Chicago, IL.
--
A South Side high school had to be evacuated Tuesday morning when some wrestling mats in a locker room caught fire. The fire was quickly extinguished, but school officials were awaiting word from firefighters that it was safe for students to return. The fire occurred about 10 a.m. at Englewood High School, 6201 S. Stewart Ave. The building is home to two schools, Urban Prep and Team Englewood, according to Chicago Public Schools spokesman Malon Edwards. Students at both schools were evacuated to the nearby Antioch Baptist Church at 415 W. Englewood Ave., Edwards said. The fire was contained to a locker room, where some wrestling mats caught fire, Edwards said. The small fire was extinguished by about 10:15 a.m., according to Fire Media Affairs Assistant Director Eve Rodriguez, who said no one was injured or required medical attention. A Level I HazMat response was called and secured, she said. The students were still at the church as of about 11:30 a.m., Edwards said, waiting to get an OK to return to school from the fire department. "We're pretty much waiting for the fire department to assess the situation and damage." |
