Mom of slain Urban Prep student: 'Can you please put a sheet over him?'

According to Chicago police, Hoard was not far from his home and near 106th Street and South Yates Avenue when an SUV pulled up around 7:15 p.m. Monday and someone inside opened fire. Hoard was hit in the chest; his friend Chester Palmer, 23, was grazed on the head.

Palmer, in a telephone interview, said he and Hoard were walking through the 10500 block of South Yates Avenue when a black SUV pulled up near them and stopped. They were going to get milk from the store, then maybe play basketball at a park gym. The car window lowered.

Deonte Hoard Slain, First Urban Prep Student Killed, School Officials Say

Deonte Hoard was with a 23-year-old man around 7:15 p.m. in the 10600 block of South Yates Avenue when someone opened fire, police said.

Deonte, of the 10500 block of South Oglesby Avenue, was shot in his chest and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

King said Deonte was the first pupil murdered while enrolled at the school, 6210 S. Stewart Ave.

Paramedics were called about 7:15 p.m. to the 10500 block of South Oglesby Avenue in South Deering on the Far South Side, said Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Frank Velez.

The woman told police she was walking on a sidewalk in the 2700 block of West 55th Street with her brother when two attackers emerged from a gangway and one of them fired shots, police said. The woman and her brother ran away from the attackers, according to police. 

The man told police he was in an alley in the 1000 block of West Marquette Road with three male friends who came over to his residence to help him move a TV, police said. A verbal argument occured, and one of the man's friends pulled out a small caliber handgun and fired shots, police said. 

At the crime scene, police blocked off part of the sidewalk and intersection at Carpenter Street and Marquette Road.
