CPS Announces Revised Bus Stops for SY 15-16
For students, this change will mean traveling an additional two blocks on average to reach their bus stop. Families have been notified of their children's new stop, which in most cases is the bus stop nearest to their home. If they have concerns about their child's assignment, however, parents may choose another nearby option.

CJ, they’re not using the bus-cutting savings to hire more or better teachers. Casey, when my son was in high school the state was still reimbursing for transit, but that was over a decade ago so you may be correct.

  • @CJ Gladstone.... I may be wrong, but based on memory the CPS busing budget is c $50 million ?? annually. IMO if busing was not a cost item that $50million would not be appropriated and spent on anything.

@CJ Gladstone.... I may be wrong, but based on memory the CPS busing budget is c $50 million ?? annually. IMO if busing was not a cost item that $50million would not be appropriated and spent on anything.

Back Story from memory = Chicago arrived at the current busing situation this way: Someplace c. 1965 Chicago's public schools were found to be separate and unequal, with substantially more being spent on neighborhood schools in white neighborhoods than schools in black neighborhoods (Hispanics, Asians and others did not register at the time). The school system was told to level the spending but that proved too hard to do in an acceptable way. So the court decided to let parents bus their kids to a school of choice, making the disparate spending patterns less motivating/source of complaint. White percentage of students in the system went into rapid decline and now is someplace c 11 - 13% (depends on who's stats you believe). So the courts recently said there was no longer a reason to bus for integration & level spending. But the bus habit remains because some schools/areas are deemed more desirable than others. And by direct awareness in some cases the long bus ride constitutes a free baby sitting service. TL:DR = the CPS tries to budget educational program costs uniformly across the whole City. Separate from that the buses cost c. $50 millions?? a year because of parents chasing after schools with better reputations --- which might or might not be factually supported depending on the compared schools.

TL:TL:DR Busing is not cutting into staffing.

The Mountains of Black Dust Next Door Were Covering Them in Grime. So They Fought Back.
Published today at 10:27 a.m. Three years ago, Southeast Side residents started noticing mountains of black dust-some five stories high-rising along the banks of the Calumet River. "It looked like Mordor," says Olga Bautista, a longtime resident of Vet's Park. "It took a while to process how grave the problem was."
