Presidential Library

Several months ago, I proposed that North Lawndale campaign to get the Barack Obama Presidential Library located here. That idea was quickly dismissed because Hyde Park seemed like THE logical place for it. There is a serious discussion about why it should NOT be at (or maybe even near?) the University of Chicago. Think of what a presidential library could do for our neighborhood. Take a look at this interview from channel 11. http://chicagotonight.wttw.com/2012/06/26/u-c-prof-obamas-library-should-stay-away

If you agree, now is the time to start campaigning for its placement here.

  • Can we get a national campaign going for the west side? There are "North Lawndales" all over the country that are overlooked. This can help change focus. Here is what I'm sending to all of my out of town contacts.

I am trying to get support for a project which can have national significance. There are campaigns going on to get President Obama's presidential library built near the University of Chicago's campus (south side of the city). The Obama's have many ties to that area so people tend to conclude that that is where it will be.
However, the west side of Chicago tends to be the poorer area. It is also an old area of the city. It is where Dr King moved to and lived in 1966 to make a difference. However, after his assasination, the area sank deeper into dysfunction.
President Obama has been inextricably linked with Dr. King. What a public and permanent sign of honor and respect to help fulfill Dr. King's mission here on the westside of Chicago.
Imagine the impact that could make on depressed areas all over the country. Think of how much history could be preserved. We need suggestions, email and letter writing campaigns from across the country asking the Obama's to consider placing his presidential library on the west side of Chicago.

Presidential Library Complaint

I’ve recently heard complaints that the University of Chicago (U of C) should not have a do-over with its bid. The argument is that everybody’s bid response was due on December 11, 2014 and that those bids should stand as-is. My understanding of the process is that after receiving the responses, the Foundation would contact the bidders for additional information and to clear up any concerns. I don’t think U of C should be disqualified because they don’t own any...

My understanding of the process is that after receiving the responses, the Foundation would contact the bidders for additional information and to clear up any concerns. I don’t think U of C should be disqualified because they don’t own any of the land that they are proposing. I think they should have never proposed Chicago’s parkland in the first place. That should help U of C lose, not disqualify them. I’m not looking for anyone’s disqualification. I do expect the process to be based on merits. On that basis, North Lawndale would prevail. I have faith in our site and the Foundation’s process. http://www.obamapresidentialfoundation.org/news/the-barack-obama-foundation-releases-request-for-qualifications

Thanks for sharing that, Sel. Who is the "they" you mentioned in your statement above?

  • SIR SEL OF NORTH LAWNDALE AND BEYOND I'm a community filth and fear fighter

"They" are the North Lawndale Adult Transitional Center. They didn't literally say it; that was me using my literary creativity and stuff, but I have the juice to make it happen.

OPL Public Meeting

There are 2 public meetings concerning the University of Chicago’s plans to take Chicago Park District land for its Presidential Library bid. It would probably be a good idea if the Westside attended these meetings.
A meeting to discuss Jackson Park will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Hyde Park Academy High School, 6220 S. Stony Island Ave. Washington Park will be discussed at noon on Jan. 14 at the park’s field house, 5531 S. Martin Luther King Drive.
I hope that anyone who goes to these meetings keeps in mind that we are trying to respectfully convince the Obama's that North Lawndale is the place to build. With that in mind, I hope that we conduct ourselves accordingly.

I appreciated your article, Paul, but I need to hear from you regarding the hearings next week. Our presence needs to be felt, as never before. The mayor needs to explain why both hearings are being held on the Southside.

  • The 2 scheduled meetings on the Southside are to address the city's plans to confiscate acres of Southside park district land for the OPL. The Southside seems to be the logical place for these meetings.

Will Current Residents Benefit from the Proposed UIC-North Lawndale Obama Presidential Library?

The public meetings I attended regarding the proposed UIC-North North Lawndale Presidential Library did not provide the full scope of the project. In fact, a meeting that I helped produce did not include the full scope because the information was not publicly available at the time. The more I read, the more it is clear that a number of questions must be asked and answered regarding the scope of the project. I'm still reading the proposal that was submitted on...

I'm still reading the proposal that was submitted on December 11, 2014. Here is an excerpt.

“Forming a new town square in North Lawndale, the Library and Museum would operate as a hub to generate commercial and residential development spurred on by the CTA’s commitment to re-open the Kostner Blue Line Station, the City’s promise of small business loans, and the generous support of a $5 million grant from the Steans Family Foundation. Based on available resources a new University component proposed Center for Urban Resilience and Engagement would initially adapt under-utilized structures along the defunct “Sears line” viaduct that enters the middle of the site from the east, setting up a campus spine along a new bike trail and pedestrian corridor. The development of a BRT Bus Rapid Transit along Roosevelt would connect this new Obama Campus the Museum Campus n the lakefront, and set up future commercial and university development along the Roosevelt corridor, modeled along lines of the University’s earlier success with its mixed-use South Campus extension....

Off the top of my head, home ownership for North Lawndale is in the 21%-25% range. You can look at the old structures in the heart of the community, with all the multi-unit buildings to know that this community was never designed to have a majority of the homes to be owner-occupied. I do agree with your observation that many residents are transient.

So, my input on our proposal to the Obama library would be to position the communal partnership to structure the area based on a college campus type development with the library being the focal point. What if we could change the multi unit buildings into more of a dorm dwelling for say UIC (at least in part) with shuttles and a Pink Line that runs right to the campus? I envision much the same structure they currently have for U of C where the draw of better schools and and economic structure does exist - at least in part.

