Gibsons Says They Want Mariano Park Spot Not for Profit, But to Save Park

GOLD COAST — Now that the lease for Whisper’s Cafe is expiring soon, more than 30 bidders have lined up for a chance at to replace it at the choice concessionaire site in Mariano Park, 1051 N. State St.

If Gibsons keeps their promise, their goals are closely aligned with the hopes of some vocal nearby residents, who voiced their concerns for the site at a public meeting June 1 at the Newberry Plaza, 1030 N. State St.

One contender, Gibsons Steakhouse, nearby at 1028 N. Rush St., says they want the concession contract not to make money but to protect the parkland, according to Sara Roberts, executive assistant at the restaurant.

Homeslice Owners Parking The Happy Camper in Old Town

Homeslice ownership is looking to expand their pizza operations to Old Town. They've taken over the former The Refinery space at Wells and Division streets and plan to open a new restaurant called The Happy Camper.

The Refinery closed in July 2014 after about a year at 1209 N. Wells St. Prior to that, the Old Town Brasserie had a three-year run from 2007 to 2010 at the same address. Hamilton hopes The Happy Camper will bring stability to the spot. Check back in the coming weeks for updates.

Is Gold Coast's Mariano Park in danger? You can act now.

It appears the Chicago Park District has been seeking bids for the concession space at the park that could alter the entire park itself. Respected neighbor and business Whispers Coffee and Tea (1031 N State St, Chicago, IL 60610) lease is reported as up in November.
