Will burns and Rahm at jones college prep

I have never been as infuriated as I was today when alderman Fioretti was excluded from the jones festivities. Will burns had nothing to do with jones. Fioretti worked tirelessly with all parties to make Jones what it is today, now Rahm and burns have excluded him and taking credit. Their behavior is disgraceful and disrespectful. Contact them and express your sentiments.

  • South Loop truth Poliical activist

Children are dying, schools are being closed and all she does is vote with Rahm to cut the amount of police and allow his appointed school board to close schools and have more charters to reward his friends like Bruce Rauner.

9/11 Service Day

On 9/11 we remember and we also use it as a day to give back. In recent years supporters advocate for a 9/11 Service Day as a way to give back to the community. I hope folks think about ways to get more connected with local events and help each other. Many of you know I am advocating for routine viaduct sanitation programs. Please take a moment to sign and share our petition. It's easy to fill out. Tell folks all around how important it is that the city hear your perspective about why current policies are ineffective and unsanitary. Let's all make a difference.

Tragedy @ Cullerton/Michigan

The head of the stone gargoyle statue on the 2nd Presbyterian Church fell off the church at around 11:30 AM this morning, and with grave misfortune, hit a woman in the head. I was home (live across the street) and heard her companion's screams. I have attached a picture of the church tower and you can see where the head of the right gargoyle is missing. My thoughts and prayers go out to the woman's companion, her family and friends. I hope she survives this. I am so deeply saddened by this.

  • Ruby in Bronzeville Engaged neighborhood advocate

Our prayers are with her companion and family - what an awful accident.

  • David Thomas Rowe university commons

Wow, life turns on a dime. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims.

Now the 2nd Presbyterian Church is being Inspected...

A day late...

  • They've been inspected every year and have passed. It's an unfortunate incident. I highly doubt the church wanted that to happen.

  • Silly to say the church didn't want it to happen...that could probably be a given. Also, despite an inspection by the city over a year ago, the church is still responsible to keep their structure sound. Given that they failed previous inspections, and the building is almost 113 years old, it should be relatively clear that they need to perform regular maintenance on the structure.

No matter the intent, the fault lies clearly with the church and its operational management.

  • Craig Stanley Board President Locomobile Lofts

No, the church only "passed" the last 2 years. It failed, at least according to the article I read yesterday, the previous 5 years. It's nonsense to think anyone wanted such a thing to happen, but in the years I have owned the loft directly across the street with the...

No, the church only "passed" the last 2 years. It failed, at least according to the article I read yesterday, the previous 5 years. It's nonsense to think anyone wanted such a thing to happen, but in the years I have owned the loft directly across the street with the absolutely most direct view of the tower, I have never seen a full-scale inspection of the church constructed of a material more suited to the Egyptian desert than the upper Midwest. And, I certainly have never seen the cherry picker with engineers scouring the bell tower's surface like I am watching this very moment. I have video of them tapping the surface and material falling off the side. So, I am not sure what inspection you are referring to, but I have never seen occur what's going on right now. The piece of metailc facade that fell and knocked the gargoyle loose is on each corner of the bell tower. Two on the southwest corner had already fallen off. It is not like this was an unknown issue or risk.

I think the larger issue is what do we as a community and city do about buildings like the church. It was designated as a National Landmark last year, and was lauded far and wide for the prestige, but in the 18 months since that pronouncement occurred, I have not seen any of the broken windows fixed or the deteriorating exterior renovated. The most work I have seen performed is the doors were painted. I fully realize it is a private building and it is the church's responsibility to maintain it, but if we, as a society, so prize its presence that we impose legal restrictions on what can happen to it going forward, then we collectively need to contribute to its upkeep and not endanger those in and around the church.

With that said it only makes sense that when a inspection is being preformed at 9 am and you have fresh product (grated cheese, diced tomatoes; Chile rellenos or fresh cut meats) you are not going to get an good temperature reading. That is when time control is practiced over temperature control and it is a legit practice .The way we do things at Nuevo Leon defeats science unbelievable but true. To much volume can not keep up. Always fresh never frozen. We receive products daily 7 days a week twice a day . Nuevo Leon will continue to improve and make all corrections to comply to today's modern ways even though it might change the taste of certain dishes as well as tradition. I am a father first than a business man and I do understand all your concerns and fears for you and your family's health in your choice of food that you eat. In any of Nuevo Leon's interviews, facebook posts, everyblock posts, etc, you guys have yet to take any real responsibility for failing SO MANY inspections. The FACTS are that you have had SIX inspections so far, failing FOUR and only passing two "with conditions, meaning they found thing wrong that you had to fix. Those things not only didn't get fixed but problems were worse on the follow up inspections. To me, that defies logic, from a business owner standpoint.

I also take issue with the manager completely lying when interviewed about it. In a DNAInfo interview, he stated that the food that was above temperature was "only 2 degrees" above temp. REALLY? That;s funny because this is directly from one of the failed inspections:
We observed chile rellenos at 45.6f,raw steak at 46.9f,diced tomatoes at 45-52f,cheese at 49.1f.at food prep table we observed cooked chicken at 48.9-50.0f,chorizo and beef at 49.8f,red garlic salsa at 88.1f,etc.

Does that sounds like a 2 degree difference from being kept at 40 degrees or colder?

Everything about these inspections, going back to January, are disgusting. I've worked in the restaurant and hospitality industry since 1999 at various places and have never seen anything so blatantly dismissive of the health and well-being of the public that you are serving.

the music i hear coming in through the alley....

I really like the music of this particular band that I hear practicing somewhere nearby. I hear it from my window coming in from the alley north of 18th & Carpenter. It sounds like big band or jazz with husky female vocals. I can't locate the building they're in. They were practicing tonight. I'd be much obliged if someone knows who they are. Thanks!

  • I think there is a rehearsal space above the barbeque place on 18th. Maybe the sound is coming from there? I've walked by before and heard bands playing.
