered corn bread. Expand on "I love it." That could mean anything. Do you believe in it? Would you promote it, buy it, give it to others, force feed it to others? Do you like the color of it. Does the Ebony hue go with the hue inside of you?

  • Sir Sel,
Appreciate what you do have and build on that, even if you start with nothing. The result of that noble effort can be, "my cup runneth over."
    That's what I get

Who is Rahm E'S Daddy?

Did you see Rahm's arm cross around his belly, finger over lip, whispering in the House Speaker's ear while in Washington?

Did you look at his eyes as he was in action? Did he appear to be sneaky to you? \

He has eyes of a warrior; perhaps he need to prove something to Daddy, General of Israeli Amy???

Could it be An All Out War on The People of Chicago because he was asked to leave Washington?

Dearest Lawndale Community:

Please except my most humble apology for lashing out on great men and who have serve our country and community for many years.

I thank God for freedom of speech; I am truly grateful, I can relent my emotional outburst in regards to my failure of submitting my petitions for aldermanic position for the 24th Ward Candidacy.

It is obvious to me that I need more training for the game of politics' for Lawndale. I love living in Lawndale and the people who live here. Lawndale is one of the most beautiful community I've lived in throughout my years of living in Chicago. I have not seen as many black seniors or black men in one concentrated area of Chicago ever.

Yes, there are a lots of ills in Lawndale, such as: drugs and alcohol abuse, lack of education, homelessness; families, individual and veterans with PTSD, young and old with bad manners and behavior disorders, transitions from prisons and more; to many churches and community organizations not addressing the community needs.

Lawndale is a melting pot, no matter the situation, we can live together. The goal should be to live in peace, cleanliness, prosperous and healthy as any other community.

Most of all, we all have the right to be informed to the political agendas of our elected officials whom we voted in office to represent the community not their own self interest, disregarding the community at large.

Once again, please except my humble apology for showing a lack of respect for Danny K. Davis, Richard Barnett and Michael D. Chandler.

Sincerely,

Proverty is no option or excurse

My Dearest Community,

Please don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with having more money as the 5%.

We are all suppose to have what we need. Some learned how to line up with ____, and some of us are still trying and, some of us will never get there.

Maybe, this is why poor people are made to pay for being poor. Higher taxes, speed 30 miles tickets, close our schools, just for being a male; black on top of it, play in public park; you will pay, etc.

The Devil is crafty, it may look like he won this round. All I wanted to do as a mother, grandmother, great grandmother and concern community members is to help my community; the people who live in it. It doesn't always need to be about the "Benjamin's". Its enough for everybody!!

Its only that the 5% want to be one to say I got mind, you get yours! When we all could be happy if one just extend a little help to the other. 'Remember the Pharisees'

A Poem For The Losers

Immedeately following the last election, I wrote a poem for the candidates who were not successful in their bid for the Aldermanic post. It was basically encouraging them to stay involve with their expressed energy and concern for the quality of life in North Lawndale. I'll post it shortly. I liked it; maybe it will represent your feelings about activism also.

North Lawndale has made it into the Library finals. Unfortunately, we are up against some pretty stiff competition, including Mayor Emanuel, who appears to want it on the Southside. Fortunately, this crossroads in our community is happening right in the middle of an aldermanic campaign. And we have 14 candidates, all with armies of volunteers.
The Library is not a political issue. It’s an issue that affects the very nature of our community. In the last campaign, crazy things were said and done in political races all over the country; but not in the 24th Ward. I wrote a letter to the editor of the Sun Times, commending the mutual respect that our candidates showed each other and the voters. That small letter was printed. Imagine the press North Lawndale could get if all of our candidates publicly declared their unified support for our Library bid.
If not unified, then individual public declarations of support will do.
North Lawndale is not afraid to stand up against the Mayor's wishes. I'm sure our candidates aren't either.
Here is the list of the current candidates for Alderman, as listed by the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners:
24th Ward Candidates 2015
MICHAEL D. CHANDLER
FRANK M. BASS
REGINA D. LEWIS
WALLACE E. "MICKEY" JOHNSON
SHERITA ANN HARRIS
ROGER L. WASHINGTON
VERNELL L. HOLLIS-SWANIGAN
VETRESS BOYCE
DENARVIS MENDENHALL
LADARIUS R. CURTIS
MARCUS D. THORNE
MICHAEL SCOTT, JR.
LARRY G. NELSON

Westside Presidential Library

Is North Lawndale less worthy than Bronzeville, Pullman, Chicago State, University of Illinois or University of Chicago? If so, how? Dr. King didn't think so when he chose where to bring the might of the Civil Rights Movement to Chicago.
Join Cook County Board Past-President Bobbie Steele, Stone Tempe Missionary Baptist Church, Lawndale Christian Development Corporation (LCDC) and the K-Town Historic District Association as we push to bring this community builder to our neighborhood.

I believe we have an earlier post on EB for this campaign. I would like to be part of a campaign to have the children of the area write letters to the president and the committee governing this decision. I think we can even take on the project to tutor writing skills by placing it in a real context and initative that can have an affect on their community.

