Thirty years ago, I was in 3rd grade on the South Side. Most of my classmates were black. The graduating 8thgrade class was white. It was a stark reminder of the rapidly changing Auburn Gresham neighborhood where I live and spent most of my childhood.

Study finds CeaseFire successful at stopping violence on city streets
CeaseFire -- the high-profile anti-violence program that was hit with a major cut last year in its state funding -- is successful at stopping shootings in Chicago, a Northwestern University study has found.The study focused on shootings in seven areas of Chicago where CeaseFire has operated -- Logan Square, Rogers Park, the Southwest Side, West Garfield Park, West Humboldt Park, Englewood and Auburn-Gresham. Six of the seven areas of the city studied grew "noticeably safer," the study concluded. The only exception was Logan Square.
