Construction underway for Western-Belmont overpass demolition
CHICAGO - Construction has begun for the demolition of the deteriorating overpass at Western and Belmont. The actual demolition is slated to start on March 1. In the meantime, if that's an area you drive though, prepare for construction headaches and adding time to your commute as Western Avenue will be reduced to a single lane each way between George and Roscoe streets.

I am very tired of most reporters who are writing about this issue, and city officials who are quoted on the Belmont overpass. The press is giving them a pass. The press has effectively become a cheerleader for taking down the overpass. The overpass is constantly referred to as "The deteriorating or rapidly deteriorating overpass" . The only reason it is deteriorating is that it ceased to be maintained once the closed door decision was made to get rid of it. Rusting exposed metal could have been sealed and covered a long time ago. The other issues with it were directly related to a lack of maintenance. No one has been seen out there painting, sealing, repairing concrete etc. for years. Not maintaining it has been a cover for the decision to remove it. Once the cost is actually revealed, replacement of the overpass would probably cost the same as the grade level project, but maintaining what is in place would have saved the cost of the entire project for many years..

Not looking forward to another year of traffic headaches on Western!
Maybe we'll be happy its gone in the end. Funny thing is they did a lot of work on just a few years ago. Didn't they know then that it would eventually be demolished? Classic case of government waste.

  • I Had To Say It Reality does not equal negativity.

It doesn't help that there's a freeway entrance and exit ramp at Logan/Western. Bikes can't be accommodated everywhere. I suggest an alternative route. Would never catch me on a bike around there....

  • Expressway. If you're going to comment on Chicago issues, please at least use the local vernacular. We don't have freeways in Chicago. Those are in Michigan and California.

There are actually 2 properties wrote on. It looks like they wrote Smoke weed everyday and another one says MARSH. Another marking you can't read. They were wrote pretty high. Must be a tall person who wrote it. Any logic on what properties they choose to write on? It looks like thick magic marker and the other dripped like paint. Have been seeing people cutting through alleys lately.

    I reported the graffiti.

Also the other day there were people loitering by my privacy gate & fence in the alley which is set a foot into my property and a family member told the teenagers or young adults to go away as they were on my property since my fence is a foot into my property.

  • What happened after they were told to go away?

Cat Grooming

Does anyone know if the new store that opened on Irving, just east of Kedzie provides cat grooming services? And, does anyone know the official name of the store? I keep driving past and seeing Bark and Meow or something but don't know if those are just cute signs or the actual name of the store.
Thanks!

It's called Famous Fido. The manager is Gloria. Yes they will groom both cats and dogs and trim nails. It's also an animal rescue shelter and they adopt out rescued cats and dogs to properly screened adopters. I am currently fostering one of their cats.

  • Thanks Bernard!! That's pretty cool to know they are a rescue shelter, too, I always see stray dogs and cats around this neighborhood.
