    One thing about the 600 block of W. Diversey hasn't changed in 64 years and isn't likely to anytime soon. Hanig's Slipper Box, a shoe store on the corner of Clark and Diversey, opened in 1944. Peter Hanig started working at the store when he was 11, and has operated it for more than 20 years. One of Hanig's employees has been with the store for 46 years-he guessed. The general manager has been around for 28 years. Friendships develop, and generations of customers return.

Ray Hoffmann, one of two partners in the floral shop, said the move was necessary because of declining foot traffic and rising rent. Hoffman said he noticed foot traffic declining on the block about eight years ago. That forced Aly's to find an alternative to the hand-tied bouquets-with fresh flowers straight from Amsterdam-that were the bulwark of the business.
