  • The number of people shot and the number of people killed by gunshots over the Memorial Day weekend have been revised upward from the figures given on this post. Even the Drudge Report (12 dead, 43 wounded) is wrong. I see a story reporting 12 dead, 56 wounded. Yikes. #WHITELIVESMATTER

I've never seen pure black but I've seen everything in between. All of us are like a big box of Crayolas that has no sharp dividing line between the blues and the greens or the crimsons and the yellows. Do you use the old "brown paper bag test"? Buddhists think that all lives matter including spiders, mushrooms and seaweed. But Buddhists don't protest; they simply practice compassionate kindness and don't use #hashtags when they tweet.

I think a lot of people have come here fleeing either higher prices or deteriorating conditions in other places and that there is a great moment of economic and racial diversity that is really rare and precious in segregated Chicago, but that is fragile and not going to remain unless we are intentional about supporting it. I think that means intentionally blending the type of housing and prices. It also means that folks who want to do business here should hire from the neighborhood as much as possible. I also think a lot of people have worked really hard to make HP livable and I want to recognize and appreciate that.

Also, racism does not just go away by not talking about it. Being an antiracist ally means having a really honest self assessment of your biases and privelidges and deciding to really take steps to counter them. It involves not just being responsible for what you do, but also being responsible for what has happened in the past that gave you privelidge and for strategically engaging the community you came out of.

    Very sad, depressing news.

On the bright side, my Hyde Park, Kenwood, North of 47th street Lake Front Bronsville area seemed very peaceful and nice.

This year we did not have large, unruly crowds from other areas trashing our lakefront and engaging in crime and disorder.

At dusk, I went to the 55th street Point on the Lake which was well attended, diverse (lots of Muslim couples, families - looked like many were from the Balkans), students doing BBQ. The worst I saw was what looked like graduate students openly drinking beer from bottles. I don't have a problem with people drinking responsibly, but think folks should use other containers because bottles tend to not get thrown away properly and then the bottles break and this puts the word out that other classes of "youths" can hang out on the rocks, drink booze, break bottles start doing other things.

But, all in all - thanks to all my neighbors in Hyde Park, Kenwood and Bronzeville who helped make our communities safe and just nice and neighborly this Memorial Day weekend.

I get the feeling that most people, including rougher, criminally minded people now understand that Hyde Park, and the South Lake Front area from McCormick Place to 67th is a safe area, where diverse groups of just nice people use the parks and see to it that the bad things that happen in other parts of our city do not happen here.

    Thanks neighbors.

And thank you Chicago Police Department, University of Chicago Police Department.
