Yes, you do not have to pay, and it's wrong that gatekeepers shame you for running your daily errands.

I have worked the Taste of River North for several years. At our training sessions, we are always told to politely ask for the donation while referring to the signs listing RNRA's charities. If people refuse the donation, we are told to happily accept and suggest they stop and try the food anyway.

Actually, many people donate more than the suggested amount.

I'm not saying all gatekeepers do this, but they should. They should be trained. It's a huge inconvenience to have a festival in your neighborhood.

Two times I’ve been to EdgeFest, I was recovering from knee replacements (2012, 2013). The moment the ticket-taker saw my cane, he waved me right through. Last year, I anted up--I figured it was payback for letting me play at the farmer’s market (and I know how much some of the bands, especially popular ones like 16 Candles, charge for their services--back in the day, my band got a decent sum from Midsommarfest). But it should definitely be free for all who want to walk on the public street. Especially since those of us who would normally be driving (or biking) along B’way toward points south have to re-route all weekend--that inconvenience is bad enough w/o being expected to pay for the privilege of hoofing it.
