Shots Fired Saturday and Sunday

It's been a trip back to the bad old days this weekend in Uptown.  Don't know if the gangs are starting a new (senseless) chapter in their ongoing quest to snuff each other out, or if they've got spring fever, or if they think the police response will be reduced due to NATO being in town.  In any case, not fun for the rest of us.

Boom! This morning

Anyone else hear the very loud noise this morning at around 7am? It sounded like it was coming from near Argyle and Sheridan.

Uptown ‘Pigeon Lady’ Charged With Shoving Ald. Cappleman Over Breadcrumbs

Cappleman said he saw the breadcrumbs on the ground near Broadway and Wilson Avenue, and began to sweep them up. The woman got out of the car and became irate, police said.

Police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti said police responding to the attack called pulled over the vehicle about 2:45 p.m. Friday in the 1100 block of West Wilson Avenue, steps from the scene of the attack, after other officers had spotted it.

Because of the influx of pigeons, Uptown Update said in the June 2011 entry, pigeons had taken over the exterior of the shuttered Majestic Store for Men at Broadway and Leland Avenue, and “the awning at neighboring Apartment Vigilantes (4705 N. Broadway) was covered in pigeon poo.”

Hey there, I have lived in the RP/Edgewater neighborhood for the last 5 years. Basically that means I am a few blocks south of Devon around Glenwood. That neighborhood is very nice, with several community gardens in walking distance, sufficient grocery stores (incl. natural grocery stores), and a few great restaurants like Uncommon Ground. The block I live on is generally pretty quiet.

Rogers Park undoubtedly has more to offer by way of cultural attractions and is a bit edgier, more interesting. However, there is more crime and ongoing gang problems that seem to be plaguing the area around Morse/Ashland (this feedback is from someone I know who lives in that area). Rent is likely a bit cheaper in RP as well.

Both can be near the lake if that's important to you. And both are accessible to transportation options like the Red Line and buses.

Hope this helps! Happy apartment hunting!

Woman charged with pushing North Side alderman in breadcrumb dispute

Ald. James Cappleman (46th) said he saw breadcrumbs on the ground near North Broadway and West Wilson and began to sweep them up. A woman then exited a car and a confrontation occurred.

A three-vehicle police tactical team stopped the car a short time later in the 1100 block of West Wilson, and Kang exited from the passenger’s side and threw rice near a sign warning of a $500 fine for feeding pigeons, police said.

Kang, of the 4900 block of North Winthrop, was charged with misdemeanor battery and issued at least one citation, police said.

Cappleman assaulted while cleaning up bread crumbs

Sorry, I couldn't really come up with a comical title for this post, but figured I'd pass this article along.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-police-woman-arrested-for-shoving-alderman-in-pigeon-dispute-20120518,0,384755.story?track=rss

Seems Cappleman saw a woman feeding the pigeons on Wilson, so when he came back and began sweeping them up she threw more bread crumbs on him and shoved him into the street before fleeing.

Police caught her later, again feeding the birds, and arrested her.

Frankly, I say good for Cappleman. Feeding the ducks is one thing, but feeding the pigeons just creates a mess.

Alderman Assaulted by Pigeon Lady

Alderman James Cappleman, who just celebrated one year in office Wednesday, was pelted with breadcrumbs by an Uptown resident, who is known throughout the community as the "Pigeon Lady".  According to the Chicago Tribune story, "A 59-year-old woman is accused of shoving an alderman she thought should have “better things to do’’ than sweeping up breadcrumbs she left for pigeons" in the 800 block of West Wilson around 2:30 yesterday afternoon.

Getting Channel 5.3 (In time for the Olympics)

So this may not seem like a very important question unless you don't have cable -like me- and want to watch the summer Olympics on 5.3 as well as channel 5.

Has anyone else noticed that 5.3 has been blacked-out for awhile? Is anyone else bummed that this means less coverage of everyone's favorite quadrennial sporting event?

Does everyone but me have cable?
