Some observers say D2’s asking price is a stretch, especially considering all THE? other rental developments under way in the neighborhood. The developer is seeking $181 a square foot for the lot, slightly less than the $184 a square foot Virginia-based AvalonBay Communities Inc. paid for another apartment development site on the same block last August. But D2’s price comes out to about $33,000 a unit, vs. $23,000 a unit for the AvalonBay site at the southwest corner of Clark and Polk streets.

About 11 a.m. Monday, Dorothy Brown Taylor left the South Shore apartment she shared with her boyfriend to walk her poodle, Frisky, around the neighborhood. On Tuesday, investigators were still searching for clues in the slaying of Taylor, 71. She was strangled, according to an autopsy. Both she and the dog had been beaten.
