I was coming home on the bus and they re-routed it at Michigan and 24th. A man and I decided to get off and walk the rest of the way to 26th St. There were police who were blocking the street. I figured all I needed to do is show my driver's license and they'd see where I lived and let me through. After all, the police notified our building to keep an i.d. on us for the duration of the NATO conference. I told the cop that I live in South Commons. He said "Sorry, we can't let you through." I asked why. He replied "You don't wanna know." Another officer said at the same time "They've found a bomb in a car." He pointed about a block down.So the Chinese man (who's visiting from China and been here about a week visiting relatives) followed me to Wabash, where we then walked South. We walked till we got near I-55 and came to a border of security fences. I didn't know if we tried to walked along the fence, we could get through to Michigan Avenue. I saw some police driving slowly past on the other side of the fence. I flagged them down. I asked if we could get through if we walk along the side of the fence to Michigan Ave. They said yes. We squeezed through the area and came out on Michigan Ave. at the I-55 bridge. We saw cop cars blocking access to the bridge from 26th St. When the man and I got to 26th St. they didn’t question us. I don’t know if the info on the bomb has been on the news yet, but we were re-routed at about 6:45 pm.

Working Bikes has a million and one bikes to choose from

I met a friend in Pilsen Wednesday to have lunch and then visit Working Bikes Cooperative (2434 S Western Avenue), a non-profit organization that repairs bicycles to sell to Chicagoans and also to send to people in Africa, Cuba, Guatemala, Peru and even the Gulf Coast. Volunteers and some paid staff take in donated bikes – from individuals, from collection drives, and even from the Chicago Department of Transportation’s own abandoned bicycle pickup program – organize, repair, and then sell or ship them. I asked manager Raul Gonzalez for a quick tour. I came in knowing the warehouse held a lot of bicycles, but I couldn’t imagine how many.

(You can donate your bike as well.)

The man who wasn't afraid of the mayor

In 1987, he converted a vacant lot at 815 S. Oakley into a lovely memorial garden to Vietnam vets. Not surprisingly, he had to fight like hell with the state to get the land.

Lavicka's greatest fight—the one that consumed much of the 1990s—was the struggle to preserve the Maxwell Street peddlers' district, near Halsted and Roosevelt. He lost to a conglomeration of the powerful led by the second Mayor Daley and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Mr. Lavicka helped co-fund the 1970s preservationist movement for urban pioneering of the 1500 block of West Jackson Boulevard, now listed as a national landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 2010, while renovating the Gut Heil Haus, a turn-of-the-century fortress-like building that formerly was a German Social and Athletic Club at 2431 W. Roosevelt Road, Lavicka slept in the property at night armed with a baseball bat to guard its beautiful interior appointments.

From New Bike Racks - where did they come from?:

"Just curious about the new bike racks you see through Lakeview. They are cool colors and in the shape of a bike. I like them and just wondering if they were purchased by the city or some how locally. Any comments would be helpful?"
