Not for the big corporate guys (Whole Foods, et.al.), they can take care of themselves. I’m talking about people like you (probably) and me (definitely). The elected representative must do all she/he can to assist the development of small businesses. I’m gonna say what many have already said: we need to start lookin’ more like the North Side around here. Plenty of ‘mom and pop’ shops of all kinds up there. You know, I walk and bike the streets of the 20th Ward. You can’t go 50 feet without encountering a young cat rappin’. The guy may have some talent, I don’t know, I’m tone deaf when it comes to a lot of popular music; but let’s say the guy has some talent. Why don’t we have outlets, here in the 20th Ward, to nurture and develop that talent? Why don’t we have recording studios in the 20? Why aren’t there more local and independently-run performance venues for this young man? Why hasn’t someone opened an office that discovers and manages prospective talent, there appears to be a lot (of talent) around here? You’ll find all 3 of the aforementioned businesses in abundance on the North Side; recording studios, performance venues, and talent/booking agencies. The next elected representative should exert their efforts in bringing small businesses of a diverse nature to the 20th Ward, but I digress. You should come to 5760 South Lafayette at 10 AM on Saturday, October 4th and I’ll digress at an even higher level. I, personally, find spoken word digression much more entertaining than written word digression.

Help us get on the ballot - 5 (2 of 3)

1) We want people to vote. Yeah, I know; they/we all say this. But how many candidates are making this the centerpiece of their campaign? As has been previously stated: the overriding goal of our candidacy/campaign is to get 90% of the eligible voters in the 20th Ward to vote. We believe good things happen when everybody participates; history is a witness. I’ll rant and expand on this when you catch me in person but first and foremost, we want...

We believe good things happen when everybody participates; history is a witness. I’ll rant and expand on this when you catch me in person but first and foremost, we want everybody to vote (especially those of you between the ages of 18 and 30).

2) I’m tired of living amongst filth. What is it about some of us in the 20th Ward that we will not only tolerate, but contribute to, a trashy neighborhood? Many of us have actually become oblivious to the garbage around us, its presence so ubiquitous, so pervasive. A dirty neighborhood impacts its residents in a myriad of ways (not just hygienically). If you don’t think garbage-strewn streets aren’t a factor when it comes to attracting new businesses and economic development, think again. Would you buy a dirty house, in a dirty neighborhood? Only if you had to, only if you didn’t have a choice. The vast majority of businesses, the kind we want, have choices. No one’s gonna take us seriously until we take ourselves seriously and we seriously need to start cleanin’ up around here. An elected representative should have this among the top priorities for the ward.

Help us get on the ballot – 5 (1 of 3)

One of the ‘standard’ questions a candidate will be asked is, “Why are you running for (whatever the office is)?” I’ve been preparing for this, concocting ‘standard’ answers in my head so that I’ll appear spontaneous and witty. One of the ‘standard’ questions a candidate will be asked is, “Why are you running for (whatever the office is)?” I’ve been preparing for this, concocting ‘standard’ answers in my head so that I’ll appear spontaneous and witty. I’ve come to the conclusion there’s no way to (honestly) answer the question without sounding somewhat pompous and haughty; as if you’re the only person capable of doing whatever it is you say you want to do. Truth be told, there’s no shortage of people, given the opportunity and the tools, who could perform the duties of various elected officials in a more than adequate manner. (Most of these kinds of people, however, usually have better things to do.) They, in all likelihood, would rather not be bothered with the intense scrutiny and constant criticism that are endemic to anyone in the public realm. Who in their ‘right’ mind would knowingly and willfully engage in an endeavor which they know at the outset could, at any moment, descend into character assassination, unsubstantiated accusations, and ‘mudslinging’ of the most vicious sort? Who among you, I ask? Who?

That’s a trick I picked up from the ’professionals’; how to completely avoid the original question and go off on an unrelated harangue. But as to the original question, here goes; and get ready, it’s gonna get thick:

On a related note; if anyone has any old toys their pup has lost interest in, consider giving them a second life by donating them to one of the dog parks... also any grocery bags for the bag dispensers would also be greatly appreciated.

Help us get on the ballot - 4

We’re gonna officially launch this thing, the occupation of the 20th Ward aldermanic seat, at John Raber’s old house, 5760 South Lafayette. We’re gonna officially launch this thing, the occupation of the 20th Ward aldermanic seat, at John Raber’s old house, 5760 South Lafayette. The historical record describes John Raber as a real estate developer and politician. His house is one of the few remaining structures in Chicago that was built before The Great Fire (October 8, 1871). Old JR must have really had it goin’ on because the property was originally on a 6-acre plot. The main entrance was actually on State Street and you had to walk about a block to get to the front door. Old drawings (and photos) depict a beautifully manicured garden one had to traverse prior to approaching the threshold. Well, whatever grandeur this sturdy edifice may have once possessed is long gone now. The City currently owns Raber House and they say they can’t find a buyer which is somewhat tragic because the building was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1996. Now it’s just another raggedy building, wasting away, on a residential block with more empty space than occupied houses. Sadly, one might call it a typical 20th Ward block; decaying houses, 2 or 3 occupied homes, and lots and lots of lots. Raber House could be the ‘poster building’ for what ails the 20th Ward; a community replete with untapped and neglected resources (both human and inanimate).

So, on Saturday, October 4th at 10 AM, join us at 5760 South Lafayette Avenue, partake of whatever ‘freebies’ we may be able to provide (probably some juice and some pastry), sign a petition, and ‘grill’ me with any questions you might have. Maybe we can rig up a speaker and jam some house. Not too loudly ‘cause I know it’s early. Plus, I gotta hear what you have to say. O.K., maybe the house music might not work this time. Even though there ain’t a lot around there. (Engine 84, the firehouse, is right down the street on 59th.) I guess I’d better make it clear: we won’t actually be in the Raber House, just out front. (‘Hope the weather’s good.)
