Construction on Lots located S. Jourdan Ct.

Morning All,

Just wondering if anyone had some insight: Our office is located at 1932 S. Halsted and our office overlooks S. Jourdan Ct. where two empty lots are located. We've noticed a lot of digging happening and were curious if anyone knew what sort of plans have been made for said lots. I realize we could probably ask one of our maintenance men, but I thought I'd reach out to the community first.

Side Note: it looks like they were removing some sort of tanks as well. We know that there use to be houses on that location that were lost in a fire, but we're curious what these giant tanks were used for. My co worker did a brief permit history search but couldn't find much info.

Thanks in Advance and have great day everyone!

  • Those lots have been dirty eyesores for years - glad something is happening with them

  • Amanda Noble Sq/Wicker Park/ Ukrainian Village

Just the short time we've been here, we totally agree. Eyesore indeed. Just wondering what could be going on. It's not the most ideal place for say apartments..

I keep thinking maybe parking? Extension of the park right there? Something to do with the school? Or an art performance I don't understand.

I posted the lines below on 800notes.com with the intention of warning other possible victims. I am one of them. I met him online, which is were he finds possible prospects for his frauds. I completely understand that it is my own responsibility and mine alone for signing anything on his behalf, but the way he cons and convinces is the part
that I find completely unethical and immoral. Aracely knows about his behavior and has acted as an willing accomplice.

"Cristobal Vargas from Chicago is after single women and has committed fraud with at least 10 victims. He gets them to sign for loans, cars, apartments, etc and then takes off on them. He is a Mexican individual, Cris Vargas, or Cristobal Vargas aka Santiago Vargas or Santiago Ortiz, living at 5105 W 31 place, Cicero, Illinois." As far as I know, his latest cell phone number is 773-543-6127.

Stop him, do something. Don't let this go on any longer.

Lead Work Area Poison signs now on S Blue Island

Two days ago Lead Work Area Poison signs mysteriously appeared on the metal posts supporting the viaduct on S Blue Island north of 16th. (No information on who to call if community residents have questions. Nothing.) Yesterday when walking my dogs I found two dead birds one block north of where these signs are located. Who owns this viaduct and who is conducting the lead work?

  • That viaduct is in the process of being torn up. I understand that there will be some drainage work done in advance of a future re-build of the viaduct. (Currently, there are several truck strikes a week in the viaduct and the roadway needs to be lowered.

The entire neighborhood is contaminated with lead and other heavy metals. Some parts of the neighborhood are actual SuperFund sites: http://epa.gov/region5/littlevillagepilsen/

This stuff is a larger issue when dust is being made and stirred up. Even than, it's not acutely toxic - so it wouldn't be something that did in the pigeons. Lead builds up in the system over time and children are especially susceptible - so you just don't want to hang out in dust clouds or let kids play around them.

BTW - There are two viaducts. Union Pacific owns the north one and part of the south one and BNSF has the remainder of the south viaduct. (It looks like BNSF manages the maintenance on the entire south one.) If you are still concerned, they both have community relations people who you can talk to. I've worked with BNSF and got immediate responses and they were really nice to work with.

Many thanks for offering to share contact info at BNSF. The viaduct in question (the one with the Lead Work Area Poison signs) is the north one, so I will reach out to Union Pacific.

In October of last year, Anne contacted Tree House to inquire about our Cats at Work (CAW) program whereby Tree House relocates feral cats in need to caregivers who want to support a feral colony. Anne and her husband Doug had been battling rats in East Lakeview for years, and losing. When a rat ran over Doug’s foot, that was the last straw. By the time I met Anne to do a site visit and review details of the program, she had already done copious research on feral cat colonies and was ready to take the next step.

Allie, Eloise and Duke had been living in a large pen in a west side Chicago neighborhood. Their former caregivers had way to many cats. Neighbors were getting angry and threatening the cats. Community Cats Coordinator Erica Roewade was able to work with the family to spay/neuter all of their cats and remove many kittens. But living in a pen was no life for feral cats. The “Rat Pack,” as Anne calls them, are thriving in their new environment whereby they are beloved by the entire block! And the rat problem: GONE.
Anne also conducted survey research on American’s attitudes toward stray cats, TNR programs, and spaying/neutering. She learned that feral cat programs have a huge impact on the caretakers of the colonies, on the neighbors, on the community, and on the cats themselves and details those findings in Community Cats.

