Zenith Company Began As Literal Radio Shack Next To Edgewater Beach Hotel

After only two years, Chicago Radio Lab had outgrown its lakefront garage and moved west to a 3,000-square-foot factory and office building at 6433 N. Ravenswood Ave., which remains today as the Chicago Industrial Arts & Design Center.

This article has 3 other Chicago locations (Show)

The pair of friends were former Navy men stationed at Lakes Naval Training Station who, after World War I, formed the Chicago Radio Laboratory out of Matthews' Uptown apartment kitchen at 1316 W. Carmen Ave.

Later that year, Chicago Radio Lab expanded into a small shack at 5525 N. Sheridan Road, property owned by the glamorous up-and-coming hotel.

Some of its creations are now on display from 1-4 p.m. weekends at the Edgewater Historical Society, 5358 N. Ashland Ave., until April.

Zenith Company Began As Literal Radio Shack Next To Edgewater Beach Hotel
EDGEWATER - Before Steve Jobs made working out of your garage cool, Ralph H.G. Matthews and Karl Hassel had already made history by helping to transmit the first transcontinental radio message out of a two-car garage on the grounds of the former Edgewater Beach Hotel.

Hopefully opening the first week of June, XO Marshmallow (located at Sheridan and Lunt) will showcase the handmade treats that Connor and Shanks have become famous for, along with some special cafe-only specialities to round out the menu. Think S'mores, hot chocolate and marshmallow cones.

Plan For Rogers Park Target, Apartments On Sheridan Road Advances

The development is slated for a plot of land just north of the Caroline Hedger Apartments at 6418 N. Sheridan Road that is now a parking lot and community center used by the seniors.

The proposal from Three Corners Development, called the "Concord at Sheridan," includes constructing a seven-story building in the 6400 block of North Sheridan Road in Rogers Park with 111 apartment units, underground parking and 6,200 square feet of leasable retail space.

Plan For Rogers Park Target, Apartments On Sheridan Road Advances
ROGERS PARK - The city's Plan Commission approved a controversial proposal from developers to build a seven-story development and Target store on land owned by the Chicago Housing Authority Thursday afternoon. @Pedro Garciano - I thought you were off having a beer and reliving the only high point in the current presidency?

You pretty much accuse me of being a Moore partisan when that is not even close to true. Fact is I am neutral about Moore. I would not mind seeing a new candidate take him on...it would be good for everyone to have another set of opinions.

The problem is, there are a few who are quick to jump on Moore with some wildly unfounded accusations and conclusions. As Daniel Patrick Moynihan once said, "You are entitled to your opinion. But you are not entitled to your own facts.”

You, my friend, want to peddle your own facts which makes me wonder for whom you are shilling!

  • Exactly.
I called 911. I finally asked if they needed to know my blood type.
That was the only question left.

  • Better than to rely on 911 is to be self sufficient. When seconds count, police is minutes away.
And sometimes they show up only to take pictures of you at the crime scene.

Helen NoH - Yes, you are correct. There is sort of a strange contradiction with the evolution of gangs. The hierarchy of "The Mob" used to be the model. It provided control and accountability. There were rules and there were consequences for breaking the rules. But the existence of that sort of hierarchical structure also made it easier for prosecutors to establish the first step in a RICO case - proving the existence of an organization.

So, many gangs abandoned that "top down" structure to make it more difficult to establish the baseline RICO requirement. The problem is, less structure, less control, more "free agents" and less accountability.

An Illinois Street Gang RICO Act was signed into law by Gov. Pat Quinn in 2013. Forty one members of the Black Souls, a West side street gang, were arrested in 2014 and 23 were charged under the new Illinois RICO Act but I can't find any follow up information about convictions. Earlier this year a federal jury convicted six members of the Hobos, a Chicago street gang, under RICO charges. Sentencing hearings, which can bring as much as life in prison, begin on June 23rd. This will bring the total number of Hobos convicted under the federal RICO statute up to ten. https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndil/pr/six-members-violent-chicago-street-gang-convicted-federal-racketeering-conspiracy And farther north, up in Waukegan, as many as 21 gang members have been convicted under the Illinois RICO Act. http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/lake-county-news-sun/crime/ct-lns-rico-racketeering-plea-st-0121-20170120-story.html
