  • Beyond the cremonial unveiling of a statue of Paul Laurence Dunbar, what is going on with the future educational curriculum of the underserved, disadvantaged predominantly AFRICAN-AMERICAN students who attend this revitalized urban high school campus in the historic Bronzeville community?

  • Certainly there must be some innovative writers workshops featuring the literary contributions of writers like Paul Lawrence Dunbar and other literary giants of the Black Cultural Renaissance that took place in Bronzeville! :-)

From La Casa to Your Casa: A family’s first college student sets her sights high

Karina Juarez, a student at La Casa Student Housing, is the first in her family to attend a university. Unlike her brothers, who saw more value in working and getting an immediate income to survive, Karina decided to go and get an education. She realized that in order to get somewhere in life she needed to go to school. “My parents are definitely proud of me for being the first one to go to college,” she said. Explosions

There have been repeated loud explosions during the day today. I called 311. They said they had several calls about it but knew nothing. I was transferred to 911 who also knew nothing. I was then transferred to fire dept and was told there was a "festival going on at Mercy Hospital" and that was the source of the explosions.

Will burns and Rahm at jones college prep

I have never been as infuriated as I was today when alderman Fioretti was excluded from the jones festivities. Will burns had nothing to do with jones. Fioretti worked tirelessly with all parties to make Jones what it is today, now Rahm and burns have excluded him and taking credit. Their behavior is disgraceful and disrespectful. Contact them and express your sentiments.

The ole race card is next. Don't forget to degrease that nasty floor ok. I'm not going there again. And I was born and raised in Pilzen.

With that said it only makes sense that when a inspection is being preformed at 9 am and you have fresh product (grated cheese, diced tomatoes; Chile rellenos or fresh cut meats) you are not going to get an good temperature reading. That is when time control is practiced over temperature control and it is a legit practice .The way we do things at Nuevo Leon defeats science unbelievable but true. To much volume can not keep up. Always fresh never frozen. We receive products daily 7 days a week twice a day . Nuevo Leon will continue to improve and make all corrections to comply to today's modern ways even though it might change the taste of certain dishes as well as tradition. I am a father first than a business man and I do understand all your concerns and fears for you and your family's health in your choice of food that you eat. REMEMBER THIS my customers and employees are my family and Nuevo Leon will not put you in any harm or danger.thank you all and have a blessed day. The Gutierrez Family.

In any of Nuevo Leon's interviews, facebook posts, everyblock posts, etc, you guys have yet to take any real responsibility for failing SO MANY inspections. The FACTS are that you have had SIX inspections so far, failing FOUR and only passing two "with conditions, meaning they found thing wrong that you had to fix. Those things not only didn't get fixed but problems were worse on the follow up inspections. To me, that defies logic, from a business owner standpoint.

I also take issue with the manager completely lying when interviewed about it. In a DNAInfo interview, he stated that the food that was above temperature was "only 2 degrees" above temp. REALLY? That;s funny because this is directly from one of the failed inspections:
We observed chile rellenos at 45.6f,raw steak at 46.9f,diced tomatoes at 45-52f,cheese at 49.1f.at food prep table we observed cooked chicken at 48.9-50.0f,chorizo and beef at 49.8f,red garlic salsa at 88.1f,etc.

Does that sounds like a 2 degree difference from being kept at 40 degrees or colder?

Everything about these inspections, going back to January, are disgusting. I've worked in the restaurant and hospitality industry since 1999 at various places and have never seen anything so blatantly dismissive of the health and well-being of the public that you are serving.

the music i hear coming in through the alley....

I really like the music of this particular band that I hear practicing somewhere nearby. I hear it from my window coming in from the alley north of 18th & Carpenter. It sounds like big band or jazz with husky female vocals. I can't locate the building they're in. They were practicing tonight. I'd be much obliged if someone knows who they are. Thanks!

  • I think there is a rehearsal space above the barbeque place on 18th. Maybe the sound is coming from there? I've walked by before and heard bands playing.

  • Yeah I'm thinking it's above honky Tonk on 18th n Racine. I live gone the street n hear them all the time.

The City of Chicago is pleased to inform you that the application period for the entry-level Firefighter/EMT exam started July 16, 2014 and will run through September 16. This is the period of time when applicants can sign up for the exam, which will be administered on December 13 and 14, 2014. In 2006, the age to sit for the exam was 19 and the age to enter the academy was 20. We have lowered the age to sit for the exam and enter the academy to 18. It is our hope that younger individuals who get on the eligibility list will be motivated to attend college and stay out of trouble and will find a sense of opportunity about their futures.

Attached is the job announcement, as well as the FAQ’s, which provides all of the key information about the application process and the exam. In case you’d like to cut-and-paste the link to the application website, here it is: www.cityofchicago.org/FireApplication. The website also contains links to additional information.

During the posting period, applicants can call (312) 744-4976 or email fire-application@cityofchicago.org with any questions or concerns, and they can also seek assistance in Room 100 in City Hall.

We have also modified the way candidates can apply for Veterans Preference. Applicants may apply for Veterans Preference at any time, even after the posting has closed. There is no longer a cutoff date for the submission of documents showing eligibility for Veterans Preference. However, the later the preference is applied for, the later it will be applied. Detailed instructions on how to apply for the Veterans Preference are included in the attached FAQs.

6:32am am Sunday July 6th .Yes I did call 911. Had to call twice in 30 minutes. I saw a cruiser slowly going down State twice but they never came until I called a second time.Officer King did not get out of his vehicle and said nothing except he would call animal control...BY LAW POLICE ARE REQUIRED TO FILE A REPORT in a situation like this at least.. I asked for help getting the truck door open. He drove away after a couple of minutes and after calling an Animal Control Officer. The dog was yelping so loudly you could hear it a block away. After Officer King, 2nd District, left I called UHAUL..then began pushing apartment buzzers at 68 E. 57th Street. Finally a tenant came out and I asked if he knew who was renting the truck. He knocked on a first floor window and 5 minutes later a man came out and let the dog loose. It was about 6 months old, a german sheperd mix. CPD refuse to uphold animal cruelty laws in place.
