Fire broke out in an apartment building on the 5400 block of North Winthrop around 12:25 a.m. May 1. A witness told police that her 41-year-old neighbor had a female guest in his apartment who she believes to be a prostitute. The man asked for the witness's help in removing his guest. As the woman was leaving the apartment, she told the witness that the victim "didn't pay me so I started the fire." The woman left the building in an unknown direction. A 13-year-old boy was treated for a cut to his hand and minor smoke inhalation. The witness told police the woman had a red streak in her hair.
