Live about Belmont & Pulaski

Ownership of the Jewel at Belmont and Pulaski?

Does anyone know the party or person who owns the vacant Jewel at the corner of Belmont and Pulaski currently? Or if there are any plans for how it is going to be used? I'd like to track them down, and try to have a conversation with them on getting permission to at least check it out to see if it is feasible for an urban farming project.

B.S. I'd much rather have an urban farm there than [yet another] fitness joint, non-grocery dollar store or an empty lot, and so would a lot of us neighbors. I don't know if it would be feasible, given the expense of breaking up the concrete and putting in arable dirt, but it's worth a try, and if you ask about it, it might light a fire under Planet Fitness. Frankly, I'd even prefer WalMart to Planet Fitness or the big fat nothing that sits on the SW corner of Belmont/Pulaski.

Thanks Maz, given the age of the parking lot I would not pursue breaking it up due to the environmental hazard posed by the dirt under it. I'd need to test to make sure, but more than likely it is so contaminated with heavy metals and other toxins from leaded fuel usage, etc, that it all have to be taken away for about eighteen inches down and then properly disposed of off site. Also with the possibility of that dirt leading to dust, and the senior's village next door, it be better to isolate it. So I'd have to engineer a way to put some type of barrier down over it, than adopt an approach to build on top of that, while limiting the possibility of further contamination. A lot of work, and additional cost, but possibly needed given what the situation might be like there.

I need a dining area that can contain a 54” table. On-premise laundry, dishwasher and adequate storage space is a plus. Small building…2-3 flat or apartment in a house, by owner is preferred.

While I've looked at some nice places, they would be more appropriate for a person in their 20's with less furniture and different needs. Please watch for “For Rent” signs in your neighborhood. I am interested in the following zip codes: 60640, 60641, 60618, 60613,60202, 60201, 60614, 60610, 60625, 60657, 60659, 60646, 60630

Please pass this on if you know of someone who might have a place available. You can contact me via this post and I will respond asap.

Thanks!

Walmart is coming to Cicero/Diversey area?

Permit issued for renovation/alteration

Issue date April 5, 2012

.Estimated value $7,000,000
Application number 100433398
Work type Renovation / alteration

A reconfiguration of a building's interior or exterior. WALMART SUPERCENTER 4600 WEST DIVERSEY- EXISTING BUILDING REMODEL AND LOWER PARKING GARAGE- 116,720 SQUARE FEET-4600 WEST DIVERSEY .

I haven't gotten anything from the alderman about it. There is already a Walmart less than a mile south of here at Grand and Cicero. A comunity meeting would be nice to have on this. Traffic between Cicero and Kostener along Diversey is horrible as is.

  • This would be terrible for our ward in my opinion. The small businesses in our ward will suffer and be run out because of a Wal-Mart. On the flip side it might bring in more revenue for the hall. But, the ward will turn into an unfriendly place for small businesses sadly.

  • Contractors listed are from the SUBURBS, already proving no jobs here.

  • Thanks for this - I had two guys at my front door (Warwick and Austin) about 2 weeks ago saying they could inspect my home for damage.

  • I have had this done before, and it wasn't fraud. If someone is going to inspect your home for damage, just make sure you're there for it to watch. Or insist that they NOT inspect before insurance gets there - any legit company should have no problem with this. If your area was hit by storms, the damage is there whether they look at it first or not...

Any industry has dishonest people working in it; giving a bad name to honest contractors isn't warrented because some are frauds.

The neighborhood has improved a lot in terms of sweeping the streets of prostitutes and gangbangers in the past couple of years since I have lived near Armitage and Pulaski. Within this time frame, I have also started a family. I'm registering them to a new, local daycare and one of the things a worker and myself were talking about was a serious lack of a sense of unity in our neighborhood. I feel like everyone knows everyone by face, but not by name. Can you please help this by maybe hosting events throughout the year? One thing the worker suggested was having a sidewalk festival to support local businesses and to meet our neighbors! I think this is extremely important in maintaining a safer community. It's disheartening when I tell people where I live and they say "That's a rough neighborhood." Or when I would prefer to drive to Lakeview to jog simply because I don't trust my neighborhood's safety. Can you please do something about this common feeling in Hermosa Park?

Sounds pretty unofficial (although humorous), but I think the real issues are the survey lines & whether the new fence is a joint purchase/project with your neighbor. If it's a joint project you can probably safely run it right down the line, otherwise I think there's a setback distance distance off the line required. And yes, barring catching a neighbor illegally installing a fence on your lot, you are responsible for it.

I'm currently mulling my options/approach with a neighbor who went in on a fence with us about 7 years ago. Their yard is seriously at least 6 inches below grade (the yards on both sides of them as well as the alley), and they compounded that problem by planting invasive "running" bamboo. They're nice people, and I was OK pulling up bamboo here and there on our side of the fence, but now the bamboo is not only undermining the fence posts & has caused a good chunk of it to flop around on windy days but has spread far into to my yard and is attacking the foundation of my building.

In response to making your shop "kid friendly" may I suggest looking at how Nohea Cafe in Roscoe Village accomplishes this? They offer everything you mentioned you want to eventually offer at your shop: coffee, pastries, and sandwiches. They are very kid friendly and have accomplished this by simply purchasing a kid table, chairs, and a few toys. People flock from all over the area (including myself/my children and we live near Montrose/Pulaski) to bring their kids here so that the parents can enjoy their coffee/eat lunch and the kids can play for a little while. Best of luck!

Thanks again neighbors for all your support and encouragement. Below, please find my response to your initial comments and questions regarding http://chicago.everyblock.com/announcements/dec16-coffee-house-coming-soon-4533886/
First, I want to say that I acknowledge the newly opened coffee shop in the neighborhood and I admire their risk and initiative. I hope that there is space for two similar businesses so that ultimately the neighborhood will benefit from them.
My idea is to bring a trendy place to our neighborhood without the high prices characteristic of places like Lincoln park or Wrigley. I hope to create a gathering place for residents to relax, get to know each other, mingle, network, or simply get lost in our wi-fi. I intend to create a coffee shop that looks like it belongs on the east side of the city without the comute and traffic.
The concept is simple; a lounge with a relaxed ambiance that will serve a simple variety of espresso drinks, and teas, supplemented by pastries from a local bakery. The coffee shop will also have a conference room available to the public to reserve for private meetings. On the days that it is not serving its function, this room will serve as a quiet/study room for those that prefer a quiet space.
I know some of you have expressed your desire for a kid-friendly spot. Even though not in my original plan, I will consider setting aside a corner for kids and parents can meet and chat.
I have already stumbled upon some obstacles that have delayed the operations but if everything goes smoothly from here, the coffee shop should be open by mid August. The hours of operation will tentatively be from 5:00 a.m. to 6:00/7:00 p.m. I know some of you care for longer hours but the aforementioned schedule is intended for the assessment phase.
I hope that I can provide all the essentials of a coffee shop that Portage Park neighbors have expressed and I look forward to meeting all of you in person at the new coffee shop at Portage Park.

I noticed that there is a big orange sticker on the doors from the department of buildings. This bar has been kind of annoying- even when it was brudders- but the crowd has become even more bothersome since it changed to "Vibe" or whatever the new sign says...The patrons tend to walk down addison when it closes late at night yelling and being especially drunk and crazy. Does anyone know why it was shut down? My hopes are that they can clean it up and make it a more attractive corner spot... I might have high hopes- but it sure would be nice!

May I suggest starting your project this way?

Most onsite estimates/quotes are still free. I would start by calling around to schedule free estimates, (the more-the better). In this process, you will become educated and learn the correct terminology helping you to better communicate exactly what needs to be done and what you need to ask for. This also gives you more negotiating power when entering into a contract. Once you’re confident you know what needs to be done and have some general price ranges, THEN call Angies’s list and go from there.
Even "some" (not all) contractors registered with Angies list will take advantage when they smell a uneducated or vulnerable customer.

Thanks, Dee, for your post. I travel that way day and evening for my businesses and will remember to keep an "eye up" if I see anything like that. Thankfully your husband didn't get hurt and felt it was important enough to let the EveryBlock community know so they also can be aware. Viaducts are dangerous places to conduct that type of behavior.

  • I'm thinking of that lady who had the shopping cart dropped on her, almost killing her, and the local punks who dropped bricks from the overpass on the Ryan a few years ago. This is life-threatening behavior and intolerable. Thanks to your husband for the 911 call & to you for posting this alert.

back in the early 60's we were walking behind the Gateway on Avondale, and a group of older kids were throwing rocks from the RR tracks over the tracks and onto the Kennedy.Never saw these kids before. When we got halfway over the bridge on Ainslie,a man pulled up with a cracked windshield and bleeding from his head.Told the man it was the older kids,he said the older kids blamed us.he realized we didn't have the arm to do what they said, and tore off after them again.Never saw them again afterwards either.

The Missus & I were very impressed by the turnout and the presentation last night.

And it seems to have gotten more attention from the local media. Newsradio 78 aired a short piece this morning, and will probably run it throughout the day.

So when's the midnight showing of "Song Remains the Same"?

Took the kids to Ihop this morning. The one on Cicero south of Hutchinson. The man behind the greeters desk didn't acknowledge me once, until he caught my glare and seated us. We were seated, my waiter came after a few minutes and started immediately speaking to me in Spanish. My Spanish is limited. I am darker complected, but was raised by my Irish mother.. It was frustrating. Anyways, I started speaking English so mr waiter caught on that I didn't speak Spanish. He was super nice and I tipped for that. Halfway through my meal, however, I began to notice the people being seated around me. It seemed that this waiter was only given the Hispanic patrons.. And the majority of those seated around me were Hispanic. When I left, I made sure to glance at the other side of the restaurant. What do you know... Mostly Caucasians with a few people of other races spaced here and there. I would have said something but i have no guts and being a young mom alone with her kids, I dont get taken seriously enough. The rude greeter stopped us on the way out to give us our lorax seed packets, which was nice of him. But bleh, I'm not going back there again. Im not sure what their deal is..

From New Bike Racks - where did they come from?:

"Just curious about the new bike racks you see through Lakeview. They are cool colors and in the shape of a bike. I like them and just wondering if they were purchased by the city or some how locally. Any comments would be helpful?"