Charter Schools and Politics

I got this from my friend Alonso Zaragoza:

"One of my friends is a parent of a child in a Noble Charter school and on the parent committee for the school. She said that Stand For Children has been going to the school recruiting parents to work on the Mayor's campaign telling people that If the Mayor loses, their charter school will be closed. They are also recruiting parents for pro-charter aldermanic campaigns in Noble schools and other Charter networks....

They are also recruiting parents for pro-charter aldermanic campaigns in Noble schools and other Charter networks. FYI"

Adding my two cents: Governor-Elect Bruce Rauner is the Chairman of the Board for the Nobel Charter Schools. He was instrumental in providing the funds for Stand for Children to come to Chicago to provide advocacy for school reform, which for the most part has been pro-charter. Stand for Children is a tax exempt, 501 (c) (3) organization. They should NOT be engaged in partisan politics. Unless they have a political action arm, they could be jeopardizing their tax exempt status by supporting the Mayor and specific pro-charter candidates.

Regardless, this sets a terrible precedent--having publicly-funded schools being used as part of a political apparatus.

Chicago Mayoral, 24th Ward Candidates Court West Side Voters At Local Forum

Chicago aldermanic hopefuls running in the West Side's crowded 24th Ward race made their pitch to voters at a Tuesday night candidate forum, with many vowing to, if elected, boost employment and economic opportunities in the North Lawndale community.

Eight of the 12 candidates vying to replace retiring Ald. Michael Chandler (24th), who announced earlier this month that he would not seek re-election, attended the forum, held at One Way Baptist Church, 4152 W. 16th St.

Mayoral candidates Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd), Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia and community activist William 'Dock' Walls also made brief remarks at the event, attended by about 50 people. People Running for Alderman, Can any of them name the 3 Branches of Government? Embarrassing :(

I just saw some of the strangest people putting their name on the ballot of Alderman. One happens to be an old neighbor who lived across the street from me. Just holding a conversation with her has been mind-numbing because her view as well as her childrens views have been "Leave our neighborhood alone, we are not going to change anything" And they have pretty much Adored all of the Drugs being sold, their TRASH surrounding their homes and the...

Just holding a conversation with her has been mind-numbing because her view as well as her childrens views have been "Leave our neighborhood alone, we are not going to change anything" And they have pretty much Adored all of the Drugs being sold, their TRASH surrounding their homes and the blocks and being a LARGE CONTRIBUTOR TO The Negative Ways of the neighborhood. Does anyone have a platform? What do you plan on doing? Have you ever managed anything other than papers in front of you at work? I am embarassed that these running lack education, don't know how government is ran, made no effort to get an education.. This is disgusting. It's just as worse than having 1000 churches in the 24th Ward. When does it end? It's pure ignorance. SO Is Life Time Runners who have put their names on the ballot 5 times already.. As if they didn't get the hint that NO ONE LIKES YOU so let your family and friends vote for someone a bit more promising.. THANKS FOR SPLITTING THE VOTE!! This ward will forever be the Dumping ground for Misfits!

I noticed a couple of new names that were added since the last time I checked this list out. I just pray that whoever wins will do what they are promising the 24th Ward in their campaign brochures and Facebook posts. Some of them have not put out any literature, or at least I haven't seen any. Maybe they are waiting until after the holidays.

I have waited 4 decades for the change, I hope one of them can be the force that makes it happen.

  • Project North Lawndale Why are the W.Side Alderman Paid for NOTHING?

Their conversations show that they lack education, have never seen many of them in the community doing anything yet they are running for Aldermen? Lawndale will forever be the laughing stock of ignorance. this is why you all never receive anything the majority of your neighbors don't care, the city doesn't either.. it's a dumping ground for misfits.. it looks like Frank BAss has a chance, he at least works for the city as a lobbyist. If you look at when these folks filed, it was somewhat a last minute ordeal like they just Thought about running, nothing else to do so why not continue to screw this ward over for a salary? I feel for you and hoping good measures come from all of this bizarre behavior

We had 15 candidates run last time, and the vote was so badly split that the former Alderman won it, mostly likely on name recognition. That won't happen again, since Mr. Chandler has withdrawn. Project North Lawndale makes an excellent point about credentials: what is this person's education? What has he/she done in the community since the last aldermanic election? What are this person's plans to involve community residents in his/her decisions? Mr. Chandler formed advisory committees, a worthy effort, but meetings were constantly cancelled, so they fizzled out. What is this candidate's plan to make sure the community is heard when we get the Obama Presidential Library? We can sit by and get steamrollered by UIC or demand that the community has a voting role in the plans and their effect on taxes and gentrification. What about the "menu" of $1 million which every alderman receives to spend in the community? Three aldermen in other wards have set up a process so the community decides how that money is spent. GET INVOLVED! Find out about the role of the alderman and evaluate candidates based on what they are likely to do for North Lawndale. What you do or don't do in this aldermanic campaign will have an effect on what gets done WITH OR TO North Lawndale in the next four years.

Are You Receiving Your Mail In A Timely Manner?

Has your mail been delivered to you in a timely manner? My mail was redirected to the sender from October 8 until November 29, 2014, stating Undeliverable.

More than a year ago, I obtained a POB because my mail was being tampered with, what an inconvenienced this caused me; on top of it, I had to pay $14.00 to have packages redelivered to me. Hopefully, I will receive a notice letting me know I have packages this time around.

The good thing about this problem was, the Supervisor of the Pulaski Station had to spend a day outside in the frigid weather with the Carrier.

With Christmas being near, I hope you will receive your mail on time.
