Boykin proposes gas tax hike to pay for jobs program

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart endorsed the plan, which was announced Monday at a news conference at the offices of the Chicago Urban League, 4510 S. Michigan.

Boykin proposes gas tax hike to pay for jobs program
Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin on Monday proposed hiking the gasoline sales tax to pay for a program to create jobs for teens and young adults in troubled parts of the county with the aim of reducing street violence.
    http://chicago.suntimes.com

  • Tony Adams curmudgeon

The gas tax already _is_ a sin tax. We all need to burn as little fossil fuel as possible. If it takes a tax to encourage us to do the right thing, then so be it. We should most definitely take advantage of the low oil prices to increase gas taxes.

  • billywood 5500s ashland hope&peace

Bring business to bligted areas of the city by making them tax free no income-tax no sales tax and no property tax. It's not like they are generating anything but liability for tax payers already. Duty free zones would put wind in the economic sails of Chicago's sinking neighborhoods.

911 has nothing to do with police overtime they are different entities. But -- I do also know they are forcing most at OEMC to work 12 and 16 hour shifts with forced OT instead of hiring more. Missing their families for weeks. The cost in addition to the financials is everyone there hates their job. And rahm doesn't help the way he pawns the top position at OEMC to outsiders who know nothing as a consolation to not giving them the police superintendent job. So when the call talker at 911 is crabby you know why. This problem isn't new -- even before rahm there were employees there making double their salary, 6 figures, because they took overtime when they could. What has changed under Rahm is it used to be people would CHOOSE overtime whole others with family would not. Now they just have no choice do to severe understaffing and the cuts made by Rahm.
