Where we get the data

The data is retrieved from this street closures list published by the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT).

How often we get the data

The list is updated every business day, and EveryBlock retrieves the data on a nightly basis.

About street closures in general

Note that these are scheduled closures as reflected in permits issued by the city. The majority of street closures are related to events such as block parties, festivals, parades and athletic events.

The remaining closures are categorized as "street full closure" and are mainly related to construction and utility projects. Note that the actual work associated with the underlying permit may already be completed and the street may, in fact, be open.

The Neighbors Project has a "Block Parties 101" guide for throwing a block party. A block party requires a permit, which is free and available from your alderman. Go to the city Web site to find your alderman.
