South Side High School Evacuated Because Of Fire
CHICAGO (STNG) ―
A South Side high school had to be evacuated Tuesday morning when some wrestling mats in a locker room caught fire. The fire was quickly extinguished, but some students have been sent home for the day.
The fire occurred about 10 a.m. at Englewood High School, 6201 S. Stewart Ave. The building is home to Urban Prep and Team Englewood, according to Chicago Public Schools spokesman Malon Edwards.
Students at both schools were evacuated to the nearby Antioch Baptist Church at 415 W. Englewood Ave., Edwards said.
The fire was contained to a locker room, where wrestling mats caught fire, Edwards said.
The small fire was extinguished by about 10:15 a.m., according to Fire Media Affairs Assistant Director Eve Rodriguez, who said no one was injured or required medical attention. A Level I HazMat response was called and secured, she said.
By about 12:20 p.m., students from Team Englewood have gotten the OK to return to class and have resumed their school day, Edwards said.
Students at Urban Prep have been released for the day and their parents have been notified to pick them up, he said.
