Endangered Schulze Bakery May Soon Be Reborn as a Data Center

On Wednesday, Landmarks Illinois put the former bakery at 40 E. Garfield Blvd. on its list of Most Endangered Historic Places for the year. On Thursday, the developer said financing is now in place to revive Schulze Bakery.

  • If it comes to pass it would be great news for the community. It would bring some jobs to the neighborhood and would remove a potential eyesore from 55th Street.

The Arnold-Crowe House, at 3329 W. Washington Blvd.: The house, influenced by the Gothic and Moorish Revival styles, was originally the home of Adolph Arnold, the Schwinn co-founder. The mansion’s next resident was Robert Crowe, prosecutor in the notorious Leopold and Loeb murder trial of the 1920s.

Central Park Theatre, 3535 W. Roosevelt Road: Designed in the style of a European opera house by architects Rapp & Rapp, the 1917 theater was the first movie palace built by the Balaban & Katz theater chain, according to Landmarks Illinois.
