Lamar Cooper, 37, was charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of Chicago Police Officer Nathaniel Taylor Jr.
Bond was denied Tuesday for a 37-year-old man charged with fatally shooting a veteran Chicago Police officer who was attempting to execute a search warrant during a narcotics bust on the Southeast Side on Sunday.
Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois ordered Lamar Cooper held without bail and scheduled a preliminary hearing for Oct. 24, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said.
Cooper is charged with one count each of first-degree murder and possession of a controlled substance, and three counts of being an armed habitual criminal, according to police News Affairs.
An autopsy Monday determined Officer Nathaniel Taylor Jr., 39, died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. Taylor was shot three times -- in the head, chest and arm, a police source said.
Taylor, known by friends as "Nate," was pronounced dead at 6:02 p.m. Sunday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the medical examiner's office.
He and three other officers were conducting surveillance and waiting to execute a warrant in the 7900 block of South Clyde Avenue when the suspect pulled up in a car about 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Noticing the officers, the suspect opened fire while holding two packets in his mouth, another police source said.
Cooper, who was shot by officers, remains in "stable" condition Tuesday at Stroger Hospital of Cook County and did not attend the bond hearing.
He was convicted of attempted murder for shooting at a South Chicago District officer on July 11, 1990 near the intersection of 79th and Paxton. He served nearly three years behind bars for the 1990 shooting and more recently, Cooper served almost two years for burglary, completing his parole in December.
Taylor was a well-liked, respected 14-year veteran of the force, and a married father of a young daughter.
Calumet Area detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority are investigating.
