Stroger, Sawyer changed face of Chicago politics
Former Cook County Board President John Stroger died Friday, nearly two years after suffering a stroke during a reelection campaign. Stroger was 79 at the time of his death. His funeral was Wednesday at St. Felicitas Church, 1526 E. 84th St., and was attended by friends, family and elected officials from Chicago and around the state.

He lived in a home on the 3600 Block of King Drive, once owned by Dr. Roger Williams, one of Bronzeville's most prominent African-American doctors during the neighborhood's golden age. He told Bishop he was going to throw away the papers stored in the home. Bishop decided to save them.

Stubborn Fire Strikes Far South Side House
The fire broke in the 4 a.m. hour in the 2 1/2 story frame house at 10020 S. Aberdeen St. No one was reported injured and everyone reportedly escaped safely, but firefighters encountered extreme difficulty in battling the blaze.

One of the most ambitious establishments is Frontera Grill, 445 N. Clark St. The River North restaurant owned by celebrity chef Rick Bayless sends two tons of food waste to the Resource Center each week and soon plans to sell 735 pounds of used cooking oil a week for conversion to biofuel, Frontera chef Brian Enyart said.

Kirsten Esterly, general manager at Medici on 57th, 1327 E. 57th, said her restaurant in Hyde Park is unusual in that it sends coffee grinds to compost and pays the non-profit Resource Center on the South Side to recycle its glass, plastic and cardboard.

The Smoke-Free Illinois Act went into effect on New Year's Day and the new law prohibits smoking in public places including bars and restaurants and even private clubs. Chicago, once one of America's cigar-friendly cities, has finally joined New York City and Los Angeles in the clean air crusade. The Cigar Stop, a newer addition to West Town tucked away on 527 N. Ashland, is one of the shrinking number of establishments that still cater to cigar smokers.
