Parents Choice

My son attends a school for children with disabilities that is included in the grid for the NATO summit, the school sent out a notice last week giving us options for school attendance. I have decided to keep my son out of school on Friday and Monday. I am working on my "gut" feeling and as a parent I want to protect my son. I am all for the cause, the leaders know we are dis satisfied about jobs cut and foreclosures but you have some protesters that truly are game for violence and destruction, the web is blowing up with threats of violence.

  • I say follow your gut and stay away from the foolishness. Some of these protesters do not care about anything or anyone else other than their jilted agendas.

  • Yup, go with your gut and keep your child at home.

I don't know! Can it?

Can better parenting make Englewood safer for kids?
Ran across this story on line. But it is a question for not only Englewood but most of our communities. Like I previously stated on last week, we have kids on our block that are under 5 yo playing up and down the street without supervision.

Can better parenting make Englewood safer for kids?
Ran across this story on line. But it is a question for not only Englewood but most of our communities. Like I previously stated on last week, we have kids on our block that are under 5 yo playing up and down the street without supervision.
Some years back I recall DCFS stepping into families telling the parents that they were not permitted to phyically discipline (some kids need it) their children and in a few instances parents were arrested for doing so, also parents were told they could not invade a childs privacy (their bedroom in your house).
Parental guidance is a must for all children, there are parents/guardians in some cases that refuse to see the wrong and turn a biind eye to the kids hanging out. "my son is a good boy, he goes to school everyday", but is he a student at the school is actually attending classes or is he just hanging out.
Last summer when we had a incident in my community that resulted in a shooting death, one parent said "my son is going away to college, so you all can stop blaming my house for alot of the crime around here".
Now don't get me wrong I was so happy to hear that he was going off to school if he had needed a ride I would have taken him there myself, but unless the son is an Einstein, completed a 4yr university in 4 months he is still hanging out, business as usual.
What type of parent are you when you socialize and hang out in the club with your children and their friends?
I don't do "it takes a village to raise a child". I am not the parent to your kids you had them you raise them, I don't need the village because there may be a child molester in the village.
"I want to be friends with my kids", NO, I am the parent keep it real we will not party and hangout together, I think respect is lost when you remove the parent bar and lower it to the friend bar.

  • I think that many of the parents are less than 20 years older than their children, meaning that it is a level of maturity that has not been reached yet...
Personally, DCFS guidelines about children privacy and whatnot is just plain hooey! My child is 18, not allowed to close her room door unless she is changing her clothes! I randomly inspect her room, phone and etc. HOW ELSE WILL YOU KNOW WHAT'S REALLY GOING ON!

Suspicious Item on 85th (Durkin Park)

Outside right now, what is to believe a suspicious cell wrapped in duct tape around a pole. Did anyone else see it?

Loading loading

  • Did you call the police?

  • I would hope that instead of asking about this "suspicious item" that you call 911 First. Follow you gut about "suspicious" items/people, the first line of defense is Us, We need to call 911

  • The situation was averted. The cops came, cleared everyone out in the park, and removed the cell. Nonetheless, scary and weird experience. CPD did a great job on this side of the neighborhood. Hopefully, they can do the same for others.

Don"t get it twisted

I was going into a CVS store (79th Western) last week, this guy was asking for money well after no one gave him any he told another beggar, "they would feel hurt if I just snatched a purse". I thought to myself "don't let this pretty face fool you". Walgreens and CVS need to stop these people from standing on the property begging.

  • Another reason we need to have the right for concealed carry, to protect ourselves from scum like this.

The crooks know that law abiding citizens cannot carry a weapon.
Their approach to crime would change if they had to guess who was packing and who was not.

