Conversion treatments are now being found where they are less expected: A former Jewish orphanage in Wicker Park is now a single-family home.

We own several apartment buildings, and in five cases the apartments were formerly commercial space. There was an Italian social club, a chain grocery store, a bar and two neighborhood sell-all stores, that we know of. We assume all of the spaces had multiple identities since the buildings are all over 100 years old. Those units are the most desirable and easiest for us to rent of all our apartments because the ceilings are taller and we were able to be more creative with the wide open spaces. That does not mean Gil is wrong because he would not like to live there, but our experience is that lots of people do like spaces like that and are interested in the history of the the apartment.

My aunt and uncle moved their family in a building that once housed a doctor's office. My uncle's father was a doctor and his practice was in that building. His mother gave them the building. Later they had the inside gutted and reformed into a 4 bedroom and 2 bathroom house with a large kitchen.

Meanwhile in Andersonville a church was donated to an organization helping homeless youth. They chose to list it on the market and use the proceeds for the organization's use. A building is a building. How it's used is up to the owner.

  • Try Big City Swing for fun on a "first Friday" each month. East/West Coast Swing are among my personal dances and the music is terrific. It's a fun evening and people are friendly. Go alone or take a friend. And, you'll see some terrific dancers who "jive" like they're from the 1940's-50's. I just grin and watch them (no jive anymore for me with cartilage worn out!)
