Assault near Oz Park

My cousin was new to the city and exploring the LP neighborhood right up the street from my place at Oz Park walking with a friend and some guy rolled up in a car, jumped out of the vehicle and then punched my cousin and got back in his car.

Just keep an eye out if you are walking around LP, sounds like stupid kids are playing games that are getting people hurt. My cousin had to go to the hospital to get stitches.

  • Hey Steve, I would agree that this is an anomaly given the neighborhood, I am just trying to spread awareness that it is possible and can happened even in neighborhoods where it is least expected. I want to make sure that our neighborhood is safe and always aware of their surroundings. I hope that this does not happen to anyone else.

I agree that raising awareness of such acts is important. My point is to place it into context.
Crime has motive 99% of the time. Given the facts there is nothing people can do to prevent this sort of crime. Most importantly one can't agree that it's an anomaly but then go on to claim it can happen anywhere. The nature of an anomaly is that it's rare/ uncommon. It's an anomaly if someone hits the lottery given the odds. True anyone can hit the lottery but given those odds it's not a realistic hope in terms of planning for your financial future. The same is true here. If people are going to take steps to protect themselves then they should focus real threats not the anomalies.
With the exception of never leaving your home there is no protection against this kind of random violence. Even those people who opt to arm themselves have little chance to defend themselves against such violence as no one can guess the intent of someone leaping out of a car charging toward you in a fraction of a second.
Only an idiot would shot someone for run towards them and would most likely be charged with crime themselves if the other party is unarmed.
So yes it's worth raising the issue. Is it something that the community should be concerned about? Answer no as given how rare this sort of thing is in this community.
Were this part of an ongoing string of crimes then yes there is a need to inform people such that they might change their behavior but not in this case. The only solution given the time and place is not to give in to fear based on something that is very very unlikely to happen to them.
If the residents of this community read this story and decide to start wearing their seatbelts more often then they are taking a step to making their lives safer as that's an example of a real threat to public safety.
