the music i hear coming in through the alley....

I really like the music of this particular band that I hear practicing somewhere nearby. I hear it from my window coming in from the alley north of 18th & Carpenter. It sounds like big band or jazz with husky female vocals. I can't locate the building they're in. They were practicing tonight. I'd be much obliged if someone knows who they are. Thanks!

  • I think there is a rehearsal space above the barbeque place on 18th. Maybe the sound is coming from there? I've walked by before and heard bands playing.

  • Yeah I'm thinking it's above honky Tonk on 18th n Racine. I live gone the street n hear them all the time.

The City of Chicago is pleased to inform you that the application period for the entry-level Firefighter/EMT exam started July 16, 2014 and will run through September 16. This is the period of time when applicants can sign up for the exam, which will be administered on December 13 and 14, 2014. In 2006, the age to sit for the exam was 19 and the age to enter the academy was 20. We have lowered the age to sit for the exam and enter the academy to 18. It is our hope that younger individuals who get on the eligibility list will be motivated to attend college and stay out of trouble and will find a sense of opportunity about their futures.

Attached is the job announcement, as well as the FAQ’s, which provides all of the key information about the application process and the exam. In case you’d like to cut-and-paste the link to the application website, here it is: www.cityofchicago.org/FireApplication. The website also contains links to additional information.

During the posting period, applicants can call (312) 744-4976 or email fire-application@cityofchicago.org with any questions or concerns, and they can also seek assistance in Room 100 in City Hall.

We have also modified the way candidates can apply for Veterans Preference. Applicants may apply for Veterans Preference at any time, even after the posting has closed. There is no longer a cutoff date for the submission of documents showing eligibility for Veterans Preference. However, the later the preference is applied for, the later it will be applied. Detailed instructions on how to apply for the Veterans Preference are included in the attached FAQs.

6:32am am Sunday July 6th .Yes I did call 911. Had to call twice in 30 minutes. I saw a cruiser slowly going down State twice but they never came until I called a second time.Officer King did not get out of his vehicle and said nothing except he would call animal control...BY LAW POLICE ARE REQUIRED TO FILE A REPORT in a situation like this at least.. I asked for help getting the truck door open. He drove away after a couple of minutes and after calling an Animal Control Officer. The dog was yelping so loudly you could hear it a block away. After Officer King, 2nd District, left I called UHAUL..then began pushing apartment buzzers at 68 E. 57th Street. Finally a tenant came out and I asked if he knew who was renting the truck. He knocked on a first floor window and 5 minutes later a man came out and let the dog loose. It was about 6 months old, a german sheperd mix. CPD refuse to uphold animal cruelty laws in place.

No buzzer system in bldng. Legal?

Am curious- been living in apt for months and landlord has yet to install buzzer/doorbell system on the front of bldng, despite being repeatedly asked to do so - by multiple tenants.

I can't receive any package deliveries ever (super inconvenient) and food deliveries or visitors have to call upon arrival (mildly inconvenient). Anyone know if this is legal and/or if there are tenant laws regarding having a buzzer?Just wondering.

  • I don't see anything in the code that addresses requirements for doorbells and they aren't something that can easily be added to an existing multi-unit building unless it is pre-wired for the system.

You are probably better off by installing your own wireless system, like this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Heath-Zenith-Wireless-Plug-In-Door-Chime-Kit-DL-6166/202209335

You can take it with you when you move and the hardest part is figuring out how to secure it to the gate/side of the building.

  • Please do not install anything till you follow/read Guidelines in Chicago's Municipal Code, if the landlord is not given proper notice, if any repairs are not done. You can be charged by the landlord to put things back in original condition, thats from nail/screw holes to using a glue substance that can leave marks. There is protection for tenants, but also for landlords.

Open-Space Advocates Vow to Protect Parking Lots?

Chicago beat out Los Angeles and San Francisco as the future site of the George Lucas museum, a facility that's sure to be a worldwide tourism destination, yet it's already opposed by open-space advocates.

If this was a serene lake shore wetland, or even a beach, I could understand the desire to protect it from development. But, according to news reports, it's a couple parking lots between Soldier Field and McCormick Place.

Not sure what we'd be protecting by preventing the development of parking lots.

The Chicago Trib story is at this link:

Because there were plans to turn it into parkland, it's not in the museum campus. It's east of the drive that is not supposed to be built on. McCormick PL East wasn't supposed to be there. First will come another museum then other buildings will follow, once you erode the law on this, you will get more buildings and the lakefront will be lost as it is. All the politicians care about is $$$$.

Instead of putting up a building, because it's parking, turn it back into parkland. Hey if you can remove an airport and make that into Northerly Island, why not?

Be careful here, these fat cats don't care about the quality of life on the south side.

Door to door energy people?

Has anyone else had people coming to their door wanting to talk about your energy provider? A young man knocked on my door about it this afternoon and wanted to talk about it. He didn't identify himself. I asked how he got into our building and he said someone buzzed him in. I had him leave because we don't allow people to go door-to-door in our building soliciting. Was this guy legit or part of a scam I always hear going around?

  • Last summer as I was entering apt building 2 of these 'energy' reps came up behind me and were trying to enter the building, I let them know that they could not enter and solicit, I was called ever name in the book by one of these people. I called 311, the 311 operator treated me as if I had no right to call them, I asked for a supervisor, I was left on hold, I hung up. Thats life in the big city...

Now that I'm seeing all of these posts, I think we have a couple of choices:

    1. Just don't answer your door. Barring that. . .

PLEASE be completely observant about age, gender, appearance (hair color and cut, eyes/glasses, piercings) also, height, weight/size, and what clothes the people are wearing - especially anything unusual.

Also. If you stand inside your door talking to them, KEEP THE DOOR LOCKED.

    2. Ask for ID. Ask to see their city authorization to solicit door-to-door, something from whomever it is they're claiming to represent, and/or their personal state ID. Maybe all of that. (Actually, I don't know whether the city issues such things.)

    3. Ask the person's name and WHAT organization they are representing, the address and telephone number of that organization (so you can call and make a report).

If they can't produce anything, just quietly close and lock your door.

If you feel imminent danger or threatened in any way, of course, call 9-1-1 immediately. If you think that it IS some kind of ruse to get in your house, tell the operator that. Just tell the truth if you felt uncomfortable or that things were "off." Don't lie.

Be prepared to describe the people to officers when/if they arrive.

    Having read the other posts made me think twice about what I might have done had it turned out that the people at my door were NOT who they claimed to be. And, of course, now I'm going to be much more cautious and prepared! {sigh}

"What a world. What a world."

Some of the playground features are rusted out, broken, sharp and totally dangerous. There is gang graffiti on the cement bleachers around the basketball court. People walk their dogs to poop in there even though there is a sign that clearly states this is not allowed, most likely because pet owners know no one cares.

It has such amazing untapped potential but is currently so sad and frankly, quite unsafe for our kids. I've reached out to the 25th Ward Alderman in multiple ways with no response. Any insight on what steps I could take next to convince the powers that be to give it some much needed TLC?

Any feedback super appreciated!
