    Under Garcia's most recent order of protection, Casanova, 32, was barred from visiting Yates Elementary, the school the children -- ages, 6, 7 and 11 -- attended. But that's where police believe Casanova, who has not been named a suspect, picked them up after classes Friday. A source said he may have headed to Mexico.

    Developer Krzysztof Karbowski might have some competition in becoming Bucktown and Wicker Park's first hotelier. Jon Goldman, a principal with CG Development Group, said this week that he's mulling the possibility of opening a small hotel at the site of his current office at 1753 N. Damen. He said the location has 12,000-plus square feet and would be an amenable site for a hotel.

    A battery occurred on the 2700 block of W. Haddon at 11:41 p.m. April 16, police reports say. According to the victim, a 23-year-old man, he was standing on the sidewalk when a stranger in a white shirt approached him and bashed him over the head with a glass beer bottle, the report says. At the time of the report, no arrests had been made.

  • 728 W. Grand Not so funky, kind of violent Buddha

    A battery occurred outside the Funky Buddha Lounge, 728 W. Grand, at 3 a.m. April 13, police reports say. According to police reports, the victim, a 32-year-old banker, had gotten into a brief scuffle with a man about his age inside the club, regarding the banker's wife. As the victim was leaving the club, the other man ran up to him and yelled, "Hey man! Come over here." He then swung his arm toward the victim's stomach and ran away. The victim told police he didn't realize he'd been stabbed until a few minutes later, when he looked down and saw blood on his shirt. He was then driven to Rush Hospital, where doctors pronounced him in serious condition after investigating the stab wound, which had penetrated under the left side of his rib cage. At the time of the report, no arrests had been made.

    A robbery occurred on the 2200 block of W. Augusta at 2 a.m. April 19, police reports say. The victim, a 32-year-old musician, was walking near his home when a young man holding a blue steel handgun ran up to him. "Gimme the bag," the gunman demanded. A second offender demanded he turn over his cell phone. The victim ran away after turning over his handbag, calling police from a nearby alley. The muggers made off with his bag, along with about $100 of music books inside and his social security card and passport. At the time of the report, no arrests had been made.

    An armed robbery occurred on the 2100 block of W. Armitage at 12:38 p.m. April 20, police reports say. The victim told police he was unloading groceries in his garage when two young men surprised him, sticking what appeared to be a gun into the back of his head. A second man showed him a handgun, the report says. "Give me your wallet," the men demanded. The victim turned it over, and the intruders then instructed him to lie down and face away while they made their escape. The robbers made off on foot with about $40 in cash. At the time of the report, no arrests had been made.

    A robbery occurred on the 2700 block of N. St. Louis at 6:44 p.m. April 17, police reports say. The victim, a 24-year-old man, was walking down the street when three men came up behind him and surrounded him. "Give me your phone, motherf---er!" one of the men yelled. In a moment, one of the offenders had the victim in a chokehold. A second man came up behind the victim and struck him in the ribs, while the third man punched him in the face, according to the report. The victim turned over about $20 in cash and his cell phone and the offenders fled on foot. At the time of the report, no arrests had been made.

    An aggravated battery occurred on the 3300 block of W. Potomac at 4 p.m. April 20, police reports say. The victim was helping his cousin move when several young men attacked him, the report says. The victim tried to evade his attackers, but couldn't escape. One man reportedly stabbed him twice, once on the right side of his back and once in the back of the head. The offenders then fled in an unknown direction. At the time of the report, no arrests had been made. The victim's wounds, though serious, did not threaten his life.

  • 700 block of N. Troy Not so funky, kind of violent Buddha

    A swirling brawl, involving a large group of young women, broke out on the 700 block of Troy at around 6:25 p.m. April 15, police reports say. Debra Shinaul, 18, of the 700 block of N. Troy, and a 17-year-old of the 4000 block of N. Grenshaw, were arrested after the fight. The 17-year-old's name was redacted from reports because she is a minor. According to the report, several young women were beating on one another with "shovels, sticks and fingernails" when police arrived. Four women, ranging in age from 13 to 39, were listed as victims. Few other details were available at the time of the report.

    Given the neighborhood in question (and the street in particular), some readers may suggest that the price needs to drop a little more to make this unit appealing, and they may be right. The closest one-bedroom conversions I could find in West Town were the two at 1310 W Ohio St that Mark wrote about a couple weeks ago. Those are listed from the $230s to the $240s, with estimated assessments almost identical to those at Walton Street.

