  • Five things to do today - Sept 4

    Posted in Around Town by Scott Smith on September 4th, 2008

    Here’s what I don’t get about the RNC last night: If community organizers are so terrible, why does Sarah Palin trumpet her time in the PTA?

    Five things to do today:

    ART & DESIGN - LovelySoReal: Auction Preview
    Get a sneak peek at the artworks and other items up for auction at the Renaissance Society’s annual benefit gala. 5–8pm. Merchandise Mart, 222 Merchandise Mart Plaza between Wells and Orleans Sts (773-702-8670, renaissancesociety.org). El: Brown, Purple (rush hrs) to Merchandise Mart. Bus: 11 Lincoln, 125 Water Tower Exp. FREE!

    CLUBS - Campari’s Art of Cocktailing
    Highlighting the vintage silkscreen art of David Weidman and featuring complimentary Campari drinks can’t be a bad thing in our book. Partiers even get some silk screened canvas tote bags if they get there earlier. Actually, they’ll silkscreen anything you want. No, not the cat. 7pm. rodan, 1530 N Milwaukee Ave. (773-276-7036, rodan.ws). El: Blue to Damen. Bus: 50, 56, 72. FREE!

    GAY & LESBIAN - Formerly Known As
    Cheers to the diversity of queers that partake in this monthly mega-inclusive dance party. 9pm. Big Chicks, 5024 N Sheridan Rd between Argyle St and Carmen Ave (773-728-5511). El: Red to Argyle. Bus: 92 Foster, 151 Sheridan (24hrs).

    MUSIC -Equalizer: Allá + Demilos + Bicycle Tricycle
    The progressive indie-focused monthly from Seattle’s KEXP continues. Tonight, local Chicano rock act Allá headlines with its infectious pastiche of krautrock and psychedelic pop. DJs Johnny Kesh and Mikey Dance Panther spin. Hear Allá unplugged, live from our office, on TOC’s podcast, "The Infinite Loop."  8pm. darkroom, 2210 W Chicago Ave, at Leavitt St, Ukrainian Village/West Town, Chicago (773-276-1411) $7.

    SPORTS & REC - El Clásico Bud Light
    When you’ve been battling it out on the pitch since 1943, sometimes it’s good to take the show on the road. And thanks to that Belgium/American beer giant Bud, we can catch the latest chapter of this storied rivalry at Toyota Park. Be there when the two Mexican stalwarts, Club America and Chivas Guadalajara, turn Bridgeview into Little Mexico tonight. 8pm. Toyota Park, 7000 S Harlem Ave at 70th St, Bridgeview (312-559-1212, ticketmaster.com, chicago.fire.mlsnet.com). El: Orange to Midway, then Pace 386. $33–$153.

      Andrew Bird was last night. “Wait, Wait…” is tonight.

      {Editor’s note: You’re totally right. Had the wrong Music blurb in there. My apologies.}
