whats all the sirens about?

out pulling weeds in front of my house near rockwell/devon. keep hearing sirens and horns for the last 20min. assume it isn't nato related cuz no helicopters. anyone know what is going on? this is my first time posting. want to try to see if there is more news on here than internet news.

  • One man said that police were saying that it was the HVAC system-- that someone turned on the electrical system and basically created a "Backdraft" situation, spreading fire.

    So very sad.

  • Jeff Teacher

I posted pictures of the fire on my facebook page "Park Castle Condominiums" for anyone who might be interested. It's just devastating. Looking forward to the field house restoration!

Cyclists

I have a general question that maybe someone could answer. Do folks on bicycles have to obey traffic lights and signs as well? I just see a lot of the them flying through intersections without stopping at the stop sign. I've seen some close ones.

Im just curious.

Thanks!

Two more rules for cyclists that are often broken: 1) Cyclists are required to follow the posted speed limit, INCLUDING the new school zone/park limits. 2) Bicyclists are required to have fully functioning lights (front and back) when riding from dusk to dawn.

The city of Chicago could make a mint by patrolling the intersections on Kenmore between Ardmore and Devon and ticketing cyclists who run the stop signs. Very little surprises me about Chicago, but the fact that the city lets this rich source of revenue go untapped for so long truly amazes me.

And do not get me started on the number of cyclists riding on Broadway sidewalks...

I've been bike commuting in Chicago for 17 years. So I have more than a few opinions about this. I, and many other cyclists, operate our bikes the way we operate a car: Following the rules of the road, including stopping, fully, for every stop sign and giving pedestrians the right of way. I am not in the Tour de France, I am merely commuting to and from work, and therefore slowing down, stopping and restarting my pedals doesn't bother me. (I'm just thrilled to not be on a CTA bus or train or stuck in a car.) When I want to ride like the wind without stopping I go to one of the many bike trails in the forest preserves or out in the country away from hectic urban traffic.

It's upsetting that so many other cyclists do not even attempt to slow down much less stop at intersections. These cyclists give the rest of us a bad (hated) reputation. Which is why I support (and desperately want) required, visible licenses on all bicycles used by anyone over the age of 16 in the city. It will force accountability. I will gladly pay a license fee and display a lighted license number on my bikes. (Wanna bet how many thumbs down I get for that?)

  • Lacy your friendly local artist

Great thread. I just wish Chicago could launch a PSA or info campaign that would let everyone know that YES, cyclists must obey rules of the road (and drivers must acknowledge their right to use it)! Drivers and cyclists both need to be educated on this.

im north of howard on paulina and pretty available to show the cars. feel free to email me if interested- also, please feel free to pass along the message to anyone who might be looking. thanks all!!!

Condolences on your losses. But do remember Craigslist is probably a more sales-oriented site to list such things. Not a lot of commerce gets done here. Unless there's a lost cat or dog in one of the cars, or the cars are covered with graffiti that can be covered or removed. . .

  • Carl G. Rogers Park resident

Actually, EB guidelines discourage "for sale" messages (it's clearly stated on their "don't" list). I do see the unusual circumstances here, but it's not hard to understand what this forum would turn into if we all posted items for sale. All this being said, I think EB could very successfully implement a parallel "community classifieds" feature, if it was separate from the discussion forums. Given how hard it is to sell on Craigslist in big cities, I'd be in favor of such a feature.

Edgewater Play Groups?

Hi-am soon going to become a mom and although I have plenty of time to research this, I was just curious how does one go about joining or collaborating with other parents with small children and infants in the area? Are there playgroups or parent groups/organizations in the neighborhood? I would like to hear your suggestions for those parents raising children in the city, and especially here in Edgewater-thanks!

When your child gets a little bit older check out Chicago's park district programs. The Broadway Armory is doing some major renovation and they are adding a ton of great new programs that are extremely affordable. I signed up for their adult yoga class so I could get back into my post baby body. That class has helped me keep my sanity, especially after having my second child.

(The Gill Park swimming program is also awesome). BUT all the programs are not of the same quality AND the online signup is a disaster AND if you then have to wait in line in person to sign up: it will turn you off the entire program!

If you make the effort to talk with other parents while you are watching your kids at park district programs - that informal network of parents provides real-time scuttlebutt on the ins and outs of raising a kid in the city.

