About property transfers

Summary

Every month, thousands of pieces of property change hands in Chicago. This section of EveryBlock will show you when property near you is sold — and in many cases, how much it sold for.

This data, which comes from the Cook County Recorder of Deeds, also provides the property's location, the date the sale was executed (when the papers were signed) and when the sale was recorded with the county. In some cases, no sale price is listed because the property changed hands between family members, and money wasn't part of the deal.

Sometimes, records in the transfer list don't contain addresses — usually because the papers filed with the county were difficult to read and couldn't be transcribed. Without addresses, we at EveryBlock can't publish the transfer. This means there is a possibility that a small number of transactions aren't included on EveryBlock.

Also note that we don't list buyers' or sellers' names, to respect people's privacy.

The data comes from the Cook County Recorder of Deeds, which releases a real-estate transfer list to subscribers every two weeks. We at EveryBlock publish information from the transfer list shortly thereafter.
