Cop Dies In Police-Involved Shooting

Suspect Remains In Very Critical Condition

CHICAGO (CBS) ― A Chicago Police officer is dead and a suspect remains in critical condition Sunday after being shot as police attempted to execute a search warrant on the Southeast Side, as CBS 2's Pamela Jones reports.

Police confirm that officer Nathaniel Taylor Jr.,39, was pronounced dead at 6:02 p.m.

The 14-year veteran was among those in the narcotics and gang intelligence unit executing a seach warrant at a house near the 7900 block of South Clyde Avenue, at about 5:30 a.m., according to police News Affairs.

Taylor was with three others when the suspect pulled up in a car. Police say the man opened fire and officers fired back, wounding the suspect.

Authorities say the officer was shot in the head, chest, and arm and taken to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn in critical condition Sunday morning.

After the shooting, officers searched the home finding six surveillance cameras, weapons, drugs, and a bullet-proof vest.

Officers also searched a maroon SUV parked near the home. Police said a weapon was recovered at the scene.

The incident stunned all those who know the officer.

Police sources said the wounded officer is a very "well liked, stand-up guy," who went out of his way to give advice and self-defense tips to fellow officers.

"You know it's hard to talk about him, because he's always in my heart," said Detective Ron Lewis.

The suspect was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County and is listed in "very critical condition," a spokesman for the hospital said.

A friend of the suspect told CBS 2's Suzanne Le Mignot, the 37-year-old is not a drug dealer. The friend did not want to be identified.

"It's just sad. He's going to be labeled as the bad guy -- like we'd all be labeled as a bad guy," he said.

But police say the man does have a criminal record, which includes a conviction for attempted murder.

Taylor is survived by his wife and child. The Chicago Police Department's prayers and support remain with family, friends and fellow police officers. The family is requesting privacy, per a statement by the department.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the incident.
