Patio furniture

A few weeks ago the wind took our umbrella lifted it up and smashed our glass patio table. Anyone know what is the best place to buy one besides a home depot, etc. possibly a used one!

Any idea what is being built on the old Les-On site. For two days they have been tearing up the parking lot. Also on Central next to the gas station they have been demolishing that site for awhile. Any info on either?

  • St. Mary of the Woods School reviewed by a parent

This school is great if you have an average child. SMOW cannot handle any child that needs a lot of help, or one that is very intelligent and bored. The former principal was a nun that ran a tight ship, but was slow to embrace technology. The new principal in last 4 years brought on technology which is a blessing. However, I feel he was too non-confrontational, had no leadership skills. This year alone there is a large turnover in staff, including the principal (I believe he was asked to leave) and assistant principal (who was great btw, but got a better offer elsewhere). And there are some teachers that have been there for a very long time, including one for over 30 years. Most are excellent. There is very little control of bullying issues, to the point that several families have left this year alone. The bullies stay, the victims leave. There seems to be strong push for athletics over academics, especially football. However most, if not all, students do get into their chosen high schools, including a few to Northside, which is next to impossible to get into. The school is very community based, with high parent involvement. A lot of fundraising goes on to keep the tuition down.

Dog Park
The dog park will be relocated to the northeast section of the park and be enlarged to about 10,500 sq ft.
Work to start in June taking about 6 wks to complete.
There will also be other improvements made to the parks plumbing, etc. and other minor improvements made to other community parks as part of this effort.
Existing dog park will remain open during transition.
The existing location can be returned back to its prior use for ice-skating.
Several residents asked some general questions about the design, hours, drainage issues etc. The alderman, gent 1 and gent 2 answered.
State Rep. spoke very briefly, comments not substantial, other than implying he had something to do with obtaining funding.

Res 1: Was a park usage survey done before decisions made regarding the dog park?
As she believes it’s required residents within a 5-block radius be surveyed prior to usage changes.

Alderman O’Conner: No it hadn’t (not sounding sure) and the dog park was put in motion prior to me taking office.

Res 1 pursued the issue and the Alderman stated that it wasn’t an issue for a public forum, they could discuss privately.

Overall the audience favored dog park relocation and improvements.

I was reading the post above about all the probs w/ the dog park. I only go occassionally but everyone I meet there is from the hood so I don't know why it keeps being said ppl don't live in the area. (So what, I have gone to Wicker Dog Park, we are all Chicagoians)

I drive and walk by several times a week and at different times, and I have never seen anyone parked in the crosswalks. The hours are honored because they lock it , but I think there should be no hours, as long as the park is open.

It never looks dirty from the inside or outside when I walk by. So it is cleaned by the ppl who care about it.

Dogs have been running around that area long before any park was officially built and there was no formal concern that anyone was citing at any time. No one is going to get hurt for any reason that is related to the dog park. The same ppl with dogs have been driving and parking and walking in that area for DECADES!

Try Andy F., I have known him quite a while, he has done plenty of work for my neighbors and they all loved him. You couldn't beat his prices. He's done this for some time and started his own business about a year or two ago. I think you'll like him. 773-968-7852.

O'Connor speed camera vote

On March 19th, Alderman O'Connor wrote "While I would certainly welcome investments in new signage, street markings and speed humps, I disagree with the idea of having a fixed or mobile speed camera along residential streets within 1/8 of a mile of any school or park."

Today she voted to approve the ordinance.

Loading loading

  • I am against the speed cameras and feel that she backed down on this issue. But the idea of boycotting her business seems wrong. I think personal and public business should be kept separate. Rather than boycott her business (I'm not sure who her customers are anyway) a protest at her office is more appropriate. Just my opinion.

  • howiehandles NW sider

@SJ, I would agree with your boycott issue. Her work as an alderman is the issue, not her work as a small business person.

SPEED CAMERAS

As a senior and long time resident of the 41st, I think the fact that speed cameras are not going to be installed where there are already speed bumps and that each site for speed cameras has to be approved by the alderman means that there will not be many of them. Also, I hope that the results of the cameras will be reviewed on a regular
basis. Also, these fines are a form of user fees. If you speed, you pay. Don't speed, don't pay.

From what I see-everybody is a dog owner. There is a strong dog owner lobby group and from what I hear they put their time and energies into this project. We don't have a dog but this gathering place is good for the neighborhood. As long as the people in the area are not inconvenienced I say go for it.

  • The NPDA is a great organization 4 responsible dog owners. It was not their decision 2 put the park in the skate rink. That decision was made by former ald.Doughrety & the C.P.D.As 4 the residents on Natoma I think they know they live across from a park & high school and the area is not exactly a "Quiet Zone".And I really hope ald.O'Connor is not a dog owner,.

Proposed outdoor patio permit at 5237 N Harlem

I received notice from the city that Marrio's Caffe at 5237 N Harlem is applying for an outdoor patio license. Did anyone else receive this and have any idea where this outdoor patio is supposed to be located, (in front or rear)? I live very close, and their clientele already park on my block (residential parking restrictions), and make a lot of noise when leaving on weekends and occasional week nights.

  • is that the bar owned by the cop? kiss your concerns goodbye

  • We live in Chicago. We all have to deal with noise and parking. Wouldn't you rather have thriving local businesses versus aging foreclosed buildings?

Gates were stuck due to a malfunction. Metra had been there multiple times day and night to work on the mechanical problem. Cops hate that assignment to direct traffic around downed gates.

"Just curious about the new bike racks you see through Lakeview. They are cool colors and in the shape of a bike. I like them and just wondering if they were purchased by the city or some how locally. Any comments would be helpful?"
