Actually torta and sandwich are two different things. You are correct about the sandwich; food historians generally attribute the creation of the sandwich to John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich. This Englishman was a gambler and in 1762, during a 24 hour gambling game, he told the cook to prepare his food in such a way that it would not interfere with his game. The cook presented him with sliced meat between two pieces of toast. This meal required no utensils and could be eaten with one hand, leaving the other free to continue the game.

The torta has been prepared in some variation in many parts of the world, it is also known in Spain as bocadillo or bocata and la bala fría in Venezuela. Torta also means "cake" in countries like Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela. The torta has a unique history well described by "Tortologo" Roberto Ayala in his book: "El Gran Libro de las Tortas". According to his findings, the history dates back to the sixteenth century with Leonardo Da Vinci and his guest and protector Ludovico Sforza. Da Vinci wanted to surprise his guest by improvising a snack that consisted of placing hard pieces of meat covering the entire dish between two larger pieces of bread. This could be considered the initial stages of the torta. With the Spaniard bringing wheat during the conquest and the arrival of the French colonizers, the torta took shape in Mexico with the influence of other civilizations.

I also compared Día de los Tamales with the French cuisine. I have tasted their tamales and I find that the masa is bland, dry or mushy, underseasoned, with a mediocre salsa, and overpriced. The shop is nice with decent art, but I prefer the cart lady on 26th st. with questionable sanitation with a great savory tamal at $1.50 each and I don't need to add Luisiana, Sriracha, or any other hot sauce to improve the flavor.

Again, this is my opinion and my own taste buds....
