The marketing tagline of a skyscraper under construction at 1001 S. State St., which will be 41 stories and have 397 apartment units, is "Where Curiosity Lives," to tie into the neighborhood's artsy values, said Paula Harris, principal at Golub, which is co-developer along with CIM Properties.

Several more murals are expected to spring up in coming months. At Wabash and 9th Street is what Kelly calls "the mother of all walls in Chicago," a 12-story blank...

A few blocks north, Gene Charness, the owner of Warehouse Liquors at 634 S. Wabash Ave., is in talks to host a second mural on his building wall, which Kelly said would be by Brooklyn-based artist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, famous for her anti-harassment messages.

Gerry Curciarello said he was hesitant at first to give the OK for a mural on the side of The Buckingham, a student residence hall at Wabash and Van Buren.

When writer Emily Novick and her husband, Steve Goldstein, then a pediatrics professor and physician in chief at Comer Children's Hospital, moved to Chicago in 2004 from the East Coast, they scoured the housing market in Kenwood and Hyde Park, looking for a home that would offer enough space to...

    Movies like Spike Lee's 'Chi-raq' aren't Chicago's real problem
Memo to anyone still hyperventilating somehow over how the war zone allusion of "Chiraq," "Chi-raq" or whatever spelling Spike Lee is using for his Englewood movie might not reflect well on Chicago: When this city is on the silver screen, it's often the tarnish that draws people in - and it hasn't driven anyone or anything away yet.

Helicopter flying back and forth

Anyone know why a helicopter was making repeated flights back and forth over the loop last night around 11-11:30? At first I thought it was a media-vac, but looked to be the same helicopter the entire time. Filming a movie, maybe?

Garbage in the streets

Are business owners responsible for keeping the area in front of their business clean?
I walk on 13th St. every morning past the hair salon and dentist and the street and sidewalks are a mess. Not sure where the garbage is coming from but if I were a business owner, I would make sure my area in front would be inviting for customers and not look like a trash pit.

  • Mary Lou: There is no obligation (that I am aware of) for business owners to clean the public area in front of their businesses. There is an ordinance that requires them to clear the snow and ice. Apparently the business owners do not appreciate the negative impact trash in the street and sidewalk has on their businesses.

Consider speaking with the Alderman's staff about encouraging the business owners to take 10 minutes out of their day to clean the area in front of their businesses. It will improve everyone's view.

  • I walk that street every morning as well. Besides it being a mess, it stinks really bad the last week or so

  • Sheila A. Donovan Have been an owner at the Stratford since 2001.

When I worked in a ma and pa grocery store during high school, one of my many chores was to sweep the sidewalk every day. It takes just a few minutes and keeps the area from looking like a garbage pit. Same thing goes for shoveling snow. (Yeah, I did that at the store, too.)

Looking for parking space to rent (E. 14th St and S. Michigan Ave)

We are moving into the South Loop mid August and while we have a parking spot for our car we are looking for a space to park our Vespa scooter (hopefully near E. 14th St and S. Michigan Ave). Unsure at this point if it will be a termporary or permanent parking arrangement. Is there a popular place people advertise available parking spots? If anyone has any leads or suggestions I'd really appreciate it as I don't know where to start looking....