Also wiggleworms starts as early as 6 months old and is another great program for the kid, and for the adult to meet other cool parents

Did anyone ride the Metra this weekend?

I'm going to have to ride it tomorrow, and I'm wondering how it was. Did everyone get searched? Did they take a ruler to your bag to make sure it was really 15 x 15? Were there long delays? Or maybe it was an uneventful, none of the above day?

I didn't ride it, but a friend of mine was searched on Saturday before she could board Metra. However, she was on the train coming in from the south that goes right under McCormick Place, so that probably makes a difference.

Korea Town on Bryn Mawr: Living, dying or dead?

All the empty storefronts on Bryn Mawr west of the river makes me question whether the area is Korea Town in name only. A sign of the economic depression or of the pace of the exodus of Korean-Americans from the City to the suburbs? When the area comes back, will it have a Korean-American profile or will it be something new? I think the City's the richer for the strong presence of Korean-Americans here.

Lawrence Ave through Albany Park (formerly known as honorary Seoul Blvd. Not sure if that's still the case or not.) used to be solidly Korean up through the mid nineties and there isn't even a Korean market left in that area anymore. I sorely miss the Clark Market that used to be on Kedzie just north of Lawrence. They had wonderful take-out of fresh-made snacks and salads and a great fish counter. It's now a very, very good Middle-Eastern grocery store but I still miss the Korean food.

Its rare, but it has happened.

If you park from 7 pm to midnight, you sometimes will have to move your car by 9am the following day, or you will get ticketed.

If you park before 5pm, you should be fine……..You will get parking within 4 blocks of your crib…

Sunday could be tougher before 5pm…………
You may have to park further.

Try not to use the car on Sunday, okay?

When you first start using your car around here, you really gotta be sharp……..It don't hurt to be a lil bit paranoid even………Really check those signs out…They could be behind you 100 feet or more……Look for hidden hydrants.

    Okay, good luck.

  • Oh, another thing, i forgot…

I brought my car from North Carolina also…

Listen, you gotta have 2 license plates, not 1……OMG.

Once you buy those plates at the DMV,
you gotta place BOTH on the car right away!

And the sticker on the passenger front windshield!

    They will get you fast………

OMG, watch out for this … They don't play….

You are looking at 270 bucks total on these transfers…

But im only payin $28 a month insurance, thank god..

We are doing some garden-keeping and find ourselves with a lot of great plants that we no longer have space for. Bearded iris, ground covers etc. If you're interested, send me a message asap!

Ok, there's not a ton, so it's probably best for individual gardens. That said, we will be home around 4, bring your own shovel and containers. These are not shade plants, mostly full to mixed sun choices so the shade gardener likely won't find anything worthwhile. Corner of Jarvis and Ashland.

Helen, I love the RPGG idea, but I'm leaving for Springfield and don't have containers to do the donating. I wish I had thought of this sooner!

  • Kelly Cassidy Mom of 3 boys, State Rep of 14th district

Thanks to Paula and Gunn, the bearded iris and some groundcover will soon grace their corner garden at Paulina and Chase. A few assorted plants went into a neglected corner at my intersection, and I used a few small containers to pot some ground cover (about 6 pots) that someone can still have if you're interested.

Outdoor or Missing Kitty?

This little kitty has been coming around our building on the 1200 block of Elmdale for the last 3-4 weeks. Kitty may simply be an outdoor cat, but I thought I'd post here to see if anyone in the neighborhood might be missing this little one. Looks about 4 or 5 lbs., very slight build, blue eyes, affectionate (I think female), with a red collar. I've started feeding/watering her in the last few days (always hungry and thirsty).

She's a 10 y/o Bengal but looks much younger than her age. I'm sorry if she has been pestering you. Both of my cats are indoor/outdoor (they have a pet door that they use). She tends to prowl much more frequently in the warmer weather; I've not seen her all day today since she came home to eat last night (trust me, she eats well at home, she just doesn't put on weight very easily due to stomach issues, so she eats only certain foods). I appreciate you looking after her.

JeffO scrapes, paints Farwell CTA viaduct

Yes folks, JeffO is back, with a vengeance. This afternoon I came across him scraping peeling paint off the Farwell CTA viaduct and painting it.

He said he went the hardware store with a paint chip and matched the color. He had a paint scraper on a long pole, and paint roller on an extension pole. He was working on the middle support columns when I saw him. He even painted the base.

Now, that's taking matters into your own hands!

