Chicago, IL.  --

A 19-year-old man who was apprehended by police a short time after he shot a woman he demanded money from on a South Side street early Monday is expected to appear in court Tuesday.

Darryl Harris is scheduled to appear for a bond hearing sometime Tuesday at Branch 38-2, 727 E. 111th St., according to police News Affairs.

Just before 1 a.m. Monday, a 43-year-old woman was walking on the sidewalk on the 800 block of East 87th Street, when Harris, armed with a handgun, approached her on foot and demanded money, according to a release from police News Affairs. When she said she didn't have any money, Harris shot her once in the leg, then removed a cigarette from her hand, before fleeing the scene.

Gresham District officers immediately got to the scene, aided the victim and broadcast a description of the shooter. Other officers toured the area and saw Harris a short distance away, wearing the exact clothing described by the victim. After Officers Sanchez and Juarez announced to Harris they were the police, he took off and a brief foot chase ensued.

Within moments, Harris was contained in a stairwell on the 8600 block of South Ingleside, the release said. With the help of the other assisting officers, Harris was captured while still in possession of a 9mm handgun. Harris was positively identified by the victim and he was taken to Calumet Area headquarters, where he was charged.

The victim was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where her condition was stable.

Harris, of the 8100 block of South Calumet Avenue, was charged with one count of armed robbery with a firearm, possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest and a firearms registration violation.