For the last 2 days my door bell has rang and each time it's one of the kids on my block, he has to be about 2 years old. He is outside with his older brother who is somewhat impaired. I have advised them to go home (I live in the middle of the block they live 2 houses off the corner). It bothers me because on today the toddler is pointing to my neighbors dog who is in the yard and barking. I told him to go home and not to go near the gate where the dog is because if he sticks his hand through the fence he is going to get bitten.
Why don't people watch their kids when they are outside, in my opinion these kids are walking post kids for a child molester.
When my children were young, I supervised them. I too have a child that is impaired. I have been living in my home 15yo and no one on my block can ever say they have seen my son outside unsupervised. And now that he is older he likes to sit on the deck so I have a camera's that monitor my yard.

People are having kids like its going out of style...Everywhere you look theres parents with like 6 kids.Thats not a problem the problem is learn to be responable for alll of your kids..Parents go and have more and more kids and what happens is that the older kids that are still kids end up raising there lil siblings..It becomes a chain these kids will have kids and the same will happen.. My mom is a teacher and she tells me alll the time its soso hard dealing with the parents..Lil kids look neglected and you could tell theres no help for lil onces at home..Then the trouble makers its hard no obedience at home let alone at school..I'm not a parent i'm only 24 years old i understand its hard to juggle a home, kids, bill, dinner,go stores ecta but if what you need is sometime to do alll this and more hire someone a babysitter to take you kids to the nearest park, zoo, somewhere to let some energy off..These kids are full of energy thats alll they need is to let it out runnn and scream..lol dont we need that as adults sometimes to just be let out of our cages..I'm sure someone will babysit for $5 and hour or so or parents with parents ex: i'll watch your kids take them with my kids to park this weekend and the another parent takes them the following weekend or weekday..Work together.. =)

Pickup Truck and Garage

Not sure what I saw at 4:40 a.m., there were headlines on in an alley, I thought they were pulling out of a garabe but headlights didn't move, then a pickup (Ford or Chevy) pulled out with the back full of items covered with a canvas(?). I could see the handle of a lawn mower sticking out.

It's not a junk collector type of truck,

I couldn't tell what color the Pickup was, black, blue or red, but I it was dark in color, it appeared to be a nice looking pickup. The darkness and rain wasn't any help.

The Pickup pulled out of the alley, before heading towards Pulaski, they used their turning signal to turn East toward Pulaski.

That part confused me, if it was a robbery, why use a turning signal? If a garabe was broken into, why obey the rules of the road?

Then again, would someone be moving at that time of the morning?

Another thought, junk collectors don't cover their findings.

I hesitated, but called the police just in case. Not sure what they can do but keep an eye out.

Check your garages in West Elsdon area.

  • With the poor police response time to crimes in the neighborhood and the outwardly brazen thugery of the street punks plying their trade in our neighborhood, I was thinking, maybe we could pool our money together and buy George Zimmerman a house up here.

When I was 14 or 15 years old I stole a case of soda out of a garage in my neighborhood. The owner used to leave his garage door open from time to time and he must have been in the soft drink business because he always had dozens and dozens of cases of this off brand soda pop stacked up in his garage, One day, while with the guys, walking through the alley, and being thirsty, I walked into the garage and took a wooden case of 12 quarts of this soda. The owner walked in the garage as I was leaving. He started chasing me. I dropped the case and ran like Rafer Johnson. When I turned out of the alley at 64th & Kostner, I slipped on some gravel and took a hard spill, but got up to run again, but it was too late. The guy got me and pummled me pretty bad. Broken nose, black eyes. the whole nine yards. The moral of this story: I never stole another thing. I hope a Cook County judge reads this.

Hiring

What is the point of applying if you guys are going to hire your buddies and/family members anyways. Construction hiring is so rigged anyways. I'm a more than qualified union carpenter apprentice that has been looking for full time construction work without any positive results. I live a few block away from Durkin and my kids attend that school.

Citywide staff pick

From New Bike Racks - where did they come from?:

"Just curious about the new bike racks you see through Lakeview. They are cool colors and in the shape of a bike. I like them and just wondering if they were purchased by the city or some how locally. Any comments would be helpful?"
