I was coming home on the bus and they re-routed it at Michigan and 24th. A man and I decided to get off and walk the rest of the way to 26th St. There were police who were blocking the street. I figured all I needed to do is show my driver's license and they'd see where I lived and let me through. After all, the police notified our building to keep an i.d. on us for the duration of the NATO conference. I told the cop that I live in South Commons. He said "Sorry, we can't let you through." I asked why. He replied "You don't wanna know." Another officer said at the same time "They've found a bomb in a car." He pointed about a block down.So the Chinese man (who's visiting from China and been here about a week visiting relatives) followed me to Wabash, where we then walked South. We walked till we got near I-55 and came to a border of security fences. I didn't know if we tried to walked along the fence, we could get through to Michigan Avenue. I saw some police driving slowly past on the other side of the fence. I flagged them down. I asked if we could get through if we walk along the side of the fence to Michigan Ave. They said yes. We squeezed through the area and came out on Michigan Ave. at the I-55 bridge. We saw cop cars blocking access to the bridge from 26th St. When the man and I got to 26th St. they didn’t question us. I don’t know if the info on the bomb has been on the news yet, but we were re-routed at about 6:45 pm.

My boyfriend and I stopped by Swagger last night after driving past it and seeing its lights on. Can I say that this place has ALL of the bells and whistles of a top of the line lounge. I don't even think my description would do the place justice! But it has a full service kitchen, a bar both upstairs and on the first floor, two outdoor padded seating areas with colorful lighting, an outdoor stage for performances, an outdoor fountain, a TON of flat screen tvs, dining area, a room for jazz performances, a Playstation section, beautifully decorated his and hers restrooms on both floors, lounge rooms on both floors, plenty of security on hand, and a friendly, accomodating wait staff. We met with Kara and she gaves the complete tour. I have been screaming about solid businesses and nightlife coming to Bronzeville for a while and Swagger has surely helped to fill the gap. They are currently open on Thursdays through Sundays and stay open as late as 2AM. As the word gets out, they plan to add more days to be open during the week. The menu consists mostly of bar food, and the menu is light, but it's still a great selection and the lounge plans to expand the options as popularity grows. Oh, and there is also plenty of free parking, so that is always a plus! OH...what a breath of fresh air for Bronzeville and the south side of Chicago! Please support this business soon!

  • I love when business begin to boom in our neighborhoods. I will have to check this spot out, thanks Erica.

Loiter & Litter

What gives? I saw about 6 Bronzeville Military Aca students lingering on one of the blocks off of 35th st today around 5pm. Aren't the CPS volunteers supposed to make sure they get to where they need to be instead of standing around? To boot, one of the students had the nerve to just dump his paper bag on the sidewalk. Disgusting.

I am not kidding myself about Woods. I know what they sell. They were smarter than our elected officals and found a way to stay in business. They are there so I believe we should work with them to help our community. I am picking up fewer bottles every week. Interestingly, I find Patron bottles now.

He checked into to the matter and reported back that Joann Leatherwoods still owns the place and the liquor license is still in her husband's name.

If you are a neighbor you know we have been fighting to close liquore stores that are near schools. When Mr. Leatherwoods died several years ago we were told that the liquor license could not be transfered. I can't believe Alderman Dowell would let a new store open.

Will anyone shed some light on this for me?

The negative traffic knocks on doors of residents and this is making them scared. It doen't matter if they were looking for someone else. If thugs or squatter's kept knocking on your door, how would you feel??

The neighbor said Leon Finney of the Woodlawn Organization manages this building and theri contract is up for renewal this summer.

The neigbor also began to also share how her quality of life has changed at this CHA Building. She did share that under the previous management, the building felt safe but not any more and now the seniors are frightened about what is happening!

She said they are unable to report the concerns to management because they are the one's allowing the safety at this location to become compromised.

I suppose the this building does not screen it's residents right. Could this account for the robberies and drive ups in cars??

I'll never forget driving down 35th and seeing the Jimmy Food and Liqour owner/employee(?) with a big wrench in one hand and pulling a man up by his shirt with his other hand while he threw him out of the store. I'm guessing the man was trying to steal something. At the end of the day, Woods is still an ugly liqour store, with a deplorable goal to only make $$$.

Yes the police presence has been great but I totally agree with you! They need to get out and walk around a bit. These female officers are "rubber neckin" on their damn cell phones most of the time and the male cops seem to either be eating or trying to holler at women?! it's also extremely annoying when they find the need to park their mammoth police SUV's alongside one another to talk, thus obstructing the road for any vehicles attempting to get by. Do these people have any common sense? Why do the rest of us have to follow the law and they don't? just because they are cops? It sends the wrong message and is unnecessary in all but the most unusual circumstances. I do applaud the police presence though. Apparently they rounded up a bunch of the thugs that were operating across from mcD's but I see they have already been replaced by new hoppers that have merely moved their operation a block or 2 around the corner.Come on guys, it's not just about parking their and doing nothing! Be engaged and practice actual law enforcement. A bit of physical activity will not kill you guys...I promise;)

  • The police said they are already aware of what is happening on Giles; strange men pulling up to do drug deals from cars. Also watch the beauty supply house on Giles. Sometimes it looks as if it is a hangout for young boys in their 20's with loitering on 35th and on the Giles side. The beauty supply house at Lake Meadows does not have this type of activity. What is really going on?? Is the blue light on Giles at 35th being used by the police??

  • Good suggestions. So far the increased police presence on 35th has been great and drastically reduced loitering in the area. It makes walking through much easier and helps the local businesses. Thank you CPS! It's great to see we are doing our part to help the police do their jobs easier and even better.

The police even protested having to work at Harrison/Kedzie! It is too dangerous they say. Egads...guys with guns, autofire weapons, bullet proof vests are AFRAID to punch the timeclock. They however do not car a diddle squat about US.

The way it works in our great city is: there is not enough to go around. Then, factor in that there are preferred and non preferred neighborhoods/zip codes. Those preferred neighborhoods/zip codes are mostly within 2 miles of the lake and are TOURIST neighborhoods or high income earning neighborhoods. Then factor in Chicago corruption and all the elected officials who siphon off lucrative contracts to their friends or dole out things to their friends. Then factor in UNION inefficiencies. Oh, lets not forget infighting and vetting considerations.

Those are all formidable obstacles that any Chicago alderman has to face EVERY DAY.

There is no guarantee that a certain color alderman will bring better results than a different color alderman. In fact, if you think simplistically; you can see that certain color aldermen whose map territory are depositories for larger numbers of subsidized housing people...have the most deplorable conditions in their neighborhood. Where are the calls for CIVIL RIGHTS EQUALIZATION?

Chicago is a tough nut...that is for sure.

From New Bike Racks - where did they come from?:

"Just curious about the new bike racks you see through Lakeview. They are cool colors and in the shape of a bike. I like them and just wondering if they were purchased by the city or some how locally. Any comments would be helpful?"
