Gary Murderer's Escape From Jail Fails
Arrest

Pendleton, Ind.  --  The superintendent of a maximum-security state prison in southern Indiana says guards caught a convicted murderer from Gary attempting to escape by scaling a prison wall.

Pendleton Correctional Facility Superintendent Brett Mize said Larry R. Fleming, 44, formerly of the Black Oak, was discovered outside a housing unit early Friday attempting to climb the building. Guards were alerted about 4:30 a.m. when Fleming was discovered to be missing from his cell.

Fleming is serving a 60-year sentence for murder in Hammond and is not scheduled to be released until 2023.

Fleming will face prison disciplinary charges. The Indiana State Police and the Madison County prosecutor's office will investigate possible criminal charges.

Fleming was sentenced to 60 years in prison in 1990 by Lake Superior Court Judge James Letsinger. Then 26, Fleming was found guilty of killing Dwayne M. Henderson, 22, of East Chicago, during a holdup May 3, 1989, at the Amoco gas station at 6906 Columbia Ave., Hammond.
