MLK Day Updates | Is There a Media Blackout of the West Side Bid?

With the recent press covering the South Side Obama Presidential Library bid, West Side stakeholders are beginning to wonder if there is a deliberate blackout of the West Side bid. Read updates from the North Lawndale Presidential Library Committee here.

This Library will not be a gift, no questions asked.
That was a cute little press release last week, but we need to be bolder in our statement.

The University of Chicago is being allowed to change their bid, after the filing dead line. If I'm wrong in my understanding, please somebody explain to me.

I wouldn't be able to walk all the way, but will participate

The Resurrection Project

In my various explorations throughout social media (Twitter, Facebook, Pilsen Portal, etc.) I invariably come across positive accounts of The Resurrection Project's (TRP) initiatives in the neighborhoods of Pilsen, Little Village, and Back of the Yards. Most of these accounts come directly from TRP itself or organizations associated to TRP.

I have no doubt that TRP is doing good work in the community, but I'm finding it difficult to get objective viewpoints through the usual channels. I want to hear from people who have had direct experiences with this organization without the spin. I want to know what this organization does well and where it falls short.

  • My concern stems from the development going up on Damen, just north of 18th. I believe it will be called Casa Querétaro. I'm concerned that the development may be out of character for the area. Additionally, what kind of resources do they have for managing a building of 49 units....

My concern stems from the development going up on Damen, just north of 18th. I believe it will be called Casa Querétaro. I'm concerned that the development may be out of character for the area. Additionally, what kind of resources do they have for managing a building of 49 units. I've checked some of their buildings for violations on the city's website. The new complexes don't have violations, but a lot of the older ones do.

Thus, I want to hear from folks that have lived in housing managed by TRP. Are the buildings well run, are they slumlords, what is their screening process for selecting future tenants? Many of my friends may be interested and they have raised all of the above issues. I want 1st hand accounts from folks who have had positive/negative experiences with TRP.

  • Yes! Help out in this endevor.

Presidential Library

Several months ago, I proposed that North Lawndale campaign to get the Barack Obama Presidential Library located here. That idea was quickly dismissed because Hyde Park seemed like THE logical place for it. There is a serious discussion about why it should NOT be at (or maybe even near?) the University of Chicago. Think of what a presidential library could do for our neighborhood. Take a look at this interview from channel 11. http://chicagotonight.wttw.com/2012/06/26/u-c-prof-obamas-library-should-stay-away

If you agree, now is the time to start campaigning for its placement here.

  • Can we get a national campaign going for the west side? There are "North Lawndales" all over the country that are overlooked. This can help change focus. Here is what I'm sending to all of my out of town contacts.

I am trying to get support for a project which can have national significance. There are campaigns going on to get President Obama's presidential library built near the University of Chicago's campus (south side of the city). The Obama's have many ties to that area so people tend to conclude that that is where it will be.
However, the west side of Chicago tends to be the poorer area. It is also an old area of the city. It is where Dr King moved to and lived in 1966 to make a difference. However, after his assasination, the area sank deeper into dysfunction.
President Obama has been inextricably linked with Dr. King. What a public and permanent sign of honor and respect to help fulfill Dr. King's mission here on the westside of Chicago.
Imagine the impact that could make on depressed areas all over the country. Think of how much history could be preserved. We need suggestions, email and letter writing campaigns from across the country asking the Obama's to consider placing his presidential library on the west side of Chicago.

Presidential Library Complaint

I’ve recently heard complaints that the University of Chicago (U of C) should not have a do-over with its bid. The argument is that everybody’s bid response was due on December 11, 2014 and that those bids should stand as-is. My understanding of the process is that after receiving the responses, the Foundation would contact the bidders for additional information and to clear up any concerns. I don’t think U of C should be disqualified because they don’t own any of the land that they are proposing. I think they should have never proposed Chicago’s parkland in the first place. That should help U of C lose, not disqualify them. I’m not looking for anyone’s disqualification. I do expect the process to be based on merits. On that basis, North Lawndale would prevail. I have faith in our site and the Foundation’s process. http://www.obamapresidentialfoundation.org/news/the-barack-obama-foundation-releases-request-for-qualifications

Thanks for sharing that, Sel. Who is the "they" you mentioned in your statement above?

  • SIR SEL OF NORTH LAWNDALE AND BEYOND I'm a community filth and fear fighter

"They" are the North Lawndale Adult Transitional Center. They didn't literally say it; that was me using my literary creativity and stuff, but I have the juice to make it happen.

OPL Public Meeting

There are 2 public meetings concerning the University of Chicago’s plans to take Chicago Park District land for its Presidential Library bid. It would probably be a good idea if the Westside attended these meetings.
A meeting to discuss Jackson Park will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Hyde Park Academy High School, 6220 S. Stony Island Ave. Washington Park will be discussed at noon on Jan. 14 at the park’s field house, 5531 S. Martin Luther King Drive.
I hope that anyone who goes to these meetings keeps in mind that we are trying to respectfully convince the Obama's that North Lawndale is the place to build. With that in mind, I hope that we conduct ourselves accordingly.

I appreciated your article, Paul, but I need to hear from you regarding the hearings next week. Our presence needs to be felt, as never before. The mayor needs to explain why both hearings are being held on the Southside.

  • The 2 scheduled meetings on the Southside are to address the city's plans to confiscate acres of Southside park district land for the OPL. The Southside seems to be the logical place for these meetings.
