Bicycle Commuting

I'm moving from out of state and would like to bike to work in the Medical District. One mapping program suggested taking Oakley Blvd to W Taylor to S Damen. Any safety tips about this route? Thanks!

I appreciate the tip. I'll try it.

  • I would never, EVER ride on Ashland. Ever. (or Western for that matter.) Too narrow, no bike lanes, too much truck traffic. Paulina is a great alternative, though.

I was coming home on the bus and they re-routed it at Michigan and 24th. A man and I decided to get off and walk the rest of the way to 26th St. There were police who were blocking the street. I figured all I needed to do is show my driver's license and they'd see where I lived and let me through. After all, the police notified our building to keep an i.d. on us for the duration of the NATO conference. I told the cop that I live in South Commons. He said "Sorry, we can't let you through." I asked why. He replied "You don't wanna know." Another officer said at the same time "They've found a bomb in a car." He pointed about a block down.So the Chinese man (who's visiting from China and been here about a week visiting relatives) followed me to Wabash, where we then walked South. We walked till we got near I-55 and came to a border of security fences. I didn't know if we tried to walked along the fence, we could get through to Michigan Avenue. I saw some police driving slowly past on the other side of the fence. I flagged them down. I asked if we could get through if we walk along the side of the fence to Michigan Ave. They said yes. We squeezed through the area and came out on Michigan Ave. at the I-55 bridge. We saw cop cars blocking access to the bridge from 26th St. When the man and I got to 26th St. they didn’t question us. I don’t know if the info on the bomb has been on the news yet, but we were re-routed at about 6:45 pm.

For those dog owners who are breaking the law by letting your dogs roam free in Smith Park, including in the tennis courts, your refusal to leash your dogs when asked politely was brought up at the last Beat 1313 CAPS meeting. Residents and park personnel in attendance were advised to call 911.

According to park personnel, three children have been bitten in the last year. One adult complained about being harassed by a Doberman in the morning when walking through the park to catch the Metra train. Children and adults alike have stepped in dog feces while playing sports or walking through the park.

Hopefully, increased police attention will curb this illegal and inconsiderate behavior. If not, owners who continue to let their dogs off the leash in Smith Park and the surrounding neighborhood are running the risk of being ticketed and paying a significant fine.

  • That's actually a really great point and one I guess I don't really think about. Still though, I feel that if I clean up after my dog and use good judgement, I can still let my her off the leash in an empty park. Especially a big park like Eckhart. I've never really been down to Smith, but If I do, I'll make sure to mind my p's and q's.

This is a problem at all of the parks. I totally understand that the responsible dog owners with gentle dogs would like to let their dogs off leash.

Unfortunately, other people have no way of knowing what type of dog owner or dog they are encountering. Many children and adults in urban areas have strong (with reason) fears of dogs. Also, it just isn't safe for other dogs.

I even see large groups of dogs off leash at school yards where there are clear signs that say no dogs at all. Otis School on Grand and Armour has a severe problem with dogs off leash. The principal has even had to send children home from school because they have had dog feces on their clothes after recess :(

I think the city could create more dog parks to help out the dog owners. I heard there might be one going in Humboldt Park! But in the meantime, dog owners should just follow the park rules and keep everyone safe (and clean!)

  • Another nondescript building for the West Loop. It's like there's no zoning or master use plan there...

  • Ugly building, more traffic and noise, refuse billowing about, odious food, and destructive atmospherics for the fine Lyon & Healey concert series across the way. On the good side: a franchisee may secure her hold on her middle class life and otherwise unemployed youth may experience work and thus start on a constructive path. Sigh. Even Stalinists are right sometimes: to make an omelette requires breaking eggs.

Near West teacher wins Golden Apple

St. Malachy is located at 2248 W. Washington Blvd. on the Near West Side, and many of the neighborhood’s kids come from farther west, where their neighborhoods can be rough. For them, school is a shelter and a place to take solace — a place where they don’t have to watch their backs.

From New Bike Racks - where did they come from?:

"Just curious about the new bike racks you see through Lakeview. They are cool colors and in the shape of a bike. I like them and just wondering if they were purchased by the city or some how locally. Any comments would be helpful?"