  • 11th Street and Michigan Avenue Woman allegedly dragged by CTA bus

    CTA spokeswoman Sheila Gregory said a northbound bus did make contact with a person that resulted in injury about 8:41 a.m. at 11th Street and Michigan Avenue. The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Gregory said. Bernier underwent surgery late Thursday.

    According to police reports, on April 19 at 6:30 p.m., while waiting for his order from a McDonald's located at 144 S. Wabash, Ray Burgess, 40, of Detroit, allegedly became extremely upset and jumped over the counter with his fists clenched. The store manager said she grabbed a phone and called police, at which time Burgess jumped back over the other side of the counter. Police arrived, and placed Burgess into custody and charged him with assault.

    According to police reports, on April 20 at 1:50 a.m., a Yellow Cab driver alleged that a man staying in the Hotel Monaco, 225 N. Wabash, fled into the hotel without paying his fare. Police identified the man, went up to his hotel room where they found him wearing a full-length bathrobe. The officers obtained the fare for the taxi driver.

    According to police reports, on April 17 at 9:45 a.m., a wine salesperson reported that she parked her vehicle in a lot near 118 N. Jefferson on April 16. The vehicle contained two temperature-controlled wine carts valued at $120 each which contained ten bottles of wine valued at $300. When she returned to her car the next morning, an unknown offender had broken her driver's side rear window and removed the wine and wine carts.

    According to police reports, on April 2 at 12:15 p.m., a policeman patrolling the lakefront near 101 S. Lake Shore Dr. on horseback encountered a pedestrian, who allegedly stuck his hand into the police horse's mouth. The horse closed his mouth, causing a minor bite to the victim's thumb. The victim refused medical treatment.

He was asked to leave by construction workers, but refused and started to fight with the workers. He then tried to run further into the site, at which time security tried to stop him. Davis allegedly punched and kicked the security guard. Davis was charged with battery and criminal trespassing.

    According to police reports, on April 18 at 9:15 p.m., police on routine patrol noticed a 50-year-old Chicago man loitering in a dock area at 70 E. Lower Wacker Dr. Police stopped to conduct a field interview, and the man ran away. After a brief foot chase, officers stopped the man and asked him for ID. While reaching into his back pocket, an ID belonging to another man along with a zip lock bag containing a white powdery substance suspected as heroin fell to the ground. Police retrieved both items for inventory and placed the man into custody. He was transported to the 1st District police station for processing.

    A 20-year-old woman was injured by a male assailant described as being in his early 20s as she was taking out her trash around 2 a.m. April 13. The victim said that the man came from the courtyard of her building on the 1900 block of West Ainslie and grabbed her left arm, scraping her right arm with a five-inch switchblade. The victim struggled to get free and managed to get back inside her residence.

    While shopping at a small retail store on the 5200 block of North Broadway, a 68-year-old woman said that a woman of unknown age who was wearing a multi-colored jacket swiped $200 from her pocket as she left the store. The thief was last seen fleeing northbound on Broadway.

    A man described in his early 20s was spotted loading power tools into a Ford SUV with blue headlights from a garage on the 5800 block of North Campbell around 1 a.m. April 16. A witness observed the man standing by the side door of a garage and driving off in the SUV from the rear of the garage. Both the witness and the homeowner found the side service door open and numerous power tools stolen.

    According to police reports, a new bride left her wedding ring, valued at $25,000, on a table as she and a bride's maid went into a bathroom at 4 p.m., April 19, in a church in the 1600 block of N. Cleveland. Several people told police that a homeless man was observed in the room with the table where the victim left her ring. The suspect told police that he always comes into the church to use the bathroom. A witness told police that he saw the suspect exit the room before the victim entered.

  • 300 block of W. Elm Teen Shot in Seward Park

    A teenager was shot after a brawl shortly before 4 p.m., April 16, in Seward Park in the 300 block of W. Elm, according to police reports. Police observed a large crowd of teenagers running from the park where shots rang out, and the victim fell to the ground, calling out "I've been shot!" Officers observed saw blood on the victim's jeans, just above his right knee. The victim was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and treated in the trauma room. The victim was in stable condition and alert at all times.

    We're talking about Asian Longhorned Beetles, one of the most invasive insect species that descended upon the Ravenswood neighborhood not unlike a plague of locusts. More than 1,300 trees were removed that summer due to the beetle. Grieving residents of all ages wrote poems, created pictures and held services mourning the demise of Ravenswood's trees.
