Seeking former steel workers for book

I'm interviewing former South Works, Wisconsin, Inland, Bethlehem, LaSalle or Republic steel mill workers for an oral history of Chicago's steel industry, focusing on the mass closures of the '80s.

I want to talk to people who were there about what it was like, and about what their lives have been like since they closed the mills.

I can't pay for interviews, but if anyone has a story they want to share about how closing the mills affected the community, we'll talk. Thanks.

You can get in touch with me here: http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/com/5046578408.html

First Chicago made it a law that landlords could not discriminate against prospective renters because of their source of income (i.e., Section 8 voucher). Then, when Preckwinkle became Cook County Board President, that law was extended to all landlords in this County.

But if you invest in property in other parts of this state, as a landlord you CAN refuse to rent to people with Section 8 vouchers. Now I don't know if the Chicago Housing Authority can issue the vouchers for outside this county, or if there are other agencies in other counties.

It would be informative to learn exactly where the CHA is misspending taxpayer money. I wonder if a Freedom of Information Act request could force them to reveal not names but addresses where they are subsidizing tenants and their landlords. Because every subsidy benefits 2 sides -- the user of the benefit and the provider of the benefit.

  • Its easy to get around renting to section 8 vermin. I own several properties and have had no problem weeding them out from the applicant pool. you just have to be subtle about it.
