Help us get on the ballot - 13 (5 of 5)

I’m walking south in the 6300 block of Cottage Grove, east side of the street. I’m actually right outside the office of the incumbent when, lo and behold, here is The Man himself! He’s just about to step into his nice and shiny silver Mercedes when I loudly say, “Excuse me, sir. I’m gathering signatures for Jerome Davis to get on the ballot for 20th Ward alderman and I wonder if I can get yours?” He responds to me, smiles,...

He’s just about to step into his nice and shiny silver Mercedes when I loudly say, “Excuse me, sir. I’m gathering signatures for Jerome Davis to get on the ballot for 20th Ward alderman and I wonder if I can get yours?” He responds to me, smiles, and I say to him, “I’m sure I speak for many when I commend you for being a true servant of the people of this ward. You’ve been a tireless worker, dedicated to the task of making better the lives of 20th Ward residents. We appreciate your efforts and thank you for all you’ve done. And we are so appreciative of what you’ve done that we now want to send you on a much-deserved vacation as our way of saying ‘thanks’ for a job well done.” Employing a sports analogy, I continued by saying he had given us some strong ‘innings’ and kept us in the ‘game’ but that now it was time to turn it over to the ‘bullpen.’ He said why should he turn it over to the ‘bullpen’ when he was quite capable of finishing what he started, “Just like the pitchers on the 2005 White Sox when they won the World Series.” I corrected the incumbent by reminding him that while there was some very strong starting pitching, the games they won were actually ‘nailed down’ by Bobby Jenks coming out of the bullpen. “Ozzie got a bit of notoriety with the motions he made with his hands and arms when he would signal for ‘the big guy’ to take the mound.” I then proffered my card to the incumbent and he accepted it. He looked at it and said, “Who is Jerome A. Davis?” With my arms spread in a welcoming pose I said, “He stands before you in the flesh!” This brought a grin to the face of the incumbent and he asked me, “Where do you live?” “62nd and Michigan,” was my reply. He looked back at the card, smiled, said he’d see me around, and was off. He did keep the card, though.

You were/are 100% correct, CT. And guess what else? The incumbent was about to step into his nice and shiny silver Mercedes.

  • Thank you. My work is done here.

Help us get on the ballot - 13 (4 of 5)

While praying my phone started ringing. When I got a chance to check the message it was Jeremy. He and Josh had arrived and were headed to me. The 3 of us were joining forces to ‘attack’ 63rd and Cottage Grove, which would be my next destination. But since it was gonna take the guys some time to get to me, I figured I’d go back to my place on 62nd and Michigan and wait it out there. Josh and...

But since it was gonna take the guys some time to get to me, I figured I’d go back to my place on 62nd and Michigan and wait it out there. Josh and Jeremy did make it to 63rd and Cottage, whereupon they immediately ‘discovered’ Daley’s Restaurant. I gave ‘em some more time to order and eat. When I arrived they were taking their last bites and were just about ready to hit the streets.

The most, I don’t know, enlightening? Revealing? Humbling? One of the ‘things’ about doing this is what you hear from people. The young mother who wishes her 3-year-old daughter could play in front of their house south of 63rd and east of Cottage, but doesn’t dare let her for fear of her daughter getting shot. (Just think of the madness we tolerate.) The middle-aged woman that wonders what is going to be put “on all these vacant lots around here.” The 30-something guy that has a vehement distaste for the current alderman, and wants the next one to initiate a serious jobs training program focusing on the building trades, that will culminate in union membership. The 18-year-old woman who was the first person to sign my petition today and can’t wait to vote. When I do this the uniqueness and worth of every individual becomes so apparent.

  • And what makes anyone believe that you would be any better ?

  • JD Independent Candidate for 20th Ward Alderman

CT - any better than what?

