Female robber hits Loop bank
A woman robbed a bank in the Loop after passing a threatening a note to a teller Friday morning, police said. The woman, described as Hispanic, about 30 years old, around 5 feet tall and about 130 pounds, robbed the TCF Bank branch at 29 E. Madison St., authorities said.

A 35-year-old man was shot and killed Thursday night in Chicago's Belmont-Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side. The shooting happened about 9:25 p.m. in the 5000 block of West Wolfram Street, authorities said Friday morning.

1 unaccounted for in West Side home explosion
The explosion occurred at about 3:15 a.m. in the attic of the home in the 2900 block of West 25th Street, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. A woman who lives in the attic was not immediately located, Langford added. Firefighters found no body.

Killed was Martin Campos, 35, of the 3100 block of North Francisco Avenue, according to a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at 9:58 p.m. in Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Fights disrupt anti-violence rally at Southeast Side high school
An anti-violence rally at George Washington High School turned ugly Thursday when a series of fights broke out in a crowd of students being dismissed for the day. Parents and students had gathered at 3 p.m. to protest what they said has been escalating violence between black and Latino students at the school, at 3535 E. 114th St. on the Far Southeast Side.

For the last three years at Chicago's Swift Elementary, a "literacy coach'' has been pushing a writing program developed by national writing guru Lucy Calkins that has kids writing in every subject. This year, many CPS schools are being encouraged to use the Calkins approach, which exposes students to multiple examples of different kinds of writing -- such as memoirs, editorials, persuasive essays -- before asking them to try their own versions.

Details were sketchy about the crash, but at 4:41 p.m., police and paramedics were summoned to the 3900 block of North Ashland -- at Byron -- where the vehicle struck the two women apparently walking on Byron, according to Police and Fire department reports.