His son was there helping. When I asked him what he thought about what his dad was doing, he said, "I think he's doing good things for the community."

I couldn't have said it better.

Thank you, JeffO.

Indian Boundary field house on fire in West Rogers Park

Firefighters have responded to a two-alarm fire at Indian Boundary Park field house at 2500 W. Lunt Ave. in West Rogers Park, according to a Sun-Times media wire.

  • was at the park when this all began. the whole second floor was engulfed in flames and those poor firefighters where in there when the second floor collapsed on them!! bad thing is the entire playground is made of wood so hope they can contain it to just the field house. hard to see that going on that field house has been there forever.
sad is all i can say and hope all those firemen come out ok!!

Why I love Rogers Park

This evening I took a stroll through our neighborhood. Maybe it was the gentle late spring evening light which illuminated the leaves on trees beautifully. Maybe it was the man strumming his ukelele on his front porch. Maybe it was the young couple walking their dog or the three grade school kids riding their scooters down the sidewalk while their mothers stood by talking and watching. Or, maybe it was the few measures of a saxophone wafting through the open window or the sound of the trumpet I heard a few doors down the block. But I love Rogers Park.

I feel extremely lucky to live in Chicago. I have been to other great cities...NYC, LA, Boston, San Francisco, Wash. DC, and Toronto for example. Each have many wonderful features of their own, and I have enjoyed my visits to these places immensely. But when it comes down to it, there's no other place on this big, green Earth I want to call home but Chicago. It has its faults, definitely, but when I stack the undesirable features next to what I love and appreciate about Chicago, the pros list soars above the cons. To me, Chicago is the perfect blending of what I want most in a home town: diversity, interesting neighborhoods, a thriving downtown, transportation, culture, (art, music, museums, theater, etc.), entertainment/recreation, vast array of dining options, from almost every conceivable ethnic cuisine to the exquisite to bar fare to sidewalk dining to the funky, ultra-budget-friendly diners to the multitude of cafes, incredible architecture, the extensive parks and beaches system, the abundance of shopping options, the dynamic lakefront, along w/ affordability. And so much more! I enjoy travel a great deal, but wherever I have been, I have always been happy to Chicago at the end of my journey. No one has a crystal ball, but I don't see myself ever living anywhere else. And as for RP, barring some unforeseen circumstance, I hope to grow old here.

  • My family and I moved to RP after thirty years in the near West suburbs two years ago..mostly to try something different and live closer to the lake...but not really expecting to stay. Now i can't imagine living any place else. The neighbors and business owners are so friendly and the environment charged with positive energy, art, music, great restaurants, gardens and greenery. Love it- love the lake front and love it here!

I live right by there and I was walking down the street when I saw a large group of people watching a woman being placed on a gurney and taking into an ambulance. There was lots of blood and beer cans lying around on the sidewalk. When I asked the police what happened they just said someone had been beaten up but didn't know any details. It was obvious that it had just happened within the last few minutes. I asked another bystander and she said that the woman was with another guy and they were walking away from the thorndale el stop and some people asked them for change. Apparently they were then followed and it ended with the woman being stabbed in the neck and the man stabbed in the arm. I am very freaked out and I know how the violence can start once it gets warmer out. But since this is so freakin close to home I just want to know if anyone knows anything else. I am definitely going to move. This incident is too scary for me since it seems "random" and not targeted, like previous gang activity in this area has been. Anyone with information let me know.

Positive loitering is safe and easy. The idea is simple: a group stands or walks around in the problem area at random times on random days. We watch. The point is that people up to no good don't like to be watched. They are also uncomfortable not knowing what's going on or why large groups of people troll "their" neighborhood. Eventually, they are made so uncomfortable that they move on out of the area. The police are aware that we are there. If there is a problem, we call them.

If you would like more information, please message me.

  • Hope we'll get the whole story soon to see if this is random violence or connected with something like gangs or domestic problems. Not good either way -- but the former is scarier to us all. I have seen a cop car at Thorndale Beach just about every hour these last few days, but think it could be connected to NATO since temple is right there. Hopefully Alderman Osterman's work with the police in this ward is keeping them trolling often and catching some of these guys!

RP good news

I got turned around and found myself driving down Lunt today, just east of Ridge. We saw a dad and his little boy, probably about 3 or 4 picking up litter on their street. From New Bike Racks - where did they come from?:
