CHICAGO – Last week, the Illinois State Senate Executive Committee unanimously supported legislation to prohibit new or expanded landfills within Cook County and promote the preservation and restoration of unique environmental areas. The bill, HB 3881, was introduced by State Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) and supported by dozens of community and environmental groups to preserve Chicago’s 30-year-old landfill moratorium that has protected the Lake Calumet region from further landfilling. Since 2005, no landfills have been in operation in Chicago.

In addition, the Chicago City Council introduced a resolution with 31 aldermen signing on to support HB 3881. The City of Chicago has been trying to block an attempt by landfill owner Land and Lakes, Inc. to disconnect 87 acres from Chicago and attach to suburban Dolton, which would allow them to expand its landfill – which in fact is scheduled to close by 2013.

Sen. Harmon’s legislation is supported by dozens of community and environmental groups including the Illinois Sierra Club, the Illinois Environmental Council, and the Environmental Law and Policy Center. The measure which will prevent new or expanded landfills in Chicago and Cook County is being fiercely opposed by the waste industry.

Public agencies have invested millions of tax payer dollars in acquiring and restoring properties in the Calumet area. Additional funding is committed or planned for on-going efforts to develop the Calumet Open Space Reserve and Millennium Reserve, often in conjunction with other large-scale environmental programs such as the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

Does any one know where and how to get replacement covers???

I wish they were made with paper or plastic, maybe they won't be so marketable and attractive to these unsavory thieves!!!!
We are under attack, let's fight back ! Be vigilant and call the Police when you see supicious activity, 10-4!

The police can help by actually doing their job by questioning the guys who stand on the corners everyday.

U.S. 41 extension to fuel development at South Works

Earlier this month Mayor Emanuel held a press conference at the former U.S. Steel South Works (USX) site, a weed-strewn piece of vacant land bigger than the central Loop, bulging into Lake Michigan from 79th to 92nd. He was there to herald the construction of a new $21 million, four-lane boulevard that will run two miles through the site, intended as the future main street of the proposed Chicago Lakeside Development.

The city gave Lakeside $98 million in TIF for Phase 1, the shopping center, (that's property tax money that we contributed to) but gave South Chicago and the Commercial TIF districts no more than $10 million. Why is it that we don't have a say in what is being built in that area if its our money that is being used?

TIF money is supposed to be used to aid blighted neighborhoods yet the city is giving our money to development corporations while we're being kicked out of our homes because of an economic crisis that we had nothing to do in creating. Meanwhile, the banks and corporations responsible for the economic crisis (and the foreclosure crisis) have been given billions in 'bail outs' and tax breaks. How does this make any sense?

Not to mention that South Chicago was founded on the steel mills and many of our residents and their families have sweat, bled, and died on that land, and the development corporations still have the audacity to say we have no right to it.

I am not against development, I'd love to have access to the lake, a park, etc, but let's take a look at the details of the development and ask ourselves, who is the development meant to attract (the dave mathews caravan concert last summer let me know quick) and how will it impact South Chicago, the Bush and South Shore?

Let's come up with a development plan that doesn't displace us, a neighborhood and people who built the sears tower, the john hancock, and who continue to serve the city that continues to ignore our presence, needs and voices, so clearly evidenced in the details of Lakeside.

  • Denise Denson Minister/Community Advocate

I have posted for months that this is coming. I never once got an answer or a quibble how it would affect us and what we could do to be more involved in this. As it stands it is too late to do too much all of this is a done deal. NEXT!

stolen mailbox covers in Chatham

Hi, thank you for those who responded to my last post regarding the stolen mailbox covers. I was wondering does anyone know where are these covers are usually sold to? Is there any scrap yard in Chatham, and how much would that person get from selling those? I contacted Alderman Sawyer and apparently he is aware of the situation, but CPD has not given me any comment. Any clue will be helpful!

All crime deserves attention big and small. I don't think anyone has said that what has happened to us ( mail cover thefts) is more important than other more serious crimes. So your comment just gives me more encouragement to report what might seem not very important to some, so we will have hope for more serious issues that might arrive at our door steps or community. We all read the news or at least hear it, but all crime is a problem and should be to each and every one of us, big or small!!!!

They said that the people in the community do not help. People in the community do not come to meetings and we don't all ways call when something is going wrong. I know people that do call, BUT CPD does not show up or after it all over with then they show up. We do go to meeting, etc and still I see dealing going on.

We need not to give up but to keep at it. It hard but durable. We did it back in the 60's and 70's. After we MADE IT we stop. The poor communities in the city need jobs and not mid wage jobs along with education. We need to stop talking about it and start doing something about it. WE the PEOPLE have to tell Government everyday that this needs to stop not just every 4 year. We can do it. Email, call, and write to the people we place in office to GOVERN over the people. That we not going to take it no more.

Stolen mail boxers

Hi All, my name is Kevin Wang and I am a reporter from Medill News Service in Chicago. I am a frequent visitor of EveryBlock and I have finding your discussions useful for me to generate story ideas. It seems that many of you on the south side have seen your mail box covers stolen, some of you say this happened on the north side as well. I am very sorry to hear that and was wondering who could be doing this. I was wondering if any of you affected could let me know what happened to you with more details? I am interested in doing a story on this issue. Please feel free to contact me at: qixinwang2012@u.northwestern.edu

Stolen Mailbox Covers

This weekend the metal thieves struck again on 89th & 90th Paxton and Luella. They took the mailbox covers off several homes. As far as I know, none of the residents reported this to the police. I guess, some people are just feeling overwhelmed by crime and don't see any improvement or results and therefore have lost hope.

It's hard for me to believe that the police don't know where this stuff is being taken to be cashed in, or that the places that accept scrap metal don't know some of this stuff is probably stolen. I mean come on, why would somebody have in their possession 10 mailbox covers or door knobs?

Loading loading

  • Hey, if the metal wasn't being bought then they wouldn't be stolen, so we need the police to start dealing with the companies who're buying them, that will make a difference!

  • The ordinance will give the police the power to go through the records of the metal yards and see who is bringing in stolen merchandise. The customers will have to present ID and the metal yards will have to record what they are bringing in. There will be major penalties for accepting stolen merchandise
