Hey CDOT, did you a favor today

Saw your job-box was wide open at 8pm- long after the crew left for the day.
Maybe they had an emergency and had to split, maybe Tony though Sal locked it up...I don't know!

But after seeing the shovels, rakes, trowels and other costly tools in there the best thing for me to do was to lock them up for you.
Your shiny, bullet-proof Master lock was just sitting there on the ground so I put it on the lockbar and voila! Stolen tools and wasted tax dollars averted!

Lets be more mindful tomorrow ok??

Car Accident on Ashland

Did anybody else witness the incident on the 2500 block of Ashland last night? Somebody was severely injured right outside my apartment and I can't seem to find any news on the story or his condition.

  • Nobody? This guy was hurt pretty bad, I wont get graphic. I cannot believe I haven't seen a single thing in the news. My sympathies go out to him and his family and friends.

Gunfire in Logan Square

At 11 p.m. last night there was a flurry of gunfire on Mozart - just south of Armitage. There were about ten shots then it was over. Police arrived shortly after. Any idea what happened?

No idea (sorry), but considering that is less than a half block from the police station, I'd certainly hope they could get there quickly.

More on the Art Fests

And, back to the art fair issue....I've come into further information on this issue that is pertinent and enlightening.

With regard to the 10% Bill Morton talked about:

And, back to the art fair issue....I've come into further information on this issue that is pertinent and enlightening.

With regard to the 10% Bill Morton talked about:
A non-profit group usually doesn't have the wherewithal to undertake all the expenses for a festival such as insurance, bonds, etc. So, what they do is partner with one of the business groups or chamber or other entity that can underwrite the event as part of their umbrella. They are acting as what's known as a "fiduciary agent". The standard fee for this agency is usually 10%. This is not a political donation, it's not money for a political purpose and it's not money for anything other than the event and its business operating expenses.
I hope this clears up any confusion.

In addition, there's also the issue of how the "Save the Neighborhood Art Fairs" petition arose. It was my mistake in calling the elimination of fee waivers an "ordinance". I'm sorry if that was misleading...I had been mislead to believe it was an actual ordinance change. I've since been educated further to the exact nature of the change. It happened thusly:

The Chicago 2012 budget was being considered and voted on in the city counsel in November. There were a few Aldermen who had discussions on the elimination of a line item in the proposed budget that was allocated for discretionary Aldermanic spending for fee waivers of various type. According to Joe Moore, Alderman of the 49th ward, there were only a few aldermen that understood the nature of the line item elimination and who had even discussed the possible outcomes of the change.

Moore admits that most of the aldermen never even knew the specifics of they were voting on, but just gave a blanket approval to the new budget on November 16th, 2011. (And, I'm sure there were other items buried in the budget that got changed without much understanding, as well.) Even the new budget couldn't accomplish the task of easing the fiscal pain we're feeling.

  • Art fests and street feats are two different things.

  • the original issue was waiver of street permit fees so these are street festivals that have art instead of music or food.

Alternatives to ComEd

I'm sorry, I know this issue has been posted about before (repeatedly), but due to the lack of a search function, I'm unable to find some relevant prior posts.

I'm considering switching from ComEd and am wondering what other people's experiences have been with the alternatives? Good, bad, etc. Any thoughts would be helpful. It seems as if there are now lots of different suppliers in the marketplace, so I'm having trouble selecting a new one.

  • Very helpful everyone, thank you.

Also, I apologize that for some strange reason in my message above, all of my commas appeared as periods? Weird.

Hopefully someone will come up with this question periodically. Reason being that rates change among providers--to stay competitive? This may be a repetition but try this: http://tinyurl.com/c7aewo3

Thing is you have to monitor the rates. Why? I changed to a company because Delta was offering miles to switch . About a year later I found that this company was charging more than ComEd.

Also, consider whether there is a cancellation penalty. Some providers offer senior rates, but Trisha is most clearly not eligible for that.

Crime Concerns

I live on Wayne street between Webster and Belden. Sometime, in the last two weeks my car was broken into and my radio was stolen. The mechanic think they were try to hot wire it because they also screwed up the steering column. It was a 90s silver cadillac. Did anyone see anything? (Also last week my roommates bike was stolen) Has anyone seen anybody messing with a silver caddy or a bike?

There's a flea market at Ashland and 42nd. Bikes get stolen up here and then sold at that flea market quite frequently. Mine was. The way I got my bike back was because the goof that bought it from the flea market tried to re-sell it on Craigslist.

I can't remember the hours the flea market is open, google it.
If your roommate knows the serial number or still has a receipt for the bike that would be preferable. I called up the shop I bought mine from and they still had my info.

If you two are feeling adventurous, go to the flea market THIS week or ASAP. I wanna say its like $5 to get in. If you see it, call 911 (Chicago Police told me this), and tell them that you found it at the market. They should either make them give it to you or arrest them.

If you don't see it, then I'd suggest floating around craigslist for a few days.

IF you still haven't found it... its probably in the basement at the Alamo and your roommate is S.O.L.

    Good Luck
    Nick

Taggers arrested, charged.

I caught 2 drunk and stumbling taggers red-handed @ 5:15 this morning at 1830 Marshfield, they had been painting graffiti under the viaducts of the Bloomingdale Trail (see attached pics) I held them until CPD arrived and we have a good arrest on both with a court date.

I will be asking the Judge via the Alderman's office to get community service so these 2 bozos will end up rolling white paint on EVERY viaduct wall in the 32nd Ward. The empty lot in the last picture is the place I cornered them. Tags are listed as "YELL" & "BLADE"

  • Andrew, can I come tag or graffiti your front door, or better yet, your parent's house? That would be fabulous art if I completely cover your parent's home in spray paint, right? The doors and windows on our building get etched tagging on the glass. Our front door archway gets spray paint tagging regularly. We have to call to get it cleaned up nearly once a month. No one in our building or visitors that come here think it is art.

Thanks Steve J to acting on crimes in progress.

Did an artist actually use the phrase "spirit of defiance" to justify tagging and graffiti? Wow.

"Just curious about the new bike racks you see through Lakeview. They are cool colors and in the shape of a bike. I like them and just wondering if they were purchased by the city or some how locally. Any comments would be helpful?"
