  • Things to do this weekend: Jan 18 - 20

Posted in Around Town by Scott Smith on January 18th, 2008

The gentleman in this week’s Shoot Out photo from digitalalley in the TOC Flickr Photo Group has the right idea: grab a scarf, and find yourself a bar with a fireplace for the weekend that serves cheap beer. Although I might recommend you stick with whiskey and its gloriously warming properties instead. Click here to find bars and restaurants in the city with fireplaces.

If you’d rather stay inside, this week’s cover story tells you how to bring theater, music, booze and more to your house so you can stay toasty.

Here are some things to do this weekend if you chose to venture out of the house.

    FRIDAY

AROUND TOWN - Save our African-American Treasures
This year, the library’s Martin Luther King Day celebration gets a little help from the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. The result is a daylong program of lectures, talks and activities that aim to help the public preserve historically valuable African-American items they may house. Attend a workshop to learn how to preserve family stories, garments, documents and more with conservation specialists; or bring in up to three of your own treasures for historical review. Reservations are required. 9:30am–4:30pm. Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S State St at Van Buren St (312-747-4300, R.S.V.P. at nmaahcrsvp.si.edu or call 312-747-8194). El: Orange, Brown, Pink, Purple (rush hrs) to Library; Red, Blue to Jackson. Metra: Elec Main to Van Buren St. FREE!

    COMEDY - Bodyslam!
The Rise and Fall of CAWC . Pro wrestling! Hell yeah! And comedy? We’d say it’s a match made in heaven, if the very nature of the WWE weren’t already comedic in and of itself. 10pm. Annoyance Theatre, 4830 N Broadway between Lawrence Ave and Ainslie St (773-561-4665). El: Red to Lawrence. Bus: 36 Broadway, 81 Lawrence (24hrs). $15

FILM - Note by Note at the Siskel
The Siskel has been scoring some great docs on unlikely topics (Helvetica, anyone?) and they’ve done it again with Note by Note, which follows the construction of a single Steinway grand piano, with the bonus of some famous musicians discussing how they choose a piano. We know, it doesn’t sound exactly riveting, but trust us on this one. 7:45pm. Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N State St at Randolph St (312-846-2600). El: Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple (rush hrs) to State/Lake; Red to Lake; Blue to Clark/Lake. $9, students $7, members $5. Through Sunday.

MUSIC - The Greyboy Allstars at House of Blues
Acid jazz pioneers the Greyboy Allstars didn’t release an album between 1997 and 2007, but last year’s What Happened to Television? show the San Diego group’s chops have far from dried up. 9pm. House of Blues, 329 N Dearborn St. (312-923-2000, hob.com/chicago). El: Red to Grand. Bus: 29, 36, 62. $26.50–$28. 18+.

SHOPPING & STYLE - Macy’s Flea Market clearance event
Don’t start circling just yet, buzzards. This ain’t a yard sale. It’s a flea market. The department store concludes its European market with a three-day sale, when everything is marked 35–75% off the original price. Find amazing goods from jewelry and luggage to furniture and framed art. 10am–8pm. 111 N State St at Washington St (312-781-1000). El: Red to Lake; Blue to Washington; Brown, Orange, Purple (rush hrs) to State/Lake. Bus: 2, 29, 151 (24hrs). Through Saturday.

SPAS, HEALTH AND FITNESS - Pretty poor
We know you’re wiped out this month after paying off those credit card bills, but that doesn’t mean you have to neglect your body. Eshe is having a special $45 event through the end of January, so you can still look pretty—even if your wallet isn’t. Get a 30 minute facial (normally $65), a 40-minute Sweedish massage (normally $70) or a Peppermint Patty pedicure (normally $60)—for $45 each. Eshe Day Spa and Salon, 8 S Michigan Ave between Madison and Monroe Sts (312-629-0376, eshedayspa.com). Metra: Elec to Millennium Station. El: Green, Brown, Orange, Purple (rush hrs) to Madison. Bus: 3, 4, 6, 14, 147, 151 (24hrs). Through Jan 31.

THEATER - Songs for a New World
BoHo Theatre’s soaring production of Jason Robert Brown’s song cycle was a big hit last fall at the Heartland Studio Theatre, the company’s tiny Rogers Park home. It returns for an extended run in a very different space at the Theatre Building. 8pm. Bohemian Theatre Ensemble at Theatre Building Chicago, 1225 W Belmont Ave between Racine and Lakewood Aves (773-327-5252). El: Red, Brown, Purple (rush hrs) to Belmont. Bus: 9 Ashland (24hrs), 77 Belmont (24hrs). $24.

