Chicago's Community Development Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to recommend sale of a parcel of city-owned land at 16th and State to Columbia College, which plans to build their Media Production Center on the site, according to a statement from the college. The $21 million, 38,000 square-foot building would be the first the South Loop college ever built. Columbia hopes to start construction on the building by winter 2009.

Lucian Meeks, 17, of 4300 W. Adams, has been charged with one count of aggravated battery for his role in a melee that occurred outside of Crane High School on March 7. Meeks allegedly used a blunt object to strike 15 year old during the incident, which left one student dead from a gunshot and resulted in hundreds of students skipping classes subsequent to the event, fearing retaliation and continued violence.

A robbery occurred on the 2100 block of W. Chicago at 2 a.m. on June 8, police reports say. According to the victim, a 38-year-old banker, he was leaving a bar when three men approached him and threatened to beat him up if he didn't hand over his credit cards. The men walked the victim to a nearby ATM and forced him to withdraw $500 from his account, the report says. They then fled the scene with the cash and four of the victim's credit cards. At the time of the report, no arrests had been made.

A robbery occurred on the 1300 block of W. Ohio at 11:50 p.m. on June 7, police reports say. The victims, a man and a woman who own a business together, were walking on the street when a man who appeared to be in his twenties came up from behind and flashed a handgun at them, the report says.

A robbery occurred on the 1600 block of W. Division at 2:35 a.m. on June 7, police reports say. The victim, a 63-year-old man, was leaving a liquor store when he was approached by a known panhandler, the report says. "Gimme a dollar," the panhandler demanded. The victim refused, but the panhandler reached into his pockets and removed about $40 in cash. He then ran from the scene, the report says. At the time of the report, police had not yet made any arrests.

A shooting occurred on the 900 block of N. Francisco at 7:47 p.m. on June 5, police reports say. According to a witness, the shooters were circling the block in their car just before the shooting, telling people on the street they were looking for someone. The victim, a 19-year-old filmmaker, who apparently realized that he was their target, quickly tried to scatter the local kids from the area.

Giving smokers an even worse name
A man was robbed while waiting for the bus on the 4400 block of N. Western Ave. on June 8 at 4:15 a.m. According to police reports, the offender, described as being about 18, asked the 40-year-old victim for a cigarette, and when he didn't have any the offender grabbed $25 out of the victim's pocket and punched him in the eye.