When I got to 66th, I turned around and saw the police officer signaling to me. We began walking toward each other and when we met, he told me that what he already knew had been confirmed by headquarters. I thanked him and we parted. Almost immediately thereafter, 2 gentlemen (I’d say they were in their early 30’s but like I said, I’m not too good at this age guessin’ stuff) came out the church and crossed the street to where I was. One of the gentlemen stated that I had been observed by the pastor and he requested that I not continue what I was doing. The gentleman went on to say that the ‘proper’ way to go about this, would have been to contact the pastor and meet with him before starting out. I basically said that I would cease my efforts and leave the premises, but I asked the gentleman how does one contact the pastor? Before he could answer, I handed him one of my cards and said maybe he could submit my name and contact information to the pastor. He was agreeable to the idea and accepted 2 of my cards, 1 of which he assured me would reach the pastor’s hands (or, I assume, at least his desk). Before I left, the gentleman thanked me and asked me to pray with them. At that time we were joined by the patrol officer, who completed our impromptu 4-man prayer circle. It was about 9:15 when I removed my hat, bowed my head, and felt the chilly morning breeze blow across my bald head. We joined hands.

At about the midway point of the block a CPD patrol officer sat in his squad car. I acknowledged his presence and he returned my greeting. At about the midway point of the block a CPD patrol officer sat in his squad car. I acknowledged his presence and he returned my greeting. I kept on with my methodical pace; I had yet to encounter anyone. I was surprised to find at the end of the block another church, Sword of the Spirit Church (http://www.swordofthespiritchicago.org/). Surprised because I didn’t think 66th and King Drive held any surprises for me; so familiar was I with this block – or so I thought. I also thought with Sword of the Spirit I had increased my chances of gaining a significant amount of signatures.

I crossed the street and began walking north on King Drive; I’m on the same side of the street as New Beginnings now. It was just a bit past the church entrance when I approached my first citizen, a man who appeared to be in his early to mid 20’s (but I’m terrible at guessing people’s age). I asked him if was he a registered voter and without breaking stride he said, “I don’t vote.” I replied, “I wish you would” but as soon as the last word was out of my mouth he was through the church doors and gone. Less than a minute later, a young woman was about to enter the church. Before I could introduce myself and state my purpose she interrupted me with, “You know you can’t do that here.” When I tried to engage her she pretty much repeated her previous statement and punctuated it with something else about “not allowed” and “you can’t.” Like the young man she never actually stopped while talking but kept walking and went in the church. Well, I thought about what the young lady said (or was trying to say) and it didn’t ‘jibe’ with my (albeit, rudimentary) knowledge of civil liberties. I decided to use the police officer present as the final arbiter. I went across the street to him, explained what I was doing there, and asked was I in violation of any laws or ordinances. The officer said as far as he knew I was perfectly within my rights.

Help us get on the ballot – 13

It was 9:00 when I got to the corner of 66th and King Drive. I started strolling south on the east side of King Drive, right across the street from New Beginnings Church (http://nbcchicago.tv/). I thought this might be a good place to try and get petition signatures for a couple of reasons. Obviously, there were going to be people here today, but I also figured in light of the pastor’s endorsement of Republican candidates for governor and senator, there might be a sense of ‘independence’ (for lack of a better term) in the air, which might make some of those present more prone to support (or at least lend their signature to) an Independent candidate. This is pretty much what I was thinking as I began my task. I was also thinking how New Beginnings Church now occupies the spot where Roberts Show Club/Motel/Bowling Alley used to be. Herman Roberts; look him up. He’s mentioned prominently in Dempsey Travis’ An Autobiography of Black Jazz, a book that should be in every 20th Ward home. Actually, that’s 2 guys worthy of your personal research, Dempsey Travis and Herman Roberts.

Sunday, October 19th beginning at 9:00 AM, I’ll be strolling up and down both sides of the 6600 block of South King Drive asking you to sign our petition. Those of you familiar with the area know this puts me right in front of New Beginnings Church of Chicago, where Corey Brooks is the pastor. The good pastor made news this past summer with his endorsement of Republican Jim Oberweis for the U.S. senate. He has also endorsed Republican Bruce Rauner for governor. Maybe Pastor Brooks is ready to really raise some establishment ‘hackles’ by endorsing an Independent for 20th Ward alderman; I know just the guy. (I kinda doubt Pastor Brooks lives in the 20 anyway.) ‘Fact is, the only endorsement that really means anything is yours. Our candidacy gets the supreme endorsement when you sign the petition. For those of you so inclined New Beginnings has 2 services; 10 AM and noon. I’m gonna try to hang for both of ‘em (weather permitting). C’mon down and be an important part of a movement that, if successful, will reverberate all the way to City Hall. You shouldn’t have much of a problem spotting me; I’ll be the hopeful looking guy with the clipboard. Jeromedavisward20@gmail.com