  • I don't know how I missed this posting Daniel. I hope your enthusiasm has grown, or at least is still there. A children's letter writing or art project is still a great idea. Their community has accomplished a great thing that they should be proud of. Imagine, a whole generation of North Lawndale children growing up with a healthy pride in their community.

So many times in our past, it seems that changes are made to our neighborhood, without a chance for community input. This is our chance to help make decisions about the impact of possibly the most significant, single change to North Lawndale since its beginning in 1869.

How can this effect unemployment, education and crime? What about property values and land use? How will this affect you?

The correct address is 1616 S. Avers Ave, Chicago 60623. Tomorrow! Saturday! November 22nd. 12 noon

Think Big! Get involved.

  • SIR SEL OF NORTH LAWNDALE AND BEYOND I'm a community filth and fear fighter

I'm not a legal resident of Lawndale, but my spirit and concern and efforts for the over-due attention due North Lawndale is second to non. I respect and support us where ever we are showing respect for us and trying to represent us. I am so much a proponent of positive causes in our community that I'm willing to get the Sel out of the way, if that will encourage constructive and culturally specific development.

  • Sir Sel, don’t get out of the way. You are exactly who this bid was designed to help. I’ve used you and your cause so many times as an example of the type of community efforts that can be enhanced by the Library push.
No Sir Sel, the Library needs you.

As we go forward with our campaign, it’s important to remember this: the Library is Barack and Michelle’s legacy. It’s something that they’ve earned. The First Family is held in the highest respect by this page. And, we will respect whatever their final decision is about the location of their Library.

I understand your suspicion. Communities like ours have always been victimized by slick talkers.
I have no way of convincing you that this is not another trick. I was born at 13th and Homan Ave in 1952. I went to Mason, Corkery and Farragut. My home has been in our family since 1959.
I am retired and have absolutely no political or business interest in the Library. I am not owned by anyone.
I am doing everything I can to bring the Library to the Westside because it’s my home. I want a safe, prosperous and clean home.
I don’t want to be priced out of that home. What about some kind of real estate tax and rent freeze? But I also know that children who are born today and raised with an education priority will go off to college one day. When they finish, where will they want to live and raise a family of their own? I want it to be North Lawndale. I’m asking for your help.

  • As for tax money being used; I expect nothing more and nothing less for this President's Library. Although, once the republicans realized that Barack would have a Library, just like every other president since FDR, they changed the law, drastically increasing the amount of money that the Obama Foundation would have to deposit in an escrow account. But that money is raised by the Foundation from private contributors.

Who's in Charge of North Lawdale's Destiny,the People or the 5% ?

We say we want change, how much do we really want it, moreover, what other kinds of changes are crucially needed now?

Now that we know all about fly dumping and we can no longer tolerate filth, the city of Chicago offers a reward, what else?

Let's start with Education, how do we encourage our Young and Old Men to "Pull their Pants Up", have some self dignity, self respect, higher self esteem, and morals. Who's the blame, the people or the 5% for sagging pants?

What happen to Good Manners, cordials attitudes, is it so far of reach that we just don't care, or is it that we fear correcting individuals?

To Flee, or Not to Flee

Consideration for the quality of housing, transportation, recreation, education, affordability, security and more go into selecting a place to live and raise your family.

Security is probably the highest concern of any parent. Fear of one's environment is the demon that has always crippled our spiritual growth and peace of mind. We can always run and flee in search of that fundamental right to be free of the ugly bully who might live next door or down the street, or stands insidiously on the corner. Participating and getting involved with your neighbors and organizations is one method of giving your community what you want to receive from your community.

  • SIR SEL OF NORTH LAWNDALE AND BEYOND I'm a community filth and fear fighter

It's always an honor to hear and/or see yourself quoted. You are absolutely right; God will fight your battles, if you throw the first punch. Sometimes that first punch can be in the form of clearing and sanitizing the air and environment with a simple word of truth.

Before I knew it, I ran out of the currency exchange, yelling from the pit of my guts "stop it ! leave him alone! ". The cowards turned, ran back into their vehicle. At that point, the petitions didn't matter, the life did.

What I don't understand is, why didn't the 10 or more adults run out to join me in the interruption of what could have been a lost life; the thing, that's prompt my actions to become alderwoman.

Were the 10 or more adults in shock or did I over re-acted, what would you have done?

I have a humble history of diving into simular incidents in which the reaction could have gone extremely wrong for me. Of course, each situation was not planned, as in your act of valor, pride, responsibility.
Some of these bazaar situations could have cooked my goose and people reviewing my actions would have called me crazy, a dumb fool, insane and worse. I have honestly questioned what was on my mind, what was I trying to prove.
Do you ever watch the Gazelles in Africa when they are being
pursued by a predator? They'll run like hell trying to escape the claws and jaws of a four legged, hungry beast.
Once the chase has resulted in fresh, Gazelle steaks for the Lions, Cheetahs and Alligators, there's is calm and peace within the herd. I have always mused over the Gazelles not uniting to use their antlers to charge the the predator(s).
They seem to take on the attitude of the others, who were watching you respond to the incident of the cheap cowards.
There has always been someone to teach us the 'skill' to deal, but the 'will' is still an inside job. Treasure your 'will' (and protect it), for it is a rare blessing in our community.
