Uptown Beating Called Self-Defense, Suspect Freed
CHICAGO (STNG) ―
Police have released a man accused of severely beating another man early Tuesday in an Uptown neighborhood alley, saying he acted in self-defense.
Two men, who knew each other, began fighting about 12:10 a.m. in an alley at 4940 N. Winthrop Ave., according to Lincoln District police Sgt. Rapa.
After the fight, the injured man went home but later lost consciousness and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition with "extremely severe" injuries, the sergeant said.
The two were unarmed and used their hands and feet in the fight, according to Rapa, who did not know why they were in the alley.
There was a witness to the incident, and police knew who to arrest because the victim apparently told officers who was responsible.
Preliminary investigation revealed the victim was the one who began the fight and the accused man was only defending himself, according to Lincoln District police.
The man was released from custody Tuesday and no charges will be filed, police said.