    SATURDAY

AROUND TOWN - Project Runway Reception
The Logan Square boutique teams up with Spanish wine promoters for this Vibrant Rioja Nights event. Appearing fresh off the catwalk is Project Runway model Amanda Alter, as well as the show’s Chicago-based designer, Steven Rosengard. In addition to wine tastings and cheese samples, guests also will be the first to see an original dress designed by Rosenbard, which will be modeled by Alter and then auctioned off to one lucky winner on Tue 22. Wolfbait & B-Girls Boutique, 3131 W Logan Blvd at Milwaukee Ave (312-698-8685). El: Blue to Logan Square. Bus: 52, 56, 76. FREE!

FILM - Once at Doc Films
What’s that? You STILL haven’t seen Once? Seriously, we raved about it over the summer, we left you a text message about it, we snuck into your house and wrote it onto your calendar, and you ignored us. Well fine. Go see this lovely film without us. 7, 9, 11pm. Doc Films, University of Chicago, 1212 E 59th St between Kimbark and Woodlawn Aves (773-702-8574). Metra: Elec Main to 59th St. Bus: 4 (24hrs), X4, 14, 28, 59, 171. $4.

    SPORTS - Indoor Triathlon
Don’t let the winter weather stop your tri training. This race consists of a ten-minute swim, 20-minute stationary bike ride and 15-minute treadmill run. The first wave begins at 8am and the last at 2:30pm. Proceeds from this event will go toward a scholarship fund for special-needs high-school students. All who enter will nab a free goodie bag and T-shirt. 8am. Fitness Formula Clubs: Oak Park, 1114 Lake St, Oak Park (708-383-1114). El: Green to Harlem. $50, two triathlons $90, three triathlons $115, four triathlons $120.

SPORTS - Chicago Winter Bike Swap
We’ve got a friend around the office here who believes you really shouldn’t be out shopping for new wheels when the weather is nice, as you’re more likely to end up buying the first bike you meet just to get rolling (it’s akin to the “no trips to Paulina Meat Market while stoned” rule we often play by). For followers of this line of thought, we offer the first Chicago Winter Bike Swap, where retailers and regular spoke folks can barter and buy their overrun or long sought-after parts. 9:30am–5pm. Old Orchard Country Club, 700 W Rand Rd, Mount Prospect (847-877-1189, chicagowinterbikeswap.com). $5, kids under 13 free.

    THEATER - Eva Perón
This punk-rock deconstruction of Argentina’s most famous first lady, written in 1970 by queer Argentine expat Copi, rocks the Trap Door with a live score performed by musician Sam Lewis. 8pm. Trap Door Theatre, 1655 W Cortland St between Marshfield Ave and Paulina St (773-384-0494). Bus: 9 Ashland, 73 Armitage. $17.

    SUNDAY

MUSIC - Tomorrow Never Knows: The Walkmen + White Rabbits + White Denim + Arcadias
The Walkmen started out as semi-indie hopefuls, but since their debut they’ve proved themselves beholden to no one’s expectations. Indeed, 2006 saw the release of not just their rootsy third album A Hundred Miles Off, but a track-by-track cover of the Harry Nilsson and John Lennon collaboration Pussy Cats, and for years the group has been threatening to complete its collectively written novel. The group’s fourth original album is slated for spring. Be sure to catch high-energy openers White Rabbits, who got it going on. DJs the Prairie Cartel spin upstairs. 9pm. Schubas, 3159 N Southport Ave. (773-525-2508, schubas.com). El: Red, Brown, Purple (rush hrs) to Belmont. Bus: 9 Ashland (24hrs), 77 Belmont (24hrs). $15, five-day pass $55. 18 and older.

MUSIC - Hideout Country Social: Lawrence Peters Outfit + Blue Line Riders + Tangleweed
The Hideout makes plenty of forays into indie rock and jazz, but tonight it’ll do what it does best: Down-home roots music, and tonight features a crew of the usual suspects. Before the music starts, there will be a 6 PM potluck dinner. Anybody who brings a dish of food (“not just a bag of potato chips,” they specify) will get a discount. After the show, there will be a picking party open to all. 7pm. Hideout, 1354 W Wabansia Ave. (773-227-4433, hideoutchicago.com). Bus: 72 North. $10.

SPORTS - 3rd Coast Challenge Chess Tournament
Does it surprise you to hear that $700 is up for grabs at this tourney? We see it as proof that being a smarty-pants does pay off. Sign up now for this four-rounder (limited to the first 60 players to register) and you could tote home a piece of the pie. 9am. University of Chicago, Quadrangle Club, 1155 E 57th St at University Ave (773-844-0701, renaissanceknights.org). El: Green to Garfield. Bus: 171 U. of C. Hyde Park, 172 U. of C. Kenwood. $25–$35.