  • I wanted to get a couple cats through one of the TNR programs. But my neighbor is very opposed to having cats around. I don't want to upset my neighbor, but the rats are a real problem. They have made a home under my garage.

My neighbor has 2 little Yorkies - I'd think a cat would avoid her yard right? I have a shepherd & I don't see cats come in my yard ever, and I know there are a couple in the vicinity.

Could you tell me what are the drawbacks are of having neutered cats roam free? I know there is at least one unneutered cat who is definitely a pet (I know the guy who owns him), and I've seen the cat in my bushes, where anyone who knows the scent will tell you cats are using my bushes as a toilet. I really would like to get a feral or two to give a home to in my garage. Especially now, because I have a pop-up camper in there that I'm worried will soon be occupied by the rats. I may just go ahead & take in a cat or two, and if they cause any problems for the neighbor I could work with the organization to rehome them, or return them I suppose.

  • BDuggan here is the solution to your issue. Contact erica@treehouseanimals.org. There are residents who have registered colony cats in Pilsen and Bridgeport..no rats in those alleys that is for sure. Neighbors support it. Fun to be a caretaker too.http://www.treehouseanimals.org/site/DocServer/Cats_at_Work_FactSheet.pdf?docID=322

On 9/11 we remember and we also use it as a day to give back. In recent years supporters advocate for a 9/11 Service Day as a way to give back to the community. I hope folks think about ways to get more connected with local events and help each other. Many of you know I am advocating for routine viaduct sanitation programs. Please take a moment to sign and share our petition. It's easy to fill out. Tell folks all around how important it is that the city hear your perspective about why current policies are ineffective and unsanitary. Let's all make a difference.

Tragedy @ Cullerton/Michigan

The head of the stone gargoyle statue on the 2nd Presbyterian Church fell off the church at around 11:30 AM this morning, and with grave misfortune, hit a woman in the head. I was home (live across the street) and heard her companion's screams. I have attached a picture of the church tower and you can see where the head of the right gargoyle is missing. My thoughts and prayers go out to the woman's companion, her family and friends. I hope she survives this. I am so deeply saddened by this.

Now the 2nd Presbyterian Church is being Inspected...

A day late...

  • They've been inspected every year and have passed. It's an unfortunate incident. I highly doubt the church wanted that to happen.

  • Silly to say the church didn't want it to happen...that could probably be a given. Also, despite an inspection by the city over a year ago, the church is still responsible to keep their structure sound. Given that they failed previous inspections, and the building is almost 113 years old, it should be relatively clear that they need to perform regular maintenance on the structure.

No matter the intent, the fault lies clearly with the church and its operational management.

No, the church only "passed" the last 2 years. It failed, at least according to the article I read yesterday, the previous 5 years. It's nonsense to think anyone wanted such a thing to happen, but in the years I have owned the loft directly across the street with the absolutely most direct view of the tower, I have never seen a full-scale inspection of the church constructed of a material more suited to the Egyptian desert than the upper Midwest. And, I certainly have never seen the cherry picker with engineers scouring the bell tower's surface like I am watching this very moment. I have video of them tapping the surface and material falling off the side. So, I am not sure what inspection you are referring to, but I have never seen occur what's going on right now. The piece of metailc facade that fell and knocked the gargoyle loose is on each corner of the bell tower. Two on the southwest corner had already fallen off. It is not like this was an unknown issue or risk.

I think the larger issue is what do we as a community and city do about buildings like the church. It was designated as a National Landmark last year, and was lauded far and wide for the prestige, but in the 18 months since that pronouncement occurred, I have not seen any of the broken windows fixed or the deteriorating exterior renovated. The most work I have seen performed is the doors were painted. I fully realize it is a private building and it is the church's responsibility to maintain it, but if we, as a society, so prize its presence that we impose legal restrictions on what can happen to it going forward, then we collectively need to contribute to its upkeep and not endanger those in and around the church.

The Resurrection Basketball League's free culminating event will take place this Friday, August 29th at EL Zocalo located at 1818 South Paulina Ave. Chicago, IL 60608

We will be celebrating our accomplishments with an awards ceremony and a Back to School Bash. There will be free food, back-to-school supplies and activities for the entire family. We will close of the night with the Pilsen Parishes Cluster Mass being celebrated by Bishop Alberto Rojas.

Our Resurrection Basketball League reached and engaged over 1,000 Pilsen community members who participated in our activities throughout the 8 week program.

Special thanks to the residents from the different street blocks who hosted us (from Western to Halsted). We are happy to continue to work on peace and safety issues in our community.
