Recently, the oldest child and I talked about his difficulties with authority. To keep his mother in the loop, I told her. She was glad to have a discussion. When she later called my husband, I happened to cough in the background. She thought I was trying to get him off the phone and became enraged. She went from polite to potty-mouth instantly!
